I have the engine ready to set the timing for the C&H ignition, but am looking for the correct number BTDC. Do you just set it @ 28-30 deg like a gas engine, or a little higher. Has anyone actually fiddled with this.

Start at 20°. From there, see if there is any gain in more timing.

The ignition is a C&H, and You are saying to only set it @ 20 deg BTDC. They recommend 28 to 30 for gas engines on there site.

Set if for 28-30. On fai fuel you can remove all but 1 head shim. On gas you need to add some shims or back the timing down.
The CH unit has more than 20 degrees of timing change, atdc timing can result in the engine running backwards.

Would that setting be good for 5% nitro too, since I mix that in 10 gallon batches curently.

The ignition maker has no part in what the engine likes best. Their recommendations are for a different league of engines.
I am used to setting ignitions even lower than 20° BTDC for best power at 12,000 rpm. I am talking racing engines here. Small engines for FAI fuel do not need all that much advance. Low compression engines with mediocre combustion chambers need more. That's why I advised to start at 20°. You may well damage your engine by going to the max advance right away.
Supertigre engines do not have mediocre combustion chambers and are high in compression rate.

No, a little nitro goes a long way in a big tiger. 28-30 deg BTDC is for FAI only.
Pre Detonation an a big tiger sounds like frying eggs,you wouldn't believe the number of times I've heard that sound from somebody trying to run OS quantities of nitro in a Tiger

 Well designed engines do not need (repeat: DO NOT NEED all that advance!!!)

Example:
I currently run my MOKI (hungary) 60cc Test inline twin at a mere 18° advance, and loving it. (on RCexl ignitions). These cylinders are very comparable to the tigres.

Just to clairify this is the small single piece crankcase G2300 (1.40), and not the Large family of Super Tigre's (2000, 2500, 3000, 3250.

I've always run the Tigers at 28-30 degrees BTDC. I adjust the compression IF needed. 4-6 deg at idle and 28-30 at WOT give the best balance of idle, throttle response and power.
Low idle timing slows throttle response.

Yes I have ran across engines that didn't like a lot of timing. Thats why the orginal Syncro Spark ignition from CH Electronics had 4 different timing curves in it.
The Tigers liked the 26 degree curve, the Mokis didn't and a glow Moki really didn't like being converted to gas. Cooling problems and a hollow crank pin.

Current MOKI gas engines run very cool (about 300 - 350F measured inside the spark plug washer). They have much larger cooling fins than the glow engines as they indeed should have.

This thread is about the ST 2300, and ignition with glow fuel. I have no interest in gas results or Moki's. I guess I will set it @ 28 and see what happens. I also have a mark @ 20, so I can slowing retard the timing if I have too. I just thought more people had experience with Glow and ignition, since it is reported to work so well, and quite a few people have done it with Saito's with excellent results, but that is aples to oranges in comparison. I know the Dick Hanson used to run a ST2300 on ignition with Glow fuel, and he said it was an awesome combination.

I have two, and will pick up another when the right deal comes up. The most I have payed so far was $85 for a nib.
With methanol available down the street from my house for $2.55 a gallon, I have no interest in gas, infact I sold my gas stuff.

The 2300 only has one gasket from the factory.
