I put some Ultra Cote 1/4" striping tape on the wings of a model I'm building. I've never used it before, the instructions say to go over the tape with a covering iron set at 250 degrees. The tape seems pretty sticky going on, is hitting it with the covering iron necessary or will it stay on?

It's not necessary, but I do it anyways. I have done a few planes with both the stripping tape sold at hobby shops and the ones sold at autoparts stores, they have held up pretty well.

The ultra coat striping tape I have found sticks better than the automotive stuff.  I iron it with a medium temp iron to help it stick better.

^ Just the opposite for me but I don't think the difference was the brand as much as how fresh it was. The tape I find in most hobby shops seems to be older and been hanging on the rack forever. The tape I get at the auto store is much newer and gets replaced often as it sells. I use one of the GP stripe cutters now and just cut the stripes from covering and iron it on. It doesn't come off in the hot sun or with clean up.

I have used UltraCote striping tape for years. It works great and I would follow the instructions to complete the seal by running your iron over it at the appropriate temp. It also doesn't hurt,
if you are flying glow power, to brush/dab on a thin coat of clear polyurethane high gloss as it will further protect the tape from lifting as a result of repeated exposure to fuel residue.
