I have been kicking this one around for years. Actually had the plans and cowl about 10 years ago, but sold them before I ever did anything with them. Then for the last couple of years, I have been thinking more about it. I almost ordered the plans a couple of times, and was thinking about doing a smaller one.
Well, last month RCU member Chad Veich contacted me and told me his brother had a set of plans and cowl, with built tail feathers, and was I still planning to build one. Well of course I couldn't turn that down, so here I am.
This is a Vince Miller design, with an 89" wingspan. Should weigh between 14-17lbs. Even at the high end, it will be lightly loaded, for a model this size. I am thinking about using a 110 size motor on 5 or 6s. Will swing a scale 18" prop easy.
Here's a few pics of what I have so far. The fuse area around the cabin has a bunch of odd angles, and it took a lot of plans studying to figure it all out. I think I have it right, but will need to get a little farther along to be sure.

Seems my pics are too large, so I have to split them up.

The first airplane ride I ever took was in a 1956 Tripacer, it was 2 years old, I was 12. I will hang out and follow this along.

Fuse is pretty much framed up now. Still needs a few diagonals and some gussets.

Some misc pics, including a couple of color schemes I am considering. I am think of using a 1959 150 scheme, either red or green. The last pic is just cool.

Hey Terry, can you take a picture looking straight down on that funny "kink" right behind the wing trailing edge. And maybe a couple other close ups of it. I've had the plans for years but just never got my head around how that part was done.
Thanks, Dave

Dave,
Here's a few pics of that area. I think I have done it right. One problem I did have was on frame # 4, the cross section shows it be the same width top and botton, but since that frame leans back at the top, it should be wider on the bottom. It forced a similar kink in bottom, but the bottom should fair smoothly back. I built the top cabin frame seperately, on top of the plans, and then added it in. That helped get all thos angles correct.

Chad,
It was cold and windy outside all weekend. There's no better way to spend indoor time than building? Well, OK, there is one way.

You're moving along at a brisk pace. There are sure a lot of odd angles to building a Tripacer. I never realized it had such a collection of kinks.

Have not done much this week, just a few little tweeks here and there. May get some more work done this weekend, however, we got our field back and the weather is supposed to be nice. That will cut into my building. With nice weather, I hope to finally finish painting my 1/4 scale Space W alker as well. At least all the base color.

Well, I'm back working on the Tri Pacer. I took a break to finish up my 1/4 scale Space Walker II. It's now ready to fly on the first weekend that the weather cooperates. Here's a couple of pics.
Today I started making wing ribs. This is a set od main rips for 1 wing half. I will need another set just like these for the opposite wing. There are also a couple ribs near the tips that are of a different pattern. I will likely just cut them seperately.

Terry,

I have the Vince Miller 1/5th scale plans for this Tri Pacer. Your 1/4 scale looks to be built the same way as the 1/5 scale. Are the wing ribs you cut as drawn on the plans or did you modify them any? On the 1/5 scale plans the spars are actually located in the rib and square holes are cut for the spars. Hope that makes sense!

Dan

Dan, the ribs are cut as designed on the plan. It has 2 top spars and 1 lower spar. This has removeable outer wing panels, so I will be adding a wing tube as well, for the wings to mount on. I just dont trust struts to support it completely. Still cutting wing parts, but hope to start wing assembly today or tomorrow.

Terry, good to see you back on the Tri Pacer, I'm still lurking about. I know what you mean about flying weather, we've had a lot of pretty nice weather all along the Gulf coast and though some days are windy others are fine.

OK, it's windy this morning, contrary to weather forcasts, so here's a few shots of what I did this week. Wings are just setting on the fuse. Plan to work on wing tip bow laminates, and finish main wing framing this weekend.
