Status: offline 		Rather a busy day running and flying diesels at the club field last Saturday.

It was mid 20's and ended in a shower which was rather a relief because the day before it was

48 degrees in my shed. Not unusual for you Northern Hemisphere types you say?

It was 48 degrees Celsius not Fahrenheit.

That's about 118.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Anyway here's some diesel pics which may be of interest.

Ray

First my old faithful Super Tigre G20/15 Diesel being run for the first time in years before going back into it's model.

Now has a new crankshaft after the old one broke just after coming second in a club 500 lap race..





Next a mk2 Fora 15 D Pioneer.

This one was rather troublesome in that it had developed a high speed miss even thought it would turn an ABC 7 x 6 at 18K,

exactly on the money for a Fora 15D.

More later about the fix.

At Mannering Park, the r/c-ers fly in the mornings and the c/l-ers fly in the afternoons.

This also leaves the r/c prep tables available for running c/l motors.

Below just some of the diesel lovers.




My Fora 15D with shaft extension, spinner nut and Rothwell R250 venturi/NVA.

It turned that thin hubed APC 7 x 5 at nearly 19K. Normally this APC prop is too fragile to fly with.



A third Fora 15D running in on a Taipan 7 x 4.

Firstly, a Keil Kraft Phantom Team Racer mk1, powered by a genuine Oliver Tiger Schneurle port 09 (1.5cc) Cub Diesel.

Ian built this one to compete with at the local SAMS championships.



Next a Taifun 1.5cc diesel powered "Dervish", a vintage stunter originally published in the Aeromodeller I believe.



Ian's new Drone which seems to run quite nicely and which is destined to power another interesting vintage c/l model rather sooner than later.

Left my ST G20/15D powered club racer, and right Fora 15D powered Little Quickie diesel Goodyear model.





Bob Fisher's MVVS hybrid powered Ohm Special Diesel Goodyear model.

The MVVS is built around an older glow engine with a Rossi p/l and a Parra 15D diesel push/pull head.

It's running in nicely and is very fast with good hot/cold starts.




Bob's CS 09 Oliver Cub clone.

Motor has been brought up to Oliver MOD specs and runs hard. Model is a "Tamer Lane" for 1/2A combat built from the Aeromodeller plan (see Hippocket site).





Below closeup of the CS 1.5cc Cub. These still need a bit of tender loving care to make them go, but usually respond very well. Better quality usually than the 2.5cc version.

Status: offline 		Finally, the Fora 15D problem mentioned in the initial post.

The engine belongs to Wally L and has been the source of much conjecture in recent weeks.

Firstly Bob thought that the venturi was the source of the high speed misfire so he made anew one and it seemed to go away for a while but came back.

So we swapped venturi's and NVA's etc. from another engine, no change. Even tried changing engine stands in case the problem was resonance.

Then we tried another fresher batch of fuel and it seemed to run better. Next time out it was back.

Bob stripped the engine.

Below pic shows push/pull assembly.



The head was fitted straight, the shims were intact, no obvious leaks.

Bob took the integral cylinder/liner off. and ran a straight edge over the top of the crankcase. Sure enough the region around one of the bolt holes was raised.

The pointer below indicates the high region.




The cause?

Possibly overtightening the cap screws. Very easy to do and I may even have been guilty of doing it to my engine.

A few minutes with a sheet of letter paper produced a gasket and this time the misfire was gone!

Hopefully for good.

The .09 has always been my favorite for small models.

I started out with a Wasp .049 in 1951 and soon discovered an .09 Cub or .098 would keep my lines much tighter than any of the popular half-A engines when used in the same model.

Dan,

there's quite a few excellent 1.5cc engines in production right now, both diesel and glow.

Off the top of my head I can think of

# JAK 09 combat diesel
#Parra 09 Wasp (glow and diesel)
#Fora 09 (diesel and glow)
#AP Hornet (or was that a Wasp) glow (also works well as a diesel)
#CS Oliver Tiger Cub

Yes, I'd completely forgotten about PAW.

I'd count them as two, the Blue head PB 09 with the incredibly heavy main bearing, and the 28 gram lighter 09 TBR.

Status: offline 		If we're including glows, I'd hate to see the Enya 09 left off any list of excellent 1.5s currently in production. I recently got myself an 09 Quicky (the TBR version) and it's a lovely little thing. Even the plain bearing 09-IV is competitive with a 10FSR on a 7x4, and seems to handle nicer.

Status: offline 		It's great that they still make smaller engines. I don't really need any more .09-.10 engines, just some time away from the horses to actually build and fly another model.

I have some RC 1.5cc diesels that need a home. I'm thinking something like a Lazy Bee that's slow and easy to fly in confined spaces.

RC 1.5cc diesels on hand:

AE, AM, PAW, MVVS, PAW & Webra.

The AM, PAW & Webra have mufflers so I'll probably go with one of them.

I also have a PAW "Texaco" .09 with blue head that would be ideal if it had a muffler and carb.

Status: offline 		The little ones have been a blessing to me. Due to family health issues cannot travel too far from home hour+ drive to field use a local soccer field and few parks. I do have 2 MP JET 061 diesels on the way. With the deluge of electric ARFs plenty of planes out there to convert and many have been posted on the site over the last few years.
Sadly my irvine 40s 53s ones have not been flown in the last few years along with my 4 strk ASP/Mag 4 strk 52 glowsThere is an electifly SE-5 with a AP hornet 09 09 conversion
about done ready to join the tiger moth which will wear the PAW 06 martin

A real shame that TT have terinated the GP 10. It was a copy of the OS 10FP and it was a better engine.
I had a borrowed one in a 80% Simplex Old Timer and it was a delight of an engine.
Machined internally as good as I've seen.

Status: offline 		Fredo totally agree I am lucky enough to have 3 TT10-s with Davis heads that front angled needle carb much better setup than the LA10 and I think a better engine martin

Status: offline 		There's always this nice 09 Cox TD Deisel from Jon Fletcher. He has it on Ebay at the moment.
Not bad for a  bloke that has told me a couple of times before that he doesn't modify engines......lol

In all seriousness it's only lack of finances that prevents me from having it.

Status: offline 		Beautiful workmanship on that Cox .09 conversion diesel head. The standard type piston with wrist pin and heavy rod are a good idea.

Davis Diesel made a few .09 heads for the Cox .09 but they stopped because the lower end wasn't strong enough.

I have Cox .09 conversion heads by Davis Diesel and Mecoa but don't want to run them unless I can get a stronger crank.

Tatone used to make a clam-shell type muffler that fits the Cox Medallion and TD engines which will keep diesel fuel residue off your model.
