Rather a quiet Wednesday.

I dug out a few Super Tigre G20/15D diesels. I found three, mostly examples with 1965 and 1970 castings.

All three came from ebay over the years. Two out of three have been used. The third have been mounted but looks like it was never run.

The first G20/15Dturned up about 1965 and used tiny fibre glass props in FAI Combat.

They were screamers beating all most of the other c/l models in competition. The final versions of the G20/15D were still available right into the mid 1980's.

This one is still being run in. It's fitted with a Cox 049 TD venturi and a KK banjo and a NVA.

It just turns a APC 7 x 6 at almost about 16K rpm.

Next Bob's KMD diesel. One of the early and best of the type. It's very tight but it still manages to turn a APC 7 x 6 at well over 16K.

I believe that they were developed as a F2C practice engine. Possibly the best of the commonly available Soviet era diesels.

Another club member turned up with another a few months ago and it easily turned the same prop at well over 16700 rpm.

It was a bit quiet at MP today. A few of the regulars were off Canoeing and the rain this morning must have scared off a few regulars from Sydney.

First up on the bench was Derek's Elfin ABC Clone. I'd tried it before and even with an electric finger couldn't even get a kick out of it.

Last night I had another look and discovered that the backplate was completely loose. Tightened it, made a spinner and this afternoon it went off first hit with my new green 1/2A electric finger.

I ran a few tanks through it and each time it would immediately burst into life first squeeze of the on switch.

Next step is to replace the M5 bolt with a new Brass Comp screw now that the required length has been determined.

My conclusion is that these ABC "Elfin's" may be quite useful little diesels even if they won't hand start.

Next, Ian Smith's very pretty KielKraft Marquis c/l model. Very unusual among-st aircraft of it's era because it's got a tricycle u/c.
Flys very nicely with a dieselized AP Hornet.

Hi Ray,
the Keil Kraft Marquis certainly brought back memories, mine seemed to have the widest fuselage of any model in the club (or so it looked).
I had a very unusual engine in that one - a Hiness 1.5cc single ball race baffle top piston glow (wish I had kept it as it is now something of a rarity.)

Cheers.

Alas Martin,

I've just been told that it has a glow .15 sized version of the AP not a dieselized 09. Still pulls it around very nicely.

I always wanted one but by the time I could afford the kit I knew that very few of the available 09 engines available were strong enough to power it properly. Not the case these days of course.

I do have a good copy of the plan available easily off the web.

This brings back memories Ray.
I remember purchasing the KK Marquis kit along with the Mercury Marvin from Hobbyco. Marvin powered by a  Taipan 1.5 diesel and the Marquis was powered by my Cox 09 TD so the Marquis had plenty of power.
I'd love to build both of them again one day.

Hi Fred,
I would have thought that a Marquis was not 'vintage, enough for you mate!

Sadly mine was the only control line model that I have built that lacked a tip wieght - and that sort of turns the model into a kite with you running backwards until the fuel runs out.

A beautiful autumn day today at Mannering Park, except the shrubs seem to think it's spring.

Lots of diesel activity both on the testing benches and in the air.

First, running in a new MOKI 2.5cc Sports Diesel.

These date from the 1970's and were sort of comparable with a Rossi mk2 except they were plain bearing.

A lovely engine. Still tight but turns the standard APC 7 x 6 at a good rate.

Another PAW TBR GST2 diesel. This one has a new minimum diameter c/l Combat style NVA assembly to give even greater carby/venturi throat area.

A Parra head button conversion of a popular plain bearing glow engine.

Anyone guess which one?

Ray,

What prize for guessing?

Is it that brand you're determined to get working?

The PB Moki looks good. It's a pity we don't do Sabre racing anymore. That looks the bees knees.

Fairly obviously the AME/Norvel 15-the exhaust port duct and prop drive assembly are dead giveaways (to those of us who own one.....)

No prize!

Yes the MOKI is a wonderful thing, I've been on the lookout for one for at least a decade. You've already guessed why.

Yes it's a pity we've retired but there may be a chance for a comeback in the distant future. I mean look at the Rolling Stones.

Actually only the crankcase. shaft and backplate are original plain bearing Norvel.

The rod and NVA are Enya, the p/l is generic mk2 Rossi, the cylinder fins are home made, as are the venturi , propnut assembly, and ring head.

The push/pull button is Parra.

Let's hope the bottom bend holds together!

This is Bob's work though I have a similar one on the way. The important feature of this one is the head bolts which replace the screw in system.

This caused a liner retention problem.

Liner retention problem? Can you elaborate Ray? [I have a NIB BB and a used PB glow example, both yet to earn their keep-wasn't aware of any 'issues'......]

Perhaps I should have said "liner alignment" problem.

We've been having trouble with hot starts in a particular c/l racing events with Norvel PB glows.

So we ditched the Norvel "Revlite" coating, bored out the cylinders and fitted 18 mm diameter Rossi mk2 cylinders.

These work well but the head button/gasket is still retained by the screw in locating ring.

When we get a good seal the hot starting problem goes away. If we have to add or subtract a head shim we can have

sealing problems partly because the liner and/or shim rotates slightly. which seem to affect the hot starts.

Pinning the liner is a possible solution. Replacing the lot with a simple bolt on head is much more attractive.

Pic shows a Rossi style liner within a Norvel 15 cylinder.

From the outside you can't tell the difference.
