I had a 7C.... great radio..... but I upgraded to the 8FG & 8FG Super..... it is an awesome radio plus I can use the same receivers as the 7C.

Without question go with the 8FG Super.... you will be impressed.... and never look back... FASST Rules !!!!

+1. Go with the 8FGS, but if you can afford the new 14SG even better because then you have telemetry if you want to use it and it's also comparable with Futaba's S-FHSS receivers.

Doug.

+1 on the 8FG!!
The fact that you already have some R617FS receivers is a very good reason to go with the 8FG, since they will not work with the T8J. FASST compatible receivers from FrSky have a good reputation and are very attractively priced as an alternative to the Futaba models.

Best of luck,
Pete

About 8 months ago, I was ready to retire my 15 year old Futaba Super 8, it was a great radio but was time to move on. I started looking at all the different makes and models. I had seen way too many Spektrum crashes so that was not on my list. Came across the 8J when it first came out and it got my attention right away. $239 with coupon from Tower with 2 rx's, and very important to me was that I could get the Futaba 6 channel FHSS rx's for $35 shipped, about 1/2 the cost of Fasst rx's. I generally keep about 15 + planes RTF so rx cost is a big factor. The tx had everything I needed and then some, 20 model memory, backlight display, all the normal programing and no external antenna. I have been using and flying the 8J a lot in the last few month, never any kind of problem. I fly mainly glow, but have 5 or 6 nice electric also, see some pics below -

Just 1, The original 8FG was upgraded to the 8FGS which is a 14 channel radio (12 proportional and 2 switched) It is really a nice radio and you can still use your R617FS receivers with this transmitter in 7CH mode.

I are confused.. your 7 channel radio didn't have enough channels but you won't likely use all 8 on the new transmitter?? I'm missing something here.

after hearing all the comments and thinking this over I am going to stretch my budget and go with the super 8fg ..I can continue with 617s rx and just add the 8ch for the few gassers I have .theres just too many good reasons in favor of that system.the 12 ch is well beyond my means and frankly my needs but the 8fgs is the right fit for me.I am and remain a futaba proud owner.

I am likely not the person to advise you..I ended up with the 8 fg in large part for its compatability with all my current 617s rceivers.some of the other guys here that fly those big boys can chime in and give a honest answer.and as I said earlier I am leary to a degree with the technology supporting the 8j.I had the pleasure to experience 2 very expensive brownouts with earlier spectrum dx7. so I went back to futaba and never looked back,

my only personal thought is you probably have a huge investment in your yak and if it were me I would look seriously at least the 8fg or better. but let others with real experince state their thoughts.

It's not the size of the airplane that should determine your purchase, but the features of the system. You can fly any size airplane with the Futaba 8J transmitter and the receivers available for it. Check the features. For many, the 8J will have the features they desire for the type of flying they do. For others, the 8FG Super's programming offers the options they need.

You can compare the features here: http://www.futaba-rc.com/systems/feature-compare.html

Features are not what concernes me. It's the difference between fasst and fhss that make me feel like the fhss is just for parkflyers and small .40 .60 size planes

I bought the 8J about 6 months ago after retiring my 15 year old Futaba Super 8UAFS. I have flown about 15 different planes with the 8J, all types, 100's of flight - absolutely rock solid. And I have stretched the boundries far out and low - very happy with purchase. You can see soem of my planes above, mostly twins, bipes and 90/120 size stuff.

I bought the 8J last summer. I use it on my .40, .60, 50cc, and 100cc planes. Absolutely no problems. Really like the programming. Buy the radio that suits your needs.

Good luck,
Darrolair

darn he said it right.and thats why I am going fasst and getting the add on's that the super8fg has.I think for an average sunday sport flyer the 8J is fine.but again having had spectrum I am not a fan of the other frequency tecnology.just my personal preference .if futaba says its good I trust it.I havent had one single brown out and have flown my fasst hundreds of flights.and having flown over 30 years I love the software and programming options of super 8 over 8J.
