I thought about going just to say i went once but I wouldn't fly because of the grass. All three of my jets front wheels are on average about 2-3 inches in diameter and my jets are big, only takes a small bump of grass to have a bad day. The best grass runway I have seen is in GA at Hodges but its still grass, very rough on scale jet gear. I personally keep to paved to prevent possible issues but I know some jets have much larger wheels and have no issues on grass.

Plus im unable due to work

WOW!! I chomping at the bit to get there. I went up to PA and flew off of there grass and loved it!

I am coming to FL jets for my first time with RCs. I have flown in to Sun and Fun in full scale a couple of times.

I will be bringing my FEJ f-16 1/8 that I flew last October in PA. Picked up a skymaster Hawk and JL f-15 that I hope to fly there.

See you guys on Wenesday.

Jeff

I hope it is a great event. But for myself, I have not been since the switch to grass.

 I can't wait!!

last year the grass saved my Cougar from needing a bunch of paint work... User induced gear issue prevented all three from coming down. Slid to a stop, fixed the issue, continued flying!

The new method of cutting and rolling, combined with another year of field maturity, will yield the best possible conditions yet. Not to forget that the front row of tents will be for pilots only this year.

I can't wait to see many old friends again and hope to make even more.

Be sure to stop by the RCJA tent and say "hi" to Jessica and pick up one of our new shirts.

Ali,
Make sure you or Chuck brings a big crate.......I just looked at Lakeland weather...Low of 39 F tonight thats 4 in your temp. Cold front just went through today. Hopefully it won't be that way at the end of the month.
I'll make sure I have plenty of antifreeze available. Like tequila?....Ill be in Mexico next week.

Hi Bob C.
I'll be in DFW/ Arlington on the 18th if you or Scott need anything from this way or brought back to FL via Cockpit travel. Just a 2 day trip for me. I don't think that 32 foot trailer would fit in my rollaboard bag to well though

Cheers,
Mark

The grass is not an issue, Florida Jets is the RC jet verison of the Daytona 500. Start the 2013 season off with the best event of the season.

Shelby and I will be there to join the dream team...

Great to hear from you Mark, I may be in Dallas on the 18th getting things together for FJ, not sure yet. If you could fit in a big Futura, that would help. Sean Saddler had a trip to Dallas this week so he spent a couple of days with Scott and I building a Shockwave and some other stuff. I don't think he will call us again when he's in town. He didn't get to bed till one am for two days.

I just checked the weather forecast, and the temps today will be mid 60's f. It will be back in the mid to upper 70's f for the event. To those who worry about the runway, can you imagine flying from a putting green that is about 800' long? That's what its like. Bob and his crew fly their EDF planes from it with no problems. So size is not an issue either. We piston engine types really like the new field.

For what it's worth, I only have access to grass fields for 99.9% of my turbine flying... I never had issues with grass and like Dustin,
on those very few times(twice)  that I had wheels up landings, there was little or no damage anywhere.. I fly primarily at the FARVIEW FLYERS field
in Hamburg PA and at Delaware R/C Club.. home of WARBIRDS OVER DELAWARE!. Luckily both of these fields are quite well groomed and are
rolled occasionally!  I have been to FJ twice and consider it to be VERY GOOD for any type of flying and I'm sure as time goes by it will get better and better.
Anyone who flys jets should be able to deploy those flaps and/or air brakes early enough to grease it in on the mains with no issues.....

Are we there yet? Next few weeks should be fun with a few guys showing up to south Florida before Fljets. As for the grass don't knock it till you've seen it this year. It's in 100% better condition than the first year.

The event doesn't officially start until Thursday. Frank was trying to get the field for a couple of hours on Wednesday afternoon, but I think construction in the area are keeping that from happening.

I've enjoyed coming down for the warmer weather for the past 7 years & getting to know other pilots from literally around the world.

I've only flown 2 of my seven years because it seems that I'm always working on my next jet project during this time...last year it was a Thunderbird scheme Eurosport; this year it's a 1/5.5 FEJ F-16 (wife allows only 1 turbine airframe at a time ).

I did fly off the grass in 2011 with my 1/8 FEJ F-16 & had no issues at all. Sounds like the runway will be very smooth this year (might even need your brakes...lol).

See everyone in a 4 short weeks!

Greg Hames
