How do I go about getting the wrinkles out of the fabric on my Piper Cub? They are everywhere and look horrible!

Use either a covering iron with a sock on it and medium heat or a heat gun and glove. Pretty standard if the ARF has been sitting around for a while.

What do you mean a heat gun with a glove?

Using a heat gun and glove to help smooth it out. The heat gun help shirk the covering and the glove is on your hand and smooths out the covering while you heat it.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/covering-glove-HAN150

These are the two products that I am talking about. Does this help?

Yes that explains it all! Can I use a heat gun bought from Home Depot? Didn't know if there is a huge difference with the one horizon has.

The only difference is that a Hobby store one has a flat looking tip which sends out heat in a narrow pattern maybe
3"x 1/4" as compared to regular one which usually have a round 2" tip, therefore the hobby shop one is designed more for heating up edges when doing covering on wingtips, etc. But you can use the one in your toolbox with no problem.....just keep it moving, if you stay in one spot too long, you will burn thru it!

I don't know if anyone does this anymore, but, years ago when I was building kits, I would take a sewing needle and poke a few holes in the wrinkles then hit them again with the covering iron. The needle hole offers an escape for the trapped air and the wrinkle should iron right out.

Ummm.....

May I offer a differing opinion?

The heat guns sold in hardware stores and the like put out a WHOLE lot hotter air than the covering guns do so extreme caution must be taken or you won't believe how tight that covering can shrink. I'd spend a few bucks for the modeling unit.

Oh, this is the voice of experience speaking...

Yup, I was going to say the same thing. I also found it out the hard way.

There are some temperature variable guns available at the hardware store that will work however.

You have to find just the right setting for your particular type of covering too.

One type of covering does great with an "8" setting on my gun, but that same setting will completely ruin other coverings.

I don't remember the name of the unit, but I found a nice hardware store gun with heat settings that features a stream of cool air around the area being heated...
That has worked very well for me to keep from burning through covering.

Your best bet is of course to practice on something else, using the same covering before attacking your plane...

Instead of a needle, I find that a #11 exacto blade works better, because the hole is nearly invisible.  You just lightly touch the covering.

Before you try the heat gun you need to seal your edges a lot better. The heat gun will shrink the covering away from edges if they aren't tight.

When using the heat gun, keep an even flow of air and don't try to do the whole thing at once, with some practice you will see how the covering acts. SEAL your edges. ENJOY !!! RED

Again, SEAL the edges before you plug in the heat gun & don't use too high a setting untill you see how the covering reacts. If overheated, the covering won't shrink anymore & can delaminate

Man o'man! Be really careful of hardware store heat guns! They are designed to blister off the paint on a house. They will also blister the skin right off your flesh in a matter of a couple of seconds. I strongly suggest spending the few dollars on a hobby heat gun made for model airplane covering. It will be way less expensive than an ER visit if something bad happens with that Home Depot heat gun.

A spray bottle with a fine spray nozzle filled with water can also be useful at times.
There also is a steam machine used to de-wrinkle clothes that some have used with success.

Sounds like your new at this so I would suggest you start here http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=67  Like others here, I do not recommend a commercial type heat gun, way too hot  If you're going to be in this hobby for a while I would buy a covering iron and a heat gun as well as a temp gauge to check the temp of your iron.If you're on a budjet(who's not) try checking the classifieds here or a local swap meet. Most covering shrinks in the 250- 280 deg range and there is a place to use one or the other tool. Covering over a solid surface should be shrunk with an iron set for around 280* and work it in small areas at a time and make sure it's stuck down or it will wrinkle again in the sun. Poke any big wrinkles with the tip of the #11 knife blade before ironing, or you may just create another smaller wrinkle you wont get out, I even use the trim iron for some of those to get them out. Covering over open rib bays can be shrunk with the gun but like it was said before watch out for overheating. If  the covering starts changing color too much you are overheating it. You may need to drill some small holes in the trailing edges of wings and stabs to let hot air out or the covering will stretch instead of shrink. Sometimes they just don't take enough slack out of the covering on arfs and it will never get tight and wrinkle free no matter how much you heat it. Good luck and happy flying
