I was thinking about getting into the RC tanks and was wondering if the Heng Long Russian KV1 tank was a good one to get. There is a shop near me that has one on sale for $100.

KV-1 is a perfect tank to get started. We started with the KV-1 and a DB-2 for IR battling with our local tank club, DAK. It runs very well with the stock treads and motors (break in the motors FIRST!). By building the DB-2 and modifying the HL Apple, we were able to fight $800 tamiya tanks and win (okay - my boy can do that!).
The only breakdown was the front idler arm is very weak. You can strengthen that easily. There's a ton of mods here and everyone is very helpful!
I liked your post about the KV-1 since it is the ONLY tank that we have that always runs....
It's tempting to modify it - but - it always runs!
For electronics, contact Dan (YHR) for the DB-3 or Clarke for the TK20/22 series.
Welcome!
tjs

The KV-1 is an excellent stock HL tank.

A couple members of our club run them stock (with SLU electronics) and they battle nicely. They're great at crossing terrain and obstacles, ditches, etc. Also there are TONS of mods available for them, from easy & cheap to fairly intense.

You will enjoy it!

And to add to what Tsull said, try out the tank and see if this is something you will get hooked on (most likely) and then it opens the flood gates of tank addiction. The best tanks are the tamiya brand, but if you are just starting out the price will throw most people off. They are well worth the money though. Heng Longs can be upgraded, and when it's all said and done, cost around the same as a Tamiya. Start out with the KV have fun and then decide how involved you want to be. And also welcome to the forum.

Cheers
Wade

I have been in the hobby for about 30 years.. I used to have a Radio Shack tank back in the day and had a blast with it. And I know about the RC addiction, I have it really bad sometimes... In the 30 years I have been in RC's I have owned closes to 175 different RC's....

I wanted to adopt a 21yr old Asian girl, but my wife wouldn't let me. Grats on your child. With the way their ban is now, what a shame. Heart breaking.

Cheers

I know this germen rc tank and i love it very much.Iknow all about it and it is very famous i think you see this at the shop.
This rc tank Since its inception in 1943, its potent firepower, agility and armour served as a benchmark for war-time design, culminating in what many military experts consider as the best tank of WW2, with over 6,000 tanks produced. Now you can own own a piece of history with this full featured 1/16 scale German Panther replica.I got this tank from nitrotek and i m very happy.

The KV-1 is a good tank but tends to like to self destruct quite often.

As for the comments about Tamiya, it depends what you want to do with the tank your spending money on. Some people do choose to upgrade their tanks but many run them stock without issues. Some people buy a Tamiya and spend money upgrading that. All hobbies are money pits regardless of what it is or where you start.

If you want an idea on the scale of upgrades you can do to a HL tank, my `basic` HL KV-1 has about $650 invested in it... granted its the Asiatam metal hull, steel 4:1 gears, Torro KV-2 turret, all metal wheels and drive-train, and an SLU battle system (in the mail..somewhere).

It`s just as good as Tamiya, as far as I can tell

The Jagdpanther is a good runner out of the box as well. Try this site, they have good stock on HL tanks as well. They are on the east coast.

I think most of the big tanks are good runners out of the box...Tiger, king Tiger, KV-1...even panther could be good...maybe because the tracks are wider?
