I'd like to get suggestions on cutting down the db's on wooden airframe
My question is concerning 2 strokes gas powerplant.Like my DLE20cc per example.
Available mufflers for this engine that cut the noise seem to be hard to find.
Please no electric solution.

Status: offline 		Check with Brison mufflers, I think they have a nice one for the DLE 20 and it is a real muffler, not just a can with pipes. A lot of the noise people think is from there engine is from the prop too, something else to think about, the prop brand and shape can be louder then the engine noise.

i just emailed a message to bisson to ask what i should expect from there muffler.
Since my engine with a xoar 16-6 at 8300 rpm is screaming 89 dbs.
I was thinking about a apc prop also.
maybe soft mounting the engine also but dams they are heavy those engine mount!

Status: offline 		I think I saw the Brison in the Tower Talk I got last week? I use there mufflers a lot on glow engines and they work great. I use the Xoar props on my gassers and find them quiet but it's hard to tell, I use the Jtec mufflers on my gas engines and they are just cans with no baffling. Where I fly we have no noise issues. I have never soft mounted a gas engine other then with the Dubro anti vibe beam mounts and never noticed any noise drop with them? I really never think much about it though so they may help?

Status: offline 		Here we have quite an issue with the noise at our club.
I remember that a wood airframe act just like a drum in raising the noise of a plane.
i actually never try something like a soft mount for reducing the db's but if there sold i believe them to be effective.However i never seen a bird equipped with such a mount.
But i do remember that a friend of mine as bought a new Harley a few years back and he was amazed how much smoother and quieter his bike was.(he had the oem mufflers on it of course)
i will look into it even more.

Also a proper prop turnning a lower RPM to keep the prop from ripping

Status: offline 		I picked up one of these for my DLE 20 and it took a lot of the 'bark' out - along with a three bladed 15/7 prop

Status: offline 		I would think that with the DLE 20 you could use a full tuned pipe. This would be better then the stock muffler and most airplanes that one would want to put the 20 into may not have room for a canister. The use of a soft mount would be high on my list of things to quiet the airplane. When one gets up to this size and larger, wood props seem to be the loudest.

Probably not, the only real reason to install a canister or tuned pipe solely for the reason noise reduction is if there are close neighbors that are unhappy campers about the noise.

Status: offline 		Would those quieter mufflers cut down much on power?  That probably being a moot point beause it his plane is too noisey to fly, he's not enjoying this hobby much sitting in the bleachers.

Status: offline 		I have a DLE-55 with a 23x10 prop and Bisson muffler. At a distance it is hard to hear the engine running. I have even been asked if I was running a canister at times. No complaints on performance (3D-capable airplane).

Status: offline 		My dle 20 is mounted in a Aeroworks extra 300 60/90.As far as power i have plenty so a slight cut in the power output is something i can live with.
Tuned pipe and canisters are not easy to install due to the size of the bird.
What buggin me is that i have a saito 120S waiting on the bench and that that the firewall has been trimmed to fit the rear carb its gonna be a mess to fit the Saito.

GOING TO FLY AT ANOTHER CLUB IS REALY IN MY MIND...

Status: offline 		I dont use 6 pitch props all they do is scream and the xoar props are #1 in my book and I only do wood props just incase of a ground strike god forbid,I'd rather break a prop than a crankshaft.just my 1.99 cents worth.

I have noticed at our field Arizona Model Aviators Mesa AZ that the dle 30 are perceptibly louder than the 20's or 55's   Have a friend that placed 3/8 ID copper pipe with specially made washers pressed on to the copper pipe that slipped into the exhaust pipe on a very loud US 41 Gas motor and it quieted it down considerably. Top end suffered some but the plane was over powered anyway.   There many ways of quieting Gas motors. Another one i saw on a large stinger the guy just used a header and strapped a tuned pipe to the bottom pf the plane ... doesn't look that bad (for a stinger) and dropped the sound way down.

Status: offline 		I've got a DLE 20 which I really like EXCEPT for the annoying bark it produces. I'd be more than willing to sacrifice some it's performance for some peace and quiet. Anyone know of a canister/header that fits this thing without a lot of modifications?

i have a deal pending for swapping my dle for a o.s surpass 91.
i know that 120 would be preferable but it should be good.

Go hit the URL tail skid put in post #9. That looks like a cheap answer to the problem. I don't have the DLE 20, I still use one of the old RCS 1.40 22cc engines with a Jtec muffler. I have never noticed it being overly loud but none of the fields I have ever flown at have a noise rule so I don't give it a lot of thought. The little DLE 20 is used a lot at one of the fields I fly at and I have seen it on a pipe and the stock muffler. Either way I didn't think of it as too loud but if there is a sound limit I'm sure it would have reached it with the stock muffler.
