Hello
I am wondering if most or some helicopter pilots or even fixed wing pilots ever consider cutting corners in the r/c hobby? I'm an inexperienced helicopter pilot who owns a Kalt Baron 30 helicopter and I'm aware parts aren't being made anymore, so my local hobby shop suggested a Century Hawk even though I was thinking of a Hirobo shuttle. I find some things in the r/c hobby expensive and I think about "not" going to the hobby shop for everything. Perhaps I need a new tailboom, so I thought about going to home depot for a piece of pipe or tubing of the same diameter, length and approximate weight for half the cost as what the hobby shop charges. I suppose I'm not the first person to think about this and it has probably ended up costing more in an accident than just spending less on parts at other places than our local hobby shops. I considered buying a new heli but I decided to wait and make a decision later on.

Thanks

I've tried cutting corners with various degrees of sucess. I doubt you will find a tail boom at Home Depot, it's pretty thin aluminum.

I've had some luck fixing/straightening crashed parts but I'll admit it never runs as smooth as new. And of course if you screw up a repair, you risk causing another crash.

The best way to save money is to purchase used stuff. Right now you can get used Xcells for a song. These were great machines a couple years ago and they still fly great, just not as popular.

You can save a bundle on that kind of stuff getting it yourself but you won't find the right materials at a home depot most of the time. Search around your local area and find industrial supply stores that offer material stock. Just a little bit of research and you can find most of the material you'll need, just add a hacksaw and a dremel tool and some other common building tools and you can make just about any kind of structural element you want.

rebuilding and making your own parts is a good thing, but just remember, make it right, this is a flying machine, the life you save may be your own.

i once knew a guy, long time member of our club, no mind you this was 15 years ago, he use to glue his props back together when they snapped in half when he hit the ground.

Don't cut corners, you will loose more money in the long run.

My Dad can get material to build all this stuff for me and rebend crash parts, but he doesn't. This is because It is cheaper and easier to just buy the stuff. Raptor tail booms cost 5 dollars. Material isn't much cheaper and you still have to cut your own groves and that takes some time.

Planes I can understand making or repairing, but not a helicopter. There is too much precision invovled. Even if your spindle is slightly bent it will effect your flying greatly.
