Its more of an issue to find the small cans instead of gallon containers. WalMart used to have it, Home Depot and Lowes should as well. Paint Dept.

When building a plane like this, and on other build threads of similar planes, I noticed formers, ribs and other ply parts are pretty much installed as they are from the kit. A lot of weight could be saved by removing the centers of ribs, etc, but I don't see it. Is there some reason? Are solid ply ribs needed because of the stresses involved? Has anyone seen a wing fail due to pared down (hollowed) ribs on a larger plane like this. A couple of hollowed ribs or formers could make up for a whole lot of hollowed balsa blocks. Just asking.

I agree with you John ,some weight could be saved if one wanted to go that route.Especially in the aft end were its needed ,one could reduce the amount of nose weight that everybody says they needed to add to get the right centre of gravity. These DC3 plans by Ziroli are pretty dated with not much consideration to weight savings .Still they are great plans.

Just a few more pics, nice weather has arrived finally and I have a Bronco ARF to put together so I'll be slowing down a bit on this project, but not for long because I would like to test fly it this year.By that time I should have some twin time under my belt. The right side and underside are basically covered.

Great looking DC-3. I am in the process of applying Flite Metal to my Ziroli B-25J. Man, that's a lot of aluminum! Good luck with your project.

Am now back at work on the FM covering process, its been a busy summer at work and I now have time to get at it.I am also pleased that Saito came out with this 220 single engine and am seriously considering getting a pair of these powerful engines to replace the US 41cc gassers. My only concern is fuel delivery from the 50 oz centre tank.Maybe those Cline regulators will do the trick here.Doesn't this engine have an optional pump?I thought I read that somewhere....

Just a few pics to show I'm still at this project.I have the tail section pretty well covered with FM and am now proceeding with the left side/and top .I have decided to go with Saito 180's on this one. They run smoother and will turn the 16x8 3 bladers at 8200 rpm when you need it.They are also reliable, give off no radio noise, and they sound great, what more could you ask for?I already have one fairly low time 180 so I just have to pick up one more.I see there's a few of em on the RCU marketplace.I also have Cline regulators for the Saito's..

Working up the left side I just finished the doors. The hinges aren't permanent yet because I'm still looking for close up hinge details some where.I've looked at Airliners.net and DC-3.com but haven't found anything real close yet.I'll find something close enough to scale somewhere I'm sure. Now that I have a bit of twin time (15 flights on my OV10) I'm really inspired to get this one ready.

Hi Steve,

Nice work. I am building a dc-3 as well. www.propellor.tv

When you give me your email address I'll mail you close ups of the hinges. I have more than 300 close up pics of a restored Dutch dc-3.

Bart.

Thanks Bart.My email is steverdaly@shaw.ca
Yours is also coming along nicely,I seen the door picture on your finishing section of your website and I noticed the back door hinges are a lot smaller than on others. Are those hinges completely different ones or are the others just eqiupped with fairings or are they different types?

It was the first thing I build and frankly made it as a test. I will be changing those hinges to resemble the original ones better.

I did see different fairings on the back doors. Long ones and short ones. I am not sure which type used what. I am replicating the SAS dc-3 (used to be a c-47) anyway, so I just copy what I see.

The pics will come shortly,

Bart.

Getting close to finishing the fuse.I still have to add some door handles etc. Here's some more pics of me finishing up the nose..I'm thinking I may open up the nose like the original which will enable me to add weight .I built a tray in front of the cockpit to accomodate this.I also still have to add the observation dome on top of the fuse.
