Hi everyone,

My first post here. I'm good over 30 and my kid 3 years old now. Instead of buying steering wheel for computer (my wife promised me that years ago, but  with one condition: we will have son ;-)) I thought it will be much better to get RC car.
The problem is I'm complete ignorant in this area, never had any RC toy (not mentioning few cable-controlled cars when I was kid). I know I want off-road (mostly due to location and freedom of fun it gives) and rather electric (as I'm not fanatic yet(?) and want to avoid instant cleaning and servicing engine). Car should be big (1/10, 1/8 best), tough and what is really important - should have option to limit performance, let's say to 20-30%. My son is small and I want to have a chance to react than go into the river fishing the car ;-)
My budget - max $650. This includes everything (with good batteries and charger).

What I was thinking about so far:
HPI Trophy Truggy FLUX 2.4GHz RTR
Team Associated - SC10RS Brushless 2.4GHz RTR - looks nice like normal car (which might be important from my kid's view) but 2WD and smaller than model above

But - I don't believe sellers in general :-) They must have some point suggesting some specific model. Also $650 for toy is quite a lot of money for me.
So here are my questions/requirements:
1. only 4WD for novice, especially it's off-road car or 2WD also great and shouldn't have any problems with having fun with it?
2. I want water-resistant toy, so maybe driving in snow, in wet grass, maybe through some shallow water...
3. buy ready-to-run or better something to build? I'm not afraid of screwdriver, but I don't have any pro tools and my budget also shouldn't cover it too much. I also won't bend aluminium :-) So no complicated work at the beginning because I don't want to discourage myself even before I start riding. Also - I'd need detailed list of parts I should buy to have complete kit.

Any thoughts, advices? I'm not closed/fixed to any specific producer/model/something. What's important is shipment to Poland ;-)

Thank you all in advance and sorry for my language.

Cheers,
gajos

the traxxas:
slash 2wd vxl
rustler vxl
stampede 2wd vxl

all of them have the features you want.

all for offroad. all are 1/10. all easy to work on. all are brushless. The speed control has a 50% "training" mode for the kids. They are waterproof. Parts are availible EVERYWHERE. Tons of upgrades availible as well.

this add is for a brushless traxxas slash 2wd, with traxxas newest radio system, a 2s 4200mah lipo and basic lipo charger
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Traxxas-5807L-Slash-VXL-Brushless-RTR-2WD-Truck-w-TQi-2-4GHz-LiPo-Charger-/200879480555?pt=US_Character_Radio_Control_Toys&hash=item2ec5599eeb

this rustler here is a bit cheaper, but has a 7cell nimh instead of a lipo battery:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Traxxas-Rustler-VXL-2-4GHz-RTR-Blue-3707-NIB-/330772658676?pt=US_Character_Radio_Control_Toys&hash=item4d039639f4

Normally I dont like to "praise" traxxas. But there is a reason they are one of the biggest RC names. They are not the cheapest or most expensive. but they pack alot of good features into their models, have great parts support (largly because many of the models share many parts) and their vxl models are very fast. On a 7cell nimh or 2s lipo they do about 40mph. with the 50% training mode thats around 20mph. and at impacts of 20mph these models can take a nasty hit without breaking easy. Good models for young ones. And if you buy a 3s lipo battery...they will do 65mph!

lots of people have had issues with the Trophy like the drive chain failing soon.(seen 8 people say that)
I've seen a few people say it was the best thing ever(exactly 2 people, one said his was great after he put well over 1/4th the price in parts into it)

What's your point then? Buy parts and build something instead of car ready out of the box?

I think there are very few chain driven RCs today for a reason. Brushless motors are alot of power to put threw a small chain.

If you wanna say in the 1/8 scale, the the ofna lx-e buggy kit might be good. drop in a ezrun 150amp brushless system plus a 4s lipo and you have a powerfull/fast/durable brushless 1/8 scale 4wd buggy.

You can always put larger tires on a buggy and give it more of a truggy feel.

well a decent RC I have is the HPI Wheely king its water proof, and pretty much every things in the box. In the US its like $214 so that leaves a lot of leeway for batteries, and a good charger (the one in the box SUCKS just like the battery). Its also not very fast, and can drive over a lot of things as its got pretty big tires. Also like its name implies it likes to wheelie There is also a lot of parts to customize it like a crawler chassis to lower the gravity center so it don't wheelie.

There's also the SCX10 dunno how much that is in europe though(think its around $400 here) its way better quality then the wheely king(don't think its waterproof though). I've let my 5yo nephew drive mine, and he liked it. Its sold as a kit or RTR

my point was the trophy has some quality issues that takes a fair bit of modifications to fix, and IMO not worth what HPI wants for it.

Oh man... I'm writing this again as my session with forum broke :-(

Ok then. Thank you all for your answers. Last few nights were very short for me as I went through different models, reviews, opinions, movies... :-) It's too much for ordinary mortal to go through it.

Surfing across I found Axial EXO - it looks GREAT. Ok, subjective opinion. Anyway - I found thetoyz.com and squirrel - he has really good videos on youtube. Including review for EXO and Wraith - none for me, or just I won't buy any.

I found g-made R1 Rock Buggy (http://goo.gl/4D3tI) - looks cool but ain't it mainly crawler? I'm looking for basher so it might be not for me.
I have no track close (or far) to me - welcome to Poland ;-) I heard there are plans to build one track in my current city, they planned to build it past year but so far - nothing really done. In that case I will have some fun in parks, parkings, plains near river, woods - I'd say 90% driving in the wilds ;-)

I probably mentioned few times - I'm noob regarding models and rather not tinkerer (at least didn't had anything really to tinker with). But I'm thinking about kits. Below I'll give my list of models - if you know them please let me know if it's even good idea to try to build from scratch by someone with my profile. I thought it might be good for me to build - then I might learn how it's build, what goes where, how to repair, replace, maintain. I think that in case of real problem I'll drop my kit to nearby rc-shop to build it :-/

Here's my list of interests:
- Team Associated SC10 - I saw few editions: kit, rtr, rs rtr. Does only rs have brushless motor? Is it big difference (worth FOR ME) between kit and rtr here? Additionaly guy in nearby shop did not recommended it for me, because... I don't really know. Probably because of required skill to drive it? Toughness? I didn't get any specific and good reasons, just 'I wouldn't recomment that one...'
- Traxxas Slash - different models, 2WD (#5803), 4WD (#6808)... which one? I saw only rtr versions.
- HPI Blitz - now... RTR and ESE (kit). I find kit REALLY cool but: worth to think about kit if [look few lines above]? Big difference between RTR and kit?
- HPI E-Firestorm Flux - don't really know... it's not short track :-) the looks isn't too attractive but maybe I shouldn't really care about it as it's best option?

So that's it. For kits (assuming you will encourage me to go this way) - I'm not looking for top-notch electronics. I don't see point to buy best if this is not my hobby yet ;-) and I'm not sure if it will be. So something good with reasonable price :-)
I also want to stay with 1/10 scale - less money for lipos...
Please, save my suffering :-)

Oh, forgot to add. 2WD or 4WD? I think that 4WD will be better solution but... I have RWD car and not afraid to use acceleration pedal so I think I can cope with RC 2WD too. But I might be wrong - am I?
It's also VERY IMPORTANT to have possibility to reduce performance/power to 50 or even 30%

It takes a really hard hit to break a traxxas. I hate to say it they are not the greatest ever but they are cheaper
compared to other brands and they have the most bang for your buck. I p-ersonally wont own another traxxas
but they are a good learning tool for the beginner. Im already on EXPERT LEVEL so a traxxas to me would be useless.
They are designed for backyard bashing not racing even though they say on the box "READY TO RACE".
It should actually say READY TO BACKYARD BANG. As they are hard to break.

The Duratrax DXR8-E isn't bad. It's a buggy, but it's 4wd.

Also, like phmaximus said, the Tamiya CC-01 is not at all a bad choice.

Is your terrain rocky, grassy, wet, lowland, dirt, or hilly? Your answer will really narrow it down to what class you should get, and then we'd be able to lead you in the right direction of one of the best in class vehicles.

I'd say mostly grassy/lowland/dirt.

Duratrax is completely unknown/unavailable in PL, so I'd pass this one :-/ Additionally, it's 1/8 scale - I wish to have one, but with first one I must pass...

I'd say go with either the Traxxas Summit, or the (though it's 1/12, which is completely opposite) the HPI Wheely King. Also, if the company Arrma is available, the Granite MT is a nice truck. I think you'd be happiest with a Savage HP, but if you want to include a charger and batteries, then it's gonna be out of your price range. But it's probably on the BEST trucks out there.

the WK is marketed as 1/12th, but the wheel base is about 1/2 inch shorter than the Pede 4X4, and about 1/2 an inch narrower(outside tire wall to outside tire wall).

if its the 1/16th summit that thing has too much power IMO to be fun, and will spend most its time on its roof (ask nitrosandsportsrunner about his he had )

Decision almost made - going to shop next week for last look. Comparing Slash VXL  RTR vs. SC10RS RTR.
I expect to choose wisely and later have a lot of fun.
Thank you all for help.

Yea, you know very well how to mess people's mind, don't you? ;-)
I'm still going to check both and then decide :-)
