As a starter, I got to apologiize for my bad english skills. In Finland, we don't speak english that much.

I've been building RC planes for about 20years, but I just can't fly them. I've been racign with boats for 15 years, and started with cars for 6 years ago.



I disliked the ability to run in snow, of the stock FG. So, I decided to build tracks.

The tracks are built of two 10B rollerchains, linked via 80mm long 20x20x1.5 alu U profiles.


Story with pics:

 
 
 
I took the rollerchains from a Juko XJ100 sugarbeet machine. The longest chain was about 5m.
 

 
The track bodies, I made.
 
 
Mock-up of the track chains
 
 
Welded sprockets. I used an electrode welder (elektrod svets)
 
 
Chains, sprockets and a screwdriver.
 
 
Rear view. 
 
 
The front 10T 10B sprockets. I machined a 12mm hole in them.
 
 
Yksi ketju paikoillaan, auttanee hahmottelussa.
 
 
Both chains fitted.
 
 
 
 
 
Took a pic fo the track body, when it was dismounted.
 
 
 
I removed every other tooth from the sprockets.
 
The bigger boch is for removal of the tooths, and the smaller is to make it look

Status: offline 		This is exactly what i like with rc's, making and modyfying things yourself Are you going to use the brakes to steer it? That is a pretty easy way to do it, just put the brake servo on the steering "channel" and when you turn to the right the right side will brake and the diff does the rest Looking forward to see more from you!

I am going to do the steering exactly like you said. Brakes on both sides of the diff.

Status: offline 		I've worked on the tracked vehicle (can't call it a car anymore) a bit today.

 
I milled from the front 10t 10B (5/8") chain sprockets the every-other tooth away.
 
One track test-fitted. I also builded a rotating table for the car, because it's getting heavy & too big to keep on my knee.
 
 
I also built a stornger rollbar of 10x40mm iron, and those round iron bars that you put into concrete. Sunno what they're called in english. Betongjärn in swedish.
 
 
My lights, and the rollbar.
 
 

I'll work on the vehicle abit more tomorrow.

I like what i see! But are you going to have some rollerwheels (or what to call it) between the front and rear-wheels? Atleast something that keeps the tracks tensioned?

Status: offline 		With only front suspension and the width fixed the suspension is going to bind or push out on the outer rails unless at least one side has freedom to move in and out a little (I imagine it'll move around 2mm per side), if the side rails are wood you can probably get away with them being rigid mounted but not if they're metal.

Other than that, interesting build!

Status: offline 		 Im goign to remove the front suspension and add some smaller wheels, maybe with suspension. Not sure yet. I dont need to drive 60km/h onto a snow wall, and jump 5m. Just the capability to drive in snow and terrain is the whole idea of this project.

There has been some progress today. I modified the rear end of my rollbar, to be easier to remove.
 
 
 
I test fitted the steering servo in the radio box.
 


I got nearly halfway of the second track today, but unfortunately the aluminuim profile ended.

This vehicle is steering, by braking. Braking the left side, it turns to the left. Braking the right side, it turns to the right.

Like a tank, or excavator.

steering via L & R disc on the wheel hub - servos just operate each disc .......your diff will be super loaded up carrying that weight

Status: offline 		I'm thinking rear disc cable brakes on each rear hub and a steering servo with a large enough horn that when you turn one way, the servo will apply pressure to one side and lock that wheel. When you turn the other way, the servo will apply pressure that the other wheel and lock it.
Basically, run the cable from each broke to opposite sides of the horn. To accomplish this, your diff will have to be very loose. Very little grease in it. Just enough to keep it lubed but have it unload when the diff turns.

Umm.. About 25-30kg's. The chains are about 12kg, and the sprockets do 1.5kg. Plus the rollbar.

Status: offline 		I deassembled the whole car, and Ill start all over again, due to the chassis plate was not straight. It had took a few hits, when I drove it as a car.

Luckily, I still have the original plate left.
