I am making up a rudder pushrod for my 20cc gas profile and need to connect a .070" O.D. CF rod to a piece of 4-40 threaded rod by inserting each end in a 1.5" long piece of hollow CF rod. My question is which would be a more suitable method of glueing them in the CF rod, using 15 min. epoxy or medium CA with a kicker to harden the joints.

Karol

If the wire is reasonably tight fit in the carbon tube, I have used cyano - thin - as it also wicks into the carbon and prevents the end of it splitting. If wire slightly slack, I bend it slightly to cause it to friction fit into tube.

Hi karolh
In a similar application I found that sometimes the carbon rod would split under the steel rod. The rods I had have carbon fibers that only ran parrallel to the center of the rod; there was no fiber in the direction of the circumference of the carbon rod. Now I rough up the steel rod with sandpaper, put epoxy on the rod, insert the steel rod, then I take some ordinary sewing thread and wrap it around the carbon rod end 5-6 times to prevent the rod end fron splitting. I cover the the thread with epoxy.
