I'm thinking about getting this jet and haven't found too many threads on RCU discussing it. It seems to be similar to the Ultra Lightning and is made by CARF but fixes some of the annoying things int he UL mainly:

1, Better Stock Gear
2, Larger Fuel Tanks for bigger turbines
3, The turbine hatch is at the top and NOT the bottom.
4, Cockpit doesn't require a screw
5, Better rudder stab setup.
6, getting rid of the silly gears doors on the mains, no one really liked them.

Here is a video:

How do you like this jet so far, what are the likes and dislikes and how does it compare to other jets in its class e.g. the UL, UB, SS (super scorpion)...

Thanks,

Is it a true fact that CARF produces the Shockwave for Shulman Aviation ?

If yes then I'd be really interested. I love my Ultra Lightning except for having to access the turbine thru the bottom belly pan.

well the wing tips are swept up like the UL and the fact that composite arf builds it should really point to the similiarties, at least in construction anyway, they use the same bypass from what I understand.

Anyway another nice thing is that the fuse is 1 piece, I really hate the nose of the UL with its screws so its nice to see them gone, plus the UL has a stubby nose and this is more of a pointy type.

Finally its has been put to its paces by dave who isn't easy on his jets so you know it won't break in flight (at least the fixed version after the crash at that jet event).

A very nice JET. I like the way it flies, the scheme, and most importantly its beautiful lines. Has this just recently become available? Now i want to sell my UL.
What engine was Jason using in the plane?

AMT Olympus but he says it will best to keep the plan light and stick to 180 size turbines. I would be looking at putting a JB220 (Behotec 220) in it as it puts out 50LBS of thrust and is still in a 120 size can. That or the new K-200 kingtech when its ready.

I guess the first thing that comes to mind is its really light, really strong and big. Mine weighed 39bs dry with a P180 installed. That weight enables the jet to do some pretty amazing flying manuevers. Ali and Shui have done some amazing flying with this jet and have done some flying I have never seen done with a jet.
Its 106" from stab to nose and 90" WS
I think the intent with this jet was to be really aerobatic.
It will even fly on a 36lb thrust motor. That review is coming soon.
The one piece fuse makes it strong and saves on weight. The horizontal stab is also one piece and a breeze to remove with two screws. The fin slides off with one screw and the main wings are held on with a bolt each. Easy to assemble, disassemble and transport.
The kit comes with 3 fiberglass fuel tanks that hold 6.8 liters. tons of fuel for any size motor. JMP fuel fiting are included in the kit. Large bore fittings for unrestricted fuel flow. A very nice upgrade!
I personally think the P180 is the ideal motor as this gives it more than enough power and keeps it light.
The kit also includes a nice size smoke tank as well.
The kit comes in several different paint schemes and the finish is very nice. They are painted in the mold, and do have the seam, but its not that bad. Same quality as Comp Arf, but not quite as nice as an UB.
The kit does include a doubled Carbon Wing Tube that is rediculous strong.
The bypass is included as well as the turbine tailpipe.
All formers are installed at factory.
The kit also includes installed carbon control surface horns. All done at the factory. Very nice and very strong. Doubled in fact. All surfaces live hinging except for the rudder but it is also already built, hinged and completed.
hardware for pushrods and wing, stab, fin bolts all included. The hatch is already finished as well as the canopy hatch already fitted and latch pin done. Just need to glue in canopy glass and screw in cockpit deck.
The landing gear are made in Germany and are trailing link and very nice. Nose strut looks awesome!! Great for any surface, even grass, making it an all terrain vehicle. The gear absorb the impact of any landing with ease.
The kit does not include any pneumatic equipment. Everyone uses something different these days, especially with electric conversions, so this was not included in the kit. So no valves, air line, air tanks, quick connect, T's etc. I usually chunk the stuff that comes with kits and get my own anyway.
Very simple jet to assemble. Most of the work is already done. Biggest pain is to fit nose door, hinge it and make it operate. Hopefully future kits can have this done at factory. mounting landing gear is only other small chore involved besides the installation.
Goes together quick.
Very large hatch for easy access to turbine area. No taking off the tail to install the turbine or flipping over to access turbine area. large canopy opening with plenty of room for intsall.
It only comes with cockpit deck that has a molded in seat with dash, so no fancy smancy cockpit kit to win super scale detail contest with. very basic setup.
All servo covers are precut. just build the pushrods and install the servos.
Probably the most prefab of others in its class.
no instructions yet, but theres nothing to build.
What makes it stand out from the crowd would be its flying performance. very wide envelope. excellent slow speed handling as well. very slow knife edge and holds. can even climb out. very fast to very slow jet. vry stable too. it just nosed over in a stall, no snap or wing over.
pros: awesome flyer, great looks, grass capable, super strong and rigid, will fly on 36 lbs and above, smoke ready, good price, easy build, cruiser or speeder, aerobatic, no bad tendacies, almost any motor, nice size. easy access
cons: nose door work, cockpit a little plain,
Ill think of some more.
Scott

Looks excellent, this is the plane the Ultra Lightning should have been.

Some more q's:

1, the hardware is is the cheap threaded rod that comes with the carf stuff? If so I'll have to get
2, Were the air cylinders for the door included?
3, Yes it sucks these aren't done at the facotry, CARF makes excuses, but my corsair carf air had these done and it had 6 doors!
4, Where did you get that stand does it come with the jet??
5, The gear look nice but they seem to have the SAME WEAKPOINT as the carf gear that lower arm that has a has T where it has a rod to keep the spring and then a set screw to keep that rod in place... This could be a problem. I'm wondering if it would be possible to retro fit some ER-50 Gear for the mains and the nose and use struts. Can you post the lengths of the nose and mains? Would be great if they match the lightning strut lengths.

Thanks for the updates, can you do a build thread?

1, the hardware is is the cheap threaded rod that comes with the carf stuff? If so I'll have to get same threaded rod, but it works fine for me. I kinda like the rod ends as they fit between the two carbon horns perfect
2, Were the air cylinders for the door included? not included. just need one robart air cylinder
3, Yes it sucks these aren't done at the facotry, CARF makes excuses, but my corsair carf air had these done and it had 6 doors! they been asked to do in future
4, Where did you get that stand does it come with the jet?? Im having these made. all aluminum, super nice, strong and light. also adjustable. cost will be around 350-399
Would be great if they match the lightning strut lengths. gear are strong and I been flying off grass and everything else. im sure anything can be made to fit. Im actually converting mine to electric to get rid of air. Ill get some lengths

Thanks for the updates, can you do a build thread?Im working on that now

Cool beans, are you converting your gear via down & locked or taking the struts and putting them in something like an ER-50?

These could possibly work: http://www.electron-retracts.com/products/retracts/er-50.html

What about Electric Actuators? I see you sold all of your lados... I have 3x30mm but they are pretty fat...

This forum is really informative and interesting. The Model is very nice too. But the pictures posted seems not reflecting the real color scheme. probably due to the pictures are made under sunlight or so. Can I get the real pictures of models with correct color so as we can understand the real color scheme.

thanks & regards,

There are many different colors to choose from. You are seeing two different models. One orange and one red.

I have one of the Shockwaves and all I can say is it is the most impessive jet I have ever bought. It is going to be a simple built and just watching the video tells me it is going to a great flier. I am EXTREMELY impressed with the quality of the jet. the layup is perfect, the finish it excellent, everything about the complete package is awesome. the thing that I like the most, is the wonderful lines of this jet. In my opion it is the best looking sport jet I have ever seen! the more I look at it, the more impressed I am and the more I like it!!

I watched David fly proto at JWM in 2011, and I watched Scotts at KY jets for a bit last year with Ali flying it.. I have not flown it, but my observations is that it might be one of the most honest straight flying planes I have seen.. no coupling at all I could see, very very good slow speed capability, along with being fast too. I watched Ali do dutch rolls with it probably 30mph or so.. darn impressive.. I wish I could get one..

At normal speed, it looked like a pattern bird going round.. didn't appear to need much rudder for anything. Again, just observations, FWIW..

Thank you very much for support and clarification. But sorry to inform that I had made a misunderstood post earlier. What I meant that the pictures shown were a PDF file drawn which may not reflect original color scheme and difficult to follow exact color scheme. So I request to post some original photo taken under natural light so as we can understand exact color schemes.

thanks & regards,
