CARS II -> World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/2/2013 6:08 AM)

After doing much research on this airplane I decided to pick up one at the Airborne Models warehouse. ( I am 40 minutes away from the Airborne warehouse )

I have had other World models before, many years ago and new the their kits were basically, good in all aspects, I just wanted to make sure they were still good or better, not only they are still good, they are better.

At home I was able to look at the kit quickly before I went to dinner with wife and kids, so far so good, clean well builded, very nice clean wood, the covering I have to categorize it as excellent, no wrinkles so far, just the way I remembered.

Everything you need is included, add your servos, engine, receiver (2.4), propeller and your good to go.

I will have some pictures soon and will add more as I build it through the maiden flight.

I will have an OS 91 Surpass for a power plant with a 14/8 MasterAir.

80 oz carbonite Higtech servoes.

6 ch receiver Spektrum.

2000 ma Nime batt.

change that to a apc 14x6 and you will be amazed at the difference, this plane does a nice knife edge, in my gallery is one that is 8 years old

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/2/2013 9:03 PM)

14x6 APC, I'll have to try that, I'm flying a 60 size P-47 with the Surpass that's why I'm using the Master Airscrew prop but using the Surpass in the Chipmunk will required a different prop for the different flying stile hence the 14x6 APC, thank you for the suggestion.

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/2/2013 9:15 PM)

Here are some pictures of the kit, it all came in plastic bags, the manual is short and to the point, it has drawings of the steps to assemble the model are clear and the translation to English is very good.

Few more.

blvdbuzzard -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/3/2013 2:18 AM)

I have 2 years on mine with a Magnum .91Fs in the nose. She is a great flying plane. I do not do wild aerobatics with it. I just do the standard stuff and I do love flying it as slow as it can, 5 feet up down the center of the runway. With a 10 mph head wind, flaps, it just hangs there like a balloon. She can be wild or mild as you mood is. I do have some covering lifting around the edges and corners. If I ever get another I will put a coat or two of Lustercote clear on to seal the covering before I start building it.

Buzz.

Some of the work done today before going to work.

Looking at the hardware I decided to use all that came with the kit, so far I'm happy with the results, the pictures tell the assembling story.

The Left wing is completed now have to build the Right and glue both.

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/6/2013 1:09 AM)

Completed the right wing, installed the flap servo, glued both half with 30 min. Epoxy.

I noticed the flaps torque rods were loose when I held the flaps against the wing and pushed on the rods, they just didn't have enough glue on the rods/flaps, I solved that by poking some small holes on the underside of the flaps with the exacto knife right over the torque rods and added thing CA to it, problem solve, now the flaps are very solid.

When gluing the two half first I dry fitted them, end up shaving the corners of the wing joiner to have a loose join, when gluing it it was much easier to slide together, the center join is perfect no gap, very clean.

Now moving to glue the tail feathers, I noticed that with the travels recommended in the manual I couldn't get it to travel without having the elevator in the rudder's way, my solution was to cut about 1/4" from the bottom of the rudder to get enough clearance for the feathers to travel all the way to the recommended distances.

I couldn't upload the pictures of the construction earlier because the wifi at home wasn't working, I'll try tonight again.

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/6/2013 1:33 AM)

So far only two things needed some attention, the clearance of the elevator/rudder and the loose torque rods on the flaps, so far it is going fine with the build, I fitted the wing to the fuse and it slides in perfectly, no gap noticed.

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/6/2013 1:36 AM)

I was looking at The WM P-47 and me like, I think a DLE 20 will pull it just fine.

Tailwheel Pilot -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/6/2013 1:59 AM)

I had one for years. I had a OS 61 in it and it flew awesome. What a fun plane!!

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/7/2013 2:44 AM)

Was that a Chipmunk or the P-47?

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/7/2013 2:47 AM)

Some more pictures of the build.

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/7/2013 2:57 AM)

I cut about 1/4" from the bottom of the rudder to be able to get the proper clearance to get the suggested travel on the feathers.

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/7/2013 6:54 AM)

Regarding the rudder and the tail wheel, the instructions show how to assemble the parts, what the instructions do not show is that you have to cut a groove under the rudder in order to have a functional mounted tail wheel, this was easy to do, the vertical and horizontal stabs were very easy to assemble, no surprises there, also it didn't take to much to align the horizontal stab with the wing.

Here is the before and after for the rudder

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/8/2013 1:04 AM)

Today was a super build day, on a day like this I try to build as much as I can for at least 8 hours almost none stop ( only to eat and to run to the bathroom ), this usually happens a day before the kit is done, the next day is completion and detail day and if I'm done around noon then I go to the field ( weather permitting ) to run the engine if the engine runs good then I give it a go for the maiden flight, it may happen tomorrow Friday.

I said I was going to use my 4 stokes OS Surppass but for the moment I will be using my Super Tiger 90 with a Pits style muffler, I'm going to work on the cowl once I decide if the Super tiger stays on the Chipmunk.

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/8/2013 1:20 AM)

The build is going fine, no real surprises just a few things that has to be taking care of as you build the airplane like when I was removing the tape that holds the tail feathers from moving I noticed the Toughlong covering was lifting at the seams, easy fix by using mid CA to stop it from lifting now and in the future.

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/8/2013 1:45 AM)

I did a quick CG check and it looks like it will CG right on the spot, the 2000ma NIMH batt will be sufficient to balance it if needed. So far what I have left to do is to install the pilot and canopy ( glue him on and 4 screws for the canopy ) adjust the deflection on the flaps, instal the on/off switch, glue the covering seams with CA to prevent it from lifting and check the CG.

I should be done by noon and on my way to the field to run the engine ( I will run it at home first before I go to make sure ) and most likely I will be doing the maiden flight ( video for sure ) [:D]

yellerchamp -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/8/2013 1:58 AM)

I have recovered mine and was bending new gear realized that if have misplaced my old landing gear, can you measure the distance from the bottom of the wing to the axle itself,I can guess but since you have one handy........thanks dan

CARS II -

Search RCU for a thread about the twm p47 - lots of great info in that thread. The thread is titled "World Models 70" P-47D THUNDERBOLT".

Ed

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/8/2013 2:21 AM)

I will do that Dan, Ed thanks for the info on the P-47 I will search tonight after dinner.

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/8/2013 2:40 AM)

Here you go Dan, I hope these ones work for you, looks like 4 3/4".

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/8/2013 2:51 AM)

Ed, found it and it is save to my favorites so I can read it starting tonight. [:)]

Thanks again.

Paul_BB -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/8/2013 5:48 AM)

It's a nice plane but World Models have copied Carl Golderg's plans.
I also have a Chippy clone but mine comes from TopModel.
And the TopModel Chippy clone seems to come from the same factory as the NitroPlanes Chippy.

All the credit goes to Carl Golberg. He was a genius !

CARS II -> RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90 (2/8/2013 7:23 AM)

Absolutly, Carl Goldberg was an excellent designer, I build two of the CG Chipmunks a loooong time ago when I was in my rc infancy, that is the why I wanted another one, I considered to builld this one from a kit from TH but I just simply don't have the place to build an airplane from a kit at this time.

A year from now maybe, so I will keep buying kits 'till the time comes to have my own garage, my wife can keep the rest of the house [:D]
