The resort looks pretty nice! And if we can have food and beverages on the field this time it will be great. I know being the home of Skinner we will not be let down.

Thanks Clint.

I was told the food in South Africa is excellent!! Just tried some and the SA beer is great(tried one with a black elephant on the label) don't remember the other one.

I hope to see wild life for sure!!

Clint, do you know anything about the fuel for us flying YS?

Regards

Alejandro

Hi, rest assured there will be good catering at the venue, so you certainly won't be hungry or thirsty. And wildlife is confined to game reserves, so there won't be any lions on the runway...sorry (you'll have to go to a local reserve to see them).

Alejandro, it is my understanding that top quality fuel will be available (Cool Power and the likes). I expect that any specific requirements can be catered for. I would suggest that as part of your entry you specify your preferences in terms of nitro content etc. I ran my YS170 with no problems, so expect there should be no issue regarding fuel.

Regards
Clint

Thanks Clint, I'll ask fpr the Coolpower on the preliminary entry. What I mean by food is only to be compared with the 2011 WC, where there was only one guy with hot dogs during the P's for both flying sites.........

Best regards

Alejandro P.

As I read it again, it does not sound good, I did not meant SA, as I have not had the opportunity to be there yet, maybe I am still disappointed at the last WC and the comment was about that, sorry if my writing implied otherwise.

Hi, no need to apologise at all. We are expecting numbers in excess of 300 (pilots, assistants, supporters and spectators). One hotdog stand certainly won't be adequate. Fortunately it won't be too hot in South Africa at that time of the year, but there will be more than adequate drinks and food at the venue......we never go hungry at a local competition! And the South African beer is pretty good....after the flying that is.

Clint, what are the restrictions on Lipo batteries on planes? There is the potential for 3 pilots on the same flight to have their batteries not accepted onto the flight

Hi Tim, I nearly misunderstood you but I think you are talking about taking flightpacks onto commercial aircraft.

From memory anything above 105 Watt hours is considered dangerous goods. (ie. a 550mAh 2S RX pack will be 7.4v x 0.55 Amp hours = 4 Watt hours). That is why most mobile phones and laptops are accepted on board. As you rightly pointed out a flightpack is 5000mAh and 37volts so is closer to 185 Watt hours.

There should be no problem in booking the packs onboard as dangerous goods (just not as passenger luggage). There are a heap of rules and regulations regarding storage and spacing of dangerous goods. I am sure that all passenger airlines will object if the packs are declared but there should be far less problems sending the packs separately on a Cargo flight. Have the 3 pilots discussed it with a courier service like DHL, Fedex or the like?

When I did my dangerous goods course most of the airline pilots on the course said that they would far rather have the battery packs in the passenger compartment rather than in the luggage hold. We were shown a series of photographs where a laptop battery had ignited onboard a flight and there was much discussion around how to put it out.

Grant

There are new rules for shipping lithium batteries for 2013. I have attached the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Lithium Battery Guidance document for 2013 and a UPS guidance document for shipping lithium batteries.
