I finally finished my once upon a time Heng Long King Tiger that I stole from my kid last Christmas (okay - we "traded" stuff and he got the best of me).
It's been a year of learning simple things like how to solder, wire a circuit, fuse your electronics, who is good to buy from and who to avoid and so many other things. I haven't built a plastic model since I was a kid many, many moons ago.
I want to truly thank some of the great people that have really helped me such as Phil (miss him) and Dan. They were and have been very patient.
I made a lot of modifications and suffered the consequences.
I have Active Suspension that makes it ride and look like the real thing. How did I do this you may ask? Simple law of physics. It weighs 18.5 pounds and lurches and moves like the real thing (or so I like to believe).
I learned the result of all that weight such as broken gear shafts (3 to date), stripped track tensioners and a box of fuses plus many more issues. The electronics started out as DB2 then DB3 with TBS (just got it back and it's going into my next project - thanks Dan!) and ended up a TK20.
I'll list some of the modifications here:
*Aluminum internal hull frame
*Aluminum internal upper hull frame with heavy magnets,
*Twin 5000 mah batteries,
*480 cans with Mato 3:1 gear boxes (more about those later),
*Custom twin fan electronics enclosure,
*Custom wire harness and connectors,
*Super Smoker and manifold to twin exhaust stacks,
*Custom heat radiator for the Super Smoker,
*Track tensioners,
*Metal wheels and tracks,
*Custom switch plate for on/off, sound, charging and Super Smoker controls,
*Modified HL turret for quick on/off (heavy magnets) release (nothing attached to the turret top),
*Custom aluminum Apple support and sound on/off switch
*Custom speaker modified from a mini powered amp/speaker (I can plug in my Iphone and play music),
*Custom mount for recoil servo for working with the TK20,
*Custom servo mount for elevation servo that is operated from my new Turnigy 9X transmitter,
etc....

If anyone is interested, I can start posting the modifications as I did take some pictures. Most modifications took 2 or 3 (or more) times to build, break, redesign, etc.
However, I've run it for about 3 hours now with nothing breaking and everything works. The Headlight LED was my last little problem (I still don't fully understand sizing the proper LED resistor...).
I LOVE IT! and the cat and dog hate it.

My next part is FINALLY.... detailing the tank and learning how to paint and weather it. I've been looking forward to this for 9 months. I have my airbrush ready and willing. So, be patient as I've never done this part either (but it will be fun and I have some of the finest artist in DAK to help).

I can't explain how much I've learned and what fun I've had. It's the journey that was the best and people I've met and the knowledge I've gained.

Thanks everyone!

I'm starting the next phase (outside of detailing and painting) which is building an Onboard FPV system for a gunner's sight and secondary camera in a newly designed Apple (yep - one reason I had to buy a lathe...).

Here's some pictures of the final mechanical aspects of the King Tiger.

Holler and I'll post more info on the modifications.

Thanks,
When I started cutting the fenders off, I realized that it was going to take off about 1/4 inch of the side armor. I had to build-up the sides and rebuild the bottom section to fit.
Once you start cutting up a HL and removing the battery compartments, etc., they never seem to fit back together well. That was the first reason why I built the internal aluminum frame for it.

Great looking interior.  Nice to see some real workmanship, you should be proud.  Now get some paint on it and get it dirty!

Nice Job Todd. That is some pretty awesome work.

68 ohms is a good resistor to use wiith LEDs and the 7.2 volt power source.

Todd,
Bust out the airbrush - You know I'm here for you brutha! (LOL)

First things first, when you think you're ready to paint, make sure you have nailed down a few crucial things.

Paint scheme, color and camo pattern (since this is your first you may want to find another KT model to replicate or some good referrence shots of the real thing. Decide how much if any weathering you want to add (factory fresh parade queen, a little dusty, battle veteran, or seen better days).

Decide the type of paint you want to use (all airbrush, or do you want to rattle can the base color and just airbrush the camo colors), do you have a preferrence enamels or acylics, do you even know at this point? And if so which brand. Double check our DAK site as well there are a few painting tutorials.

And of course, PM me and I'll give you my cell, so we can chat if you have questions, or call Ethan he can steer you in the right direction as well

I've seen this KT in person, and the pictures do NOT do it justice. Just sitting in Red Oxide Primer it is a thing of beauty! Todd you really have outdone yourself and its amazing to see the level of quality and cleanliness in your build - I'm in awe of this thing!

Thanks Dan,
Question on the resistors: I used a LED Calculator to come up with 220 ohm resistor at 1.4 w to lower the 7.9v down to 3.3v. When I placed the resistors on a breadboard powered at 7.9v, I could not reduce the voltage down as tested on my Multi Tester.
I changed batteries on the Multi Tester, switched resistors, removed it from the breadboard to test and everything I did indicated no lowering of the voltage.
I had some spare LED's, so I plugged one in. It worked fine and was more dim then the stock LED. Nominal heating.
I checked different forums for information and everything went into electrical formulas.
Am I missing something or do you think my Multi Tester isn't working properly? On the voltage forward from the LED, the voltage is reduced to 1.9 v.
??
Thanks!
Todd

Sorry Todd, I am not sure what might be going on with the multi testor or the calculator for that matter. I have just found that 68- 100 ohms seems to be fine for protecting the LED on these tanks. I was in error in my earlier statment though as I use these on a 5 volt source not the 7.2

Thanks!
I'll be reviewing the DAK tutorials this weekend. First, I need to detail it along these lines: http://www.armortek.co.uk/Forum3b/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2609&start=30
It takes forever to load the website, but the pictures are great and I love the fuel vents and attachments along with the engineering. But, it's a big one!
I'm torn between a winter KT (I know where we live, but been missing the snow) or Desert DAK colors. Not certain. I have always loved the Anneliese, but I'm not doing the big Z yet... Not certain... and that's part of the fun.
See you soon - we'll raise hell on the American side at DAK (I hear there is a Super Pershing that's easy prey?).

Todd, what you are working with is current. The resistors limit current to the LED's, not voltage. Your multi meter won't read current.
I know confusing as all get out.

A very simple calc system for your LED's if you have the LED specs. Will tell you the proper resistor value, wiring diagram, and schematic.

Oooops almost forgot, brilliant work on the Tiger!

Thanks SO MUCH!
I thought I was losing my mind - especially as it seemed so simple. Everytime I would look up explanations, it would delve off into formulas and theories. This is what I needed to know. Thanks again!
tjs
PS: how do you read current?
