I respectfully disagree - Heng Long is still very much a work in progress as far as a complete IR package goes. The radio is not hobby grade, the electronics appear much more unreliable and the smoker is a joke. As a basis, yes. As a replacement for Tamiya, not yet, even though they are much closer now. All it takes is for Clark to collaborate with Heng Long and then they would be a force that Tamiya has to contend with.

But then again, Tamiya is much bigger than just 1/16th scale tanks alone. It is entirely possible that they aren't making good profits on their flagship line and I'm sure they are aware of it. But its supported by their other product lines and perhaps they still believe in the value of a halo series of product to raise the brand's image and standing.

All said, for Tamiya to have come out with a line of tanks, electronics, and IR equipment that has withstood more than a decade is testament to their innovation and thoroughness. They have definitely stood still since then, and the rest of the market has now caught up. Dropping the ball is true, but if the same brains and bucks are focused back here, I can't imagine how big the next step might be!

Tamiya will be relevant as long as there is no competition in their class. There will always be people who won't settle for "good enough" (absolutely nothing wrong with that) -particularly the ones that want a most excellent scale model. If a company starts making scale tanks of comparable quality to Tamiya for less cost, then Tamiya will no longer be top dog.

Funny thing though with Japanese companies, Tamiya isn't likely to give a care if someone does the same thing for cheaper, and isn't likely to change their market, pricing model, or anything else.

Kalnaren,  The AAF ships all our kits UPS in the states ( as it is cheaper then USPS) BUT we ship outside the US by USPS as it is cheaper than UPS and the customs duty and
broker fee is also cheaper.  I know the website states UPS in big bold letters.  The museum does not sell that many kits outside the US - so that is why, but I believe
that our FAQ state that we ship to Canada, Russia, Singapore, New Zealand, and many others USPS!  The last tank that went out shipping was $82 to Canada ( don't remember which part),
and I believe the customer said that the duty was around $50.  Hope this helps!

Tamiya has a full page color ad for their RC tanks in RC Driver magazine for the second month in a row.  That can not be cheap.  They have to expect to sell a bunch of tanks for that to be cost effective.  Maybe if all the Danville tankers would write to RC Driver at editorsinbox@rcdriver.com and invite them to cover a meet we could get some national coverage.  They are based up the coast in Connecticut so it would just be a day trip for them.  They also have a section with pictures of reader's cars in high def with a few basic facts about the build.  I hope someone with some real building skills can send them a picture of a Tamiya tank - maybe crushing an RC car.  I have both HL and Tamiya tanks and can see good reasons to own both.  Some simple improvements in the HLs came directly from seeing how Tamiya does things.  jot

Dana, I'm a little disappointed in your choice. I would have thought with your talents you would have gone with the ultimate kit build. Still, I doubt you will be disappointed.

I see they have made a complete right side lower hull with machined suspension arm and torsion bar stations, and idler station. Most, if not all, of the right final drive mount appears to be original, as does the front plate. Of equal interest is the Tiger 1 in the background, sans idler on the right side and with what looks like a complete set of late steel wheels. Tracks are the standard tracks, not transport, and the turret looks either mid or late.

The figure "a grand" is thrown around here a lot, but it is not entirely true. The Sherman can be gotten for under $500, and still is only a couple of hundred more to get battle ready (if you so choose). And if you are building a Heng Long or other lower price to be battle capable with the Tamiya platform, it will run close to that as well.

Tamiya tanks are the pinnacle (IMHO), but they are definitely not the whole hobby. Heng Long is certainly the first step into a great hobby/obsession for most of us. I myself have never bought a new Tam RC kit; I have bought a new KT static motorized and built it as RC or have bought used off eBay (two clutch based, one KT and one Sherman, and one Porche turret KT) and have gutted them, stripped them and rebuilt them in my own warped version. I have also bought 8 Heng Long, mostly new, and have revamped and reworked them to the standard I wanted. I love them all. But my faves are my Tamiya King Tigers and Sherman. They all break down periodically, and I do not do battle comps other than the occasional afternoon with my Dad in the front yard, or chasing my cats around the house. IMHO, there is definitely a place for the Tamiya tanks but no one should shy away from the Heng Long, Mato, etc tanks that are out there as well. Keep in mind there is no way to be in this hobby without being at least a little mechanically capable - the Tams are lower maintenance about you still have to build them.

Europe side....they are closer a grand than not. The shops that seem to sell them cheaper usually prove not to have them at all.

The sherman may be cheaper but not all of us want a sherman. I know the tank might hold a special place in the hearts of American folk...but not everyone is fond of it,

So.....for many of us.....a grand is actually nearer th eprice than you may care to think...... unfortunate, but true.

the Tiger I and the pershing of tamiya are as cheap here as the tamsherman, all three very great runners even straight out a box ... so you can choose for 50 more you have also the king tiger

I suggest you take a close look at that website....... because those tanks with the "low" prices are all marked as "out of stock" (auf Deutsch). Which is actually what one finds with many sites offering the "cheap" tamiyas (which usually end up as being the Tiger and the Sherman). Even though some are trying to make this a HL vs Tamiya argument (which ceased to be a valid one about 7 years ago), its isn't....its about Tamiya being relevant in relation to its price in the face of increased competition. Tamiya arent even high end anymore....the high end is Metallbox, that metal tiger kit from China or any of the specialist European manufacturers. They are not middle ground either as any number of suppliers in Europe can provide heaviliy modified Taigen or similar for a lower price than a basic Tamiya. They were never entry level. The electronics which have partially ensured their position (due to their being used as standard in battling) are no longer so unique with a number of cards/systems offering similar/better quality. SO one wonders....where do Tamiya fit in at all and wherever that is....... are they really the best in that position? p

Oddly enough....I just dropped by there (Axels.).

The only Tamiya (RC .... not ststic)   he has in stock (as per the website) is the TIger (yawnnnnnnn) and the KV-1.

The KV-1 is 617 euro. Thats 804 dollars. Add shipping to Norway...probably touching 900.

Add to that th efact that he is cheeky enough to slap a 4% transaction fee for paying by Paypal ("the free payment solution) and we are now touching 940 dollars.

And I have neither mentioned taxes or customs handling fees.

Cheap tamiyas (ie less than 600 dollars) are a myth for many.

And no thanks....I dont want to buy an already built plastic kit from ebay thanks very much. Whaty is the point in that?

And to compare (for the sake of devilment)... I can get a very nice Kv-2 metal edition (tracks and all) with 2.4 GHz and a pretty nice paintjob and a sweet carrier box by wandering over to rctank.de for 450 euro

http://www.rctank.de/product_info.php?cPath=123_133&products_id=1922

where I also get6 good service and shipping for around 30 euro.

And I also get to enjoy not having to pay to use paypal.

He will never understand that.

Blind typing/posting i think...

sigh...

There's a Tamiya 1/16 full option pershing here for sale... $745 + taxes. That's it's special 'on sale' price.

Come's out to: $856 with taxes. ~630 euro.

Far from the prices he see's at his special store... which honestly most of us don't have access too.

The sherman they have gathering dust is $100 cheaper than the Pershing. Something like $645 or $599 depending the time of the year. Plus taxes.

Far from sub $500. I can't even imagine trying to order one of those... I paid $33 of duty on a $125 torro metal hull... imagine on a $500-$1000 Tamiya kit...
