Drab on the top by the canopy, the fin and tail with red, blue and yellow. Top of right wing Olive Drab, top of stab and elevator Olive Drab. Bottom of stab and elevator is Grey with White stripe top and bottom. Bottom of right wing is Grey, top and bottom of left wing Aluminum, fuselage is Aluminum, invasion strips on fuselage and bottom of left flap. So it appears that this was a mish-mash of parts and I can either do the mish-mash scheme or do a standard issue scheme. I like the mish-mash!

That plane was basically a flying junk yard. The crew would rob parts from the extensive boneyard of un-repairable P-47's to keep the other ones in the battle.
I just love the history behind these warbirds.

Tonybuilder,

You're doing an awesome job on your Jug. Just a thought on your motor selection. A friend of mine built the big Top Flite Jug and put a DA85 in it. When I asked him about the big motor, he said he needed the extra weight for babance anyway. Besides, an added incentive to the larger motor is that you can fly the plane with a scale diameter Solo 4 blade prop which is what my friend used and his plane flew AWESOME ! ! !

Keep up the great work...........

David

Tanks David,
The DLE85 is looking better and better. And with a solo prop that will be cool.
This plane has been my favorite ever since I watched the field assembly videos of the P-47, I fell in love.    I was amazed at how they engineered this plane to be shipped in three boxes, then uncreated and assembled with just basic tools and man power. Kind of like the modern day ARF. Here is a link to the videos. Vid 1 http://youtu.be/GkrUMT1d3C4

Fuselage framing “top”

Progress was good on the fuselage, "Angie" is all framed up and ready for the top to be skinned. I got all the formers and stringers glued in.      I used yellow glue as much as I could. I found myself gluing one former in with yellow glue, then the next with med CA without even knowing it, habits are hard to break, but I am getting there.
Using yellow glue is different and takes getting use to, you need to find ways of holding parts together that usually if CA was used you just hold it, glue it and move on. I am liking the yellow and the CA is slowly moving out of my system. I used some scrap ¼ balsa to pin down to the board to hold formers and RUC and LUC in place.

I will be beefing up the engine box and I have been playing with the idea of laminating thin sheets of carbon fiber to the inside of RUC, LUC, TR, TF and TW I am going to order some sheets this week and I kept the patterns so I can cut them out.

The stab saddle is glued in and ready to be skinned, cant wait to fit the stab and rudder so I can finish the elevator linkage
I used 30 min epoxy on this and weighed it down to dry.
On the stringers I cut the ones that needed splicing at a 45 degree and glued them with med CA. I glued in the stock stringer locations first using the supplied ¼ balsa.

I picked up some ¼ balsa at my LHS for the added stringers, I got some really light stuff, wont even register on my scale! I have been thinking about my hatches. One will be up front on the top of the fuselage between F1 and F2 there is a big hatch on the jug I can scale in. this will have my fuel dot, air fill and whatever ells I need there. The second will be on the side by the canopy. This will be for charging and switches. I need to find those location so if anyone has some measurements that would be greatly appreciated. I think I will end up cutting them after I glass and layout the panel lines. But I will glass up some hatch covers before that.

Progress Fuselage top

Started to sheet the fuse top. Yellow glue is a challenge but I'm getting it. Yes adding more ¼ stringers makes access more difficult but I think it will be worth it. I’m finding that the slower pace I am taking is allowing me to really think about what I am doing and to do other tasks that take time and allow the glue to dry, so really CA is not any faster.
The foam sanding sheets from HD really work well smoothing the radius out, wish I had them when I did my Meteor!   Blue tape hard at work protecting my “Angie”
I need more clamps!   I need more clamps!

While waiting for glue to dry I added some triangle blocks at the front of the motor box. I meant to do this before I glued in the stringers but forgot. I did catch it before I sheeted.
I am really excited. I found a way to create the bulge on the bottom of the ruder starting at the top of the stab .

So I spread the back of the fuselage at the end of the stab saddles. I lined the sides up with the outline of the elevator. This is giving me a ¼ on each side and that should do it. I will have to do some work on the ruder but that’s cool. I cut a few blocks to hold things in place. One to spread the back, one on each side of F9, and one on each side at the end.
I have a couple ideas on how to add the bulge to the ruder. I had resigned myself to doing it the way the plans show and went ahead and shaped the ruder. So first Idea is to just add lumber to it and fill and shape as I go. The Idea that makes the most sense is to cut the radius out at the top of the bulge back to the hinge tube. Then once the fuselage is finished make a template of the rear profile out of 1/8 hard balsa. Then glue that into the flat surface on top of the hinge tube. Then fill in around that with balsa block. This would give me a sanding guide to shape the profile. I guess that’s what I will do.
I will need to trim the elevator a little, should be ok.

When I built my G&L hobbies super chipmunk I built it around a DLE30. It was a 22lb 86" wing span. I originally got a DLE55 for it and once I had it it looked way to big for the plane so I sent it back and got the 30. Well it flew very scale, no thrills and it needed momentum to do maneuvers. 6 months later I stuffed the 55 in it and it flew awesome, I also ended up taking a pound of lead of the noes too. So I'm feeling the same about this plane, hope it fits, cuz I ant's going to cut the cowl!

I got a little work in on Angie this weekend , and a little flying in too
I got the stab tips done at this point it will be easier to do it now. I will do putty and final sanding before I glass. I will do the pockets when I do the ruder. I masked off the areas I did not want epoxy to get all over before I set the stab. Being I have a small building table I used a strait edge to level the stab with the building board. There was something wired going on with the measurements and I could not figure it out so I went with what looked good. The point from center of F1 to stab tips at LE was equal, the point from the fuse at the LE to the stab tips at the LE was equal but the back measurements at the fuse end were off just a little off from fuse to tips . Everything was lined up on the plan so not sure what was going on. Next I will glue the ruder in and sheet the rest of the top, I should get that done on Monday.

Vertical stabilizer to fuselage, sheeting top fuselage.

I tend to do things a little different then the manual. Partly because I don’t read it, and partly because I just build the way I feel it should be. Sometimes that’s good and some times its not. I do try and fallow the steeps in the manual but sometimes it is confusing and not so clear. One reason I post so many pics. I am a visual builder and I build by seeing what it looks like. So I did not fallow the stab and fin install as laid out in the manual. I first got the stab all lined up and good, then glued it in. the next day I started to fit the fin. It was actually easier to do it this way for me. I first made a temple of the stab profile and transferred it to the fin, then trimmed it leaving about a ¼ to much material for fine tuning. Next I started fitting the fin. Once I got it all plumed and centered I used the scribe method using a piece of 1/8 balsa. The first fitting is just to get if centered and plumb. I used the ruder hinge pin for measuring my center line.

You don’t have to have the sheeting of the fin perfect at this point. After scribing the stab profile I sand it away using my 2” radius sanding block. This is good for this type of task. You can bring it down right to the line as you move threw the
gentle sweep of the curve. Then I fit again and make any adjustments to the position of the fin, then scribe again with the 1/8 strip. This gives you a perfect fit and its quick and easy.
I really did not understand the way the LE of the fin was suppose to fit into F9 so I just did what looked right. I guess this is what you are suppose to do.

More fin installation.

I added some 1/8 strips to the inside of the fin for additional bonding. Probably over-kill but why not! The fin fits so tight and you could almost glue it in with CA, but I used 30 min epoxy I finished sheeting the turtle deck too. Next I will do the filet’s at the fin and F9 then flip the fuse and work on the bottom. I ordered my Mirce finishing set's. That is the three set detailing set. - Paint Mast for stars and bars. 15000 rivets, 100 meter 1,2 mm wide lines for panel lines and 750 dummy screws in three dimensions. All details for fuselage, wing and tail. So that should be here in a few weeks.

Two glasses of wine over 6 hours, shouldn't affect the installation of the fin should it. Looks strait to me.

Nope, still sports scale. The Top Flite kit is a sports scale kit unlike the Ziroli or other giant scale P-47. Just tinkering with it that's all.

Depends on what your defining all out scale. To me all out scale is documentation, no deviation of the plane being scaled. All my planes have had panel lines and rivets, scale hinge lines and linkages, so for me this is sports scale. Not fallowing exact measurements and scale scheme.
