Hey guys, Am in the market for a new jet. I am looking at the SM F-18C. This will be my first F-18 and heard they have a bit of a temperment on some aspects of flight. But most of the reviews I read were very positive about the SM F-18C.

I wont be getting the jet till probably end of Feb but wanted to start gathering some electronics now. Just a few questions.

Will these servos be fine with this jet?

http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/digital-hi-voltage-hi-torque-metal-gear-mini-hs-7245mh-HRC37245S#t2

And anyone have any experience with the kingtech 140 with the F-18?

thanks

Attached pic is the F-18 I plan on getting.

Those servos might be okay for the ailerons if they fit. You will need 250oz + on the elevator and flap. I used JR 8611a back when they were new.

The Kingtech K-140 will fly it well.

Thanks dubd,

I plan on using hitec 7954`s on flaps and elevators. Rudder will be the thin hitec, I think its the Hitec 125. You said the 7245 will be ok. What would you suggest?

Thanks

Im glad the kingtech 140 will work.

+1 The servo you showed will be fine for aileron and rudders if they fit.
For the elevator I would use the Hitec 7955TG   if you are going with Hitec.
For the flaps Hitec 5645MG
This is what I used on my F-15 powerd by a Jetcat P140 Rx of similar size plane.
I would say that the Ailerons and rudders would not support a standard size servo.  I would suggest you fit the biggest you can fit in there and run the Hitec on the 6 volt setup to get more torque out of them.

Ivan

Just flying, cool thing about the servos I suggested except for the hitec 125`s is that they are all high voltage. A very close servo to the 7955tg is the 7954. Its steel gear but its faster and has more torque and is high voltage.

I already have 5645`s for the flaps. I just need two of the 7245`s for the ailerons and rudders. I will also get 7954`s for the elevators. Thanks guys.

Nice flying Jet I have a Ram 750 then a K-170 now a K-180 the jet loves all and absords the energy just fine. My elevator servo JR 8711, Flaps 8411, I can't remember what servo use for ailerons and rudder. Would this be your first turbine Jet?

P.s Video below shows the Jet flying with all three different power plant

Basimpson, yes it will be my first official turbine jet. I have been flying for 20 years and have had quite a few edfs. Including Byron's f-16 conversion to edf. I can't wait to get mine flying. Had a couple pm's from another member and I have decided to put hitec 7955tg on elevators and nose wheel. Wings still wings will be hitec mini digital and rudders same. Flaps we will see.

18C's are great scale jets. I've flown everyone one except the two put out by yellow.

They are "real" scale jets. I.e you will be using power all the time, they are heavily wing loaded, and are draggy. And they have 10, that's right, 10 gear doors.

And they are honest jets. They don't balloon on flare and are good trainers for any jet after that.

Make sure you use LOTS of flap on take off or you will "hop" off the tarmac. This will make you puffer faster than a child in neverland.

The difference between take off and landing flaps is like 10 degrees.

You'll love it.

Ravill, thanks for the advice. You guys are killing me though. You keep talking about how good it flies and it makes me want it right now. But patience makes it that much better when I get it.

I like the 7994SH servos over the 7995TG. I have them in my FEJ f-16 and they work well and can use 7.4V if you wanted to.

For the rest why not use futaba S3051 servos? On 7.2V you get like 150 torque. And they are only $40!!

Not sure about for the rudder if standard servos will fit. If not what you suggested are ok for the rudder.

Essyou, I'm glad to hear good feedback on the 7954's. That's what you meant right

Ravill, do the SM f-18's come with gear doors and stuff like that done? Does it come with valves for each of the gear doors?

You can order the doors and gears to be installed for a fee. It comes with cylinders for the gear doors, but not the valves as far as I know.

You will need low profile servos for the rudder. Hitec and JR make them. Here are the Hitec versions: http://www.soaringusa.com/product.php?productid=17634

If this is your first yet I highly recommend you get some help with the maiden. I have yet to see a new turbine pilot be successful with an F-18 as their first jet.

I have multiple people helping me with the build and the flights until I am ready by myself.

At this website it shows the f-18 I want and what comes in the kit. http://www.skymasterjet.com/f18.htm

It says this
quote:

(included: scale L/G. Air kit. Fuel Tanks. Tailpipe. Cylinders. Hardware. cockpit details.)

Can someone post some pics of what comes in these kits?

Dubd, you say it comes with cylinders, but not the valves. How many valves do I need for the F-18?

Thanks

Steve

According to the picture below, you may get valves, but I don't use them... the included valved I've used always leak. I would use a UP3 valve or Airpower EV5 electronic valve.

Robart makes different types of valves, so it depends. You need a valve that can operate your gear and gear doors. If going mechanical, I'd use nothing less than a UP3.

Hi

My first jet was an F18F and at the time (2008), every bodey said I was crazy. The plane is still flying

I am using Futaba servos and just in a short note, I wouldn't use Hitec 5645, because they don't center well. Bad pots.....

I am using S9156 in flaps and elevators, 3151 in rudders and 9651 in ailerons.

Remember to ALWAYS take off with half flaps.

Good luck

Nuno

Nuno,

Thanks for the input. Whats funny is that I have a few 5645 servos laying around and thought about my prior experience with them and remembered them not centering well. Those servos are not going to be in my jet. I have had great experience with the futaba 9156 servos. Might put them on flaps and elevators.

Cool runnings!!! Rasta Brah!!!

Did a certain frenchman kill that airplane?

I'd go full EV-5 valve from dreamworks. Don't forget a moisture catch for your air refill.

And even though jetnuno went with a supa-hornee as his first jet, follow what we are telling you if you want to really keep your F-18 charlie. Get some help.

And a supa-hornee as a first jet is a really, really, really bad idea. I've had those too.
