Looks like its not just our models that are at risk of battery fire. Maybe they were using I NiCd charger on a LiPo


glad not one was hurt !

Status: offline 		we laugh, but thats exactly what it was.. it was a lithium battery fire on the 787 dreamliner... dont know the reason, but the 787 is the new "electric" jet.. it has a massive electrical system because alot of the functions that were previously powered by bleed air, such as anti ice... are now electrically driven.. big fuel savings..

so its having some growing pains.. the FAA launched an airworthiness investigation today.. go figure..

Status: offline 		Wow, de-ice is typically a 500F Bleed Manifold. Hard to imagine replacing it with an electric powered heater. You would imagine that bleeding off of that high bypass NextGen engine would not be a big deal in terms of performance.

Status: offline 		As you well know, anything that 'bleeds' air for ANYTHING from your G suit to cockpit pressurization to whatever, reduces thrust. Boeing has chosen an engineering solution to not use bleed air in order to not reduce thrust and increase fuel efficiency. And, imagine that, there are some growing pains. Disclaimer: I'm a retired Navy fighter pilot now working for Boeing, but trust me, the F-22 has had significantly more problems than this and they continue production and flying. And, the F-14 (particularly with the POS P&W TF-30 engine) had staggering problems, but fought through them. Similarly, Boeing will figure this out and the 787 will be a great success. In my humble opinion, of course!

Status: offline 		I'm aware but you'd think that bleeding off a high bypass engine like this would make adding an electrical heating system unviable.
Not sure Boeing got it right here.

Status: offline 		FAA just grounded all 787's until the battery problems are resolved.
United is the only airline in the US flying the 787.

Status: offline 		My comment on the Boeing engineers was regarding their use of electrical power for some functions instead of bleed air. The battery problems appear to be related to Lithium Ion batteries. The discrepant batteries are being investigated now to see if they were manufactured in the same lot, had similar discrepancies, etc. Boeing's contention is that we have over one million flight hours on that type battery with no issues. Lots of hard work, investigation and probably some engineering to do before this is resolved. More to come.
