I've started assembling my DC3 and will show some photos as I progress.Also I would appressiate any input.Anyone else building one of these?...Steve

It takes up all my building table space at 99".This is from a Precision Cut kit which fits together nicely.At this stage I have'nt glued any parts yet.

Robart retracts/tailwheel and cowls.I'll be stuffing a pair of US41's in them.

I realize it will raise the engine cost somewhat, but don't you really think such a nice scale project deserves a more scale engine than the US 41?

I'm waiting for a pair to go in my F7F. Couldn't resist them.

Acually I initally wanted to install radials Bill but the bigger Technopowers dont fit and the smaller ones dont have the power,Also the Saito 170's are just a bit too big for the scale cowls.I could make a bigger cowls and would involve enlarging the nacelles a bit.Could be done.The 170's would be nice.I could also opt for a V twin.....

Have you considered the OS R5-300? It's about the same six inch diameter of the A7 and B5 Technopower, and a lot more powerful.

Or for less money and even more power the ASP five cylinder radial is a full 4.0 cid, one third larger displacement than the OS. If you have room that one would do very well.

I just wanted more than five cylinders showing, so that meant the Technopower A7. Granted, it's only 1.35 cid, but my f7f issmall enough to fly with 0.40 two strokes, so my only problem will be trying to make up for the weight.

Hi,

At the moment I am building the Ziroli DC-3 albeit I have a fiberglass fuselage that mates very well with the rest of the Ziroli plan. I wish to know:
1. what the "normal" anticipated weight of the plane is.
2. information of how the plane flies (i.e. any vices).

Like Steve, I will be doing the DC-3 in the Canadian Air Force scheme although not with the double lightning flash as shown in Steve's photos. In this regard I would appreciate any further information as to the light grey FS number found on the lower part of the fuselage and on the wing underside.

Any ancillary information or tips one might have on the Ziroli DC-3 would be most welcomed.

Hello Reuben;45-50 lbs is the projected weight.What engines are you using in your 3?I dont know of any vices the DC-3 has.Its supposed to be the best big twin to start out with,although I plan on getting some twin time on a Twin-Air 40 first.
Do you have any pics of the glass fuse?...Steve

Hi Steve,

I had in mind in using either the MOKI 30cc gas engine with rear induction, rear exhaust (or sideways) or the MVVS 30cc gas too or the Tonini 25cc (german gas engine).
I wish to keep on the lighter side of this if possible. I also have in mind in using the MICK REEVES fiberglass covering instead of the traditional balsa/fiberglass system but still have to find out how much I need.
Its no problem in putting up a few shots of the fiberglass fuse...getting out doing it is the problem! heheheh[:D]

Steve...have you got any documentation regarding the FS number of the light grey that was used on the underside by any chance? I got my color scheme from a book about the DC-3 I have of the real DC-3 Canadian Airforce. Another scheme I like is the OTIS SPUNKMEIER scheme but unfortunately I dont know which type of fonts they use in their wording.

Steve....Keep in mind that your plane is gonna require some nose weight.......might as well install the weight as "horsepower".....have seen several with G-38's(Rear exhaust makes a nicer fit) and they fly quite nicely.......If you are inclined and a "Radial" can do the job for you.....even better.......as always with a twin........reliability is the key.....if the engines aren't performing well....don't fly it til they do.........specifically even more so with a taildragger.......nearly impossible to keep a good track on the T/O roll with engines that don't turn an identical RPM( within 200 RPM)......not the easiest to fly on one engine but will do it with adequate power.........Good Luck....Keep us posted ......Bill......

I'm working on the tail surfaces at the moment so the fuse is on the floor.

Lower Surfaces RCAF/CF Dakota's
A good paint match for this is about a 50/50 mix of RAF 'Sky' & FS35237. A weathered 501-109 can readily be replicated by reducing the percentage of 'Sky', giving a more bluish appearance as when weathered, any green tint was 'the first thing to go'.

Here is a picture of my good buddies recently finished and flown DC3. Power is a pair of BME 44s - weight is 44 pounds, including 4 pounds of nose weight. The BMEs are wonderful - I will use a pair of 50s when I build my big B25. This picture is before he finished the graphics - the plane is modeled after the Classic Express N103NA. If you do a search, you can find several pictures of the full scale - and it looks exactly like Larry's finished plane.

I have a semi completed DC-3 hanging in the garage that I would love to finish, but not sure if that will happen... Course, if someone needs it more than me, I could be persuaded!!!!
