My friend is working on a scratch built Russian 1/5 scale I-16 WWII fighter. He is building it on plans that TDM model made for us in 1/5 scale. Here are a few pics of the plane.

Jeff,

Hope to get the servo's in and painted this weekend. I'll post more pics after that. I will be putting an EME-35cc gas engine in it with a 20x8 prop. Should provide plenty of power

Some motivation:

Here is a link to my 115 inch 1/3 scale maiden. Currently under repair after power loss and high speed bean landing on second flight. The maiden went well. A bit tail heavy with sensitive elevator on high rates. The gear failed on landing roll-out, but no damage sustained on that landing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SNzlHkuv9w

I like the I-16 progress, because, this plane you don´t see every day as P-47, Spitfire, etc.
So, your friend enlarged the original plan?

No my friend is doing the building and we called TDM models in Arkansas and ask them is they could enlarge the plans. He said he could so we ordered the plans in 1/5 scale to make the plan around a 72" wing span. Since then we have ordered a set of plans from a French site that had them in 3.8 scale. A little larger than 1/4 scale. When we get around to building that I-16 is will have a 93" wing span.

Greta looking I-16 Jeff. I have watch you flight video many times and it is one reason we are building this I-16.

There is also possibility to have Finish camouflage. Finnish Air Force had 3 of I- 16: s during WW II

Here is my friend´s I-16 Rata. It was in 1/5 scale, and he had it for the season 2007. It was good plane, but a little bit heavy. I don´t rember the weight, but I know, that he had problems with every landing.

That is a very nice looking Polikarpov I-16. It is the same scale as the one we are building. Do you remember the size of the engine he used. Ours is going to be heavy also for a 1/5 scale plane and we are using an eme 35cc gas engine with a 20x8 prop. I think that will have enough power to do the job

I also think, taht 35ccm, will be good. My friend used glow engine and I think, that he had 25ccm.But I´m not sure it´s a long time ago.
What weight do you expect?About 8kg?

It looks like the I-16 will be around 14lbs(6.5 kg). The EME 35cc gas engine will produce 19 lbs(8.5 kg) of thrust. The will be more than enough power to fly the I-16 but I am a little worried about the landing also. The wing loading I fell is going to be very high so landings will be a little hot.

Old Erkki,

Very nice too hear from you in Finland. I hope you are doing well. I really like the Finnish Air Force colors on the I-16 but I have already started painting mine. Here is the comouflage pattern I have chosen. It is from a Russian squadron the was on the front line in July 1940.

I think that 6,5kg is good weight. If you use EME 35 with 8,5kg of thrust, you will be able to hang on the prop! . Don´t worry about your I-16. It will be good plane, and the landings will be nice!I´m looking forward to some more pictures and maiden flight video.

I'll be posting more pics after I get tge I-16 painted and the EME 35cc engine installed. I have a video camera I will bring to the field and take some video of the maiden flight. The weather here in Tennessee is cold and damp right now so it will be some time before the maiden can be done.

Here are a few more pic's of how the build is coming along. It is ready for the EME 35cc engine and I will install it once I test run a few tanks of fuel thru it.

My friend Paul molded the cowl out of fiberglass for me. He is very good at it and makes cowls for others in our club.

Old Erkki,

Thanks for the video. It was very nice and I really like to watch the I-16 in flight. We are installing the electronics now and I hope to have the I-16 completed with in the week.
