Habu 2 from Park Zone! Horizon has done it again by making a great product even better. My wife and I are getting into jets and this EDF with flaps and retracts will be a great way to develop good habit patterns with a relatively low "entry fee."

http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/habu-2-edf-bnf-basic-PKZ7150

The Habu 2 flies a little heavier due to the fact that it has the same fan as the original, with the increased weight of the retracts and flap servos. This mild mannered EDF uses 4S 3200mah batteries and is capable of knife edge and a wide range of jet-style aerobatics. Going straight up is limited with the stock set up, but doing loops is not a problem.

Now for some pics!

Check out the assembly video on YouTube by John Redman with some tips on getting the retractable landing gear just right for reliable operation.

She's still waiting on the flap servos to arrive...

Flap speed set to 3 seconds from up to fully down. Elevator trim will be set as required with flight testing with flaps.

EDF spool up speed set to 3 seconds to simulate a turbine. This will facilitate some good habits for take-off, aerobatics and go-arounds using this much less expensive foamy to learn "Managing Turbine Lag" as required by the AMA turbine waiver. Being able to explain how to handle turbine lag is part of the ground evalutation to become an AMA certified RC turbine pilot.

More assembly pics for those who want to see them. We've had so much fun with the original Habu that we still have it for more spirited aerobatics and better vertical uplines. This one is fun because of the flaps and retracts are just a blast to play with on touch-and-goes!

Albert,
Great hints on the Habu II.  I've been flying the orginal Habu for 3 seasons now with the below mentioned mods to improve performance.  The first mod is to smooth and fair the inlets by sealing the gaps resulting from the design process.  I used regular Titebond & microballoons as a filler material which is smoothened by a wetted finger.  The crotch of the inlets is extended to the fan face by trailing edge stock, this reduces the turbulence in this area.  The wing-to-fuselage gap is sealed with 1/16"x 1/4" foam tape.  All of the molding pimples are removed with a sanding pad (fine grit) and the entire inlet surface is hardened with thin CA.  The next mod is to smooth the outlet duct with the same fine sanding pad and line it with mylar packing tape, applied lengthwise. Finally ,
I sealed all of the control surfaces with gap sealing tape, used by the sailplane guys.  The sum of these mods result in a noticeable speed improvement with greater takeoff and vertical performance-all on the stock 4S battery.  An upgrade to 5S yields even greater performance but the ESC must be replaced by a 75 A or greater version.
Krylon Fusion rattle can paint is compatible with the Habu foam as is Testors Model Master enamel.
I have a new Habu (original) in the box which I plan to install retracts.  The wing will be enlarged by the addition of 3/4" wide trailing edge stock and extended balsa wingtips.  This area increase should reduce the wing loading which will be increased by the added weight of the retracts.
All in all, the Habu series is a great trainer for everyday flying and a good step to turbine jets.

For all the RC jet pilots out there who don't think this is a good jet trainer...these are the stepping stones that the Habu 2 can bring a person who refuses to go the "heavily wing loaded warbird" route:

1. Flaps and retracts. This Habu foamie will help with muscle memory and getting used to having a complex aircraft, with flaps and retracts to put up and down. Good habits here will yield fewer nerves later due to changing configurations on approach or during a go-around.

2. No prop wash. This is an EDF, yes...but when the aircraft is slowed for landing it has the noticeable difference in control from a prop plane that is blowing air over the control surfaces. The lack of prop-wash is good training for a person just getting into jet flying.

3. Programming. Setting up a transmitter and learning switch positions for flaps and retracts is a good way to get familiar with the radio a person will be using for turbine flying.

4. Throttle lag. Don't take my word for it, go ahead and program your throttle on your EDF to spool up in three (3) seconds from idle to full power (current spool up time for Jet Central Mammoth, 40+ pounds of thrust). Now go out and practice ground handling, take offs, approach and landings with go arounds. I think it is surprisingly similar to the throttle lag of a mid-to-large sized turbine.

5. Wing loading. With the flap servos, landing gear and nose wheel steering servo and a 4S battery I'm told the wing loading is similar to many sport jets and heavier than some. I'll let someone with a Bandit or Flash do the math. Don't let the foamy part fool you...it is much heavier than the original Habu with all the extra gear installed.

I flew the heck out of this little foamie EDF up at Eli Field in Illinois...what a hoot! Touch and goes are a blast. Try hitting an exact touchdown zone every time to practice managing turbine lag. Then try putting the gear down in the flare, right before touchdown...too much fun.

Albert,
Very  good points regarding the Habu II as an excellent trainer for turbine jet flying.  Renown jet pilot, Ali Machinchy even recommends the Habu to develop their skills on being a competent jet pilot.  Ref: RCJI  "Jet Pilot, Beyond the Circuit " DVD video.
There are several fellow club members flying the Habu , Habu II, Habu 32 and the Meteor knockoff at our club field.  They are all good EDF pilots and aspire to obtain their AMA Turbine Waiver in the near future.

Given the added weight of the retract nose wheel in the Habu 2, the GC is no where near where the book says. Did you folks add weight to the tail to get the CG back to 4" from the leading edge of the wing?

Mine balanced perfectly at the indicated 4 inches from leading edge with 2 ounces lead strip laid lengthwise in rear duct, butted up against internal tail cone. Flown several times as above, and intend to flush fit same into foam. I bought mine for the very reasons mentioned by Flyin Tiger, as a warm up for my turbine jet. Art Arro hints are excellent also.

Two ounces is just about what I added back there also. It is just slightly nose heavy. Still waiting for the snow to clear off the runway here so that I can Maiden it.  Couple more days.

Hey guys...don't mean to hijack the thread but I've got a Habu question! Friend of mine gave me a new 1st gen Habu airframe kit. I ordered the hobby king 70mm 10 blade fan/motor combo but I ordered the 6s version instead of the 4s! Doh! A 6S 4000 mah pack fits perfectly in the fuse...would need to modify canopy. I have an esc that will work...my questions are...#1. Will the habu fly well with the extra weight in a 6s 4000 pack? #2 How difficult will the CG be? I'm sure someone has done this, but after an hour digging thru the infinite habu threads, I'm throwing myself on the mercy of the court...thanks everyone!
p.s. 4000 mah is my smallest 6S pack.

Timbersnake,
I don't believe that a 6S4000 can may made to fit in the original Habu or Habu II.  Guys were really working to squeeze in a 5S 3000 LiPo.
You may have some serious CG problems and the wing loading will be way up with this setup.  See if you can swap for a 4s fan unit.
That's my take on this but others may differ.
