Anytime. I can foresee you loving the LX so much you immediately start saving for an Xray or a Mugen (which is actually probably more sensible to do with your money, rather than adding options to the LX).

By the way, looks like its in stock at the OFNAwarehouse...

Yup, in stock, but being that Im trying to not go too much farther over budget I think I will wait since its $50 more there.  Im really hoping it becomes available soon at towerhobbies.com since they have their $45 off an order of $350 or more right now.

Hello all, Im back.

Well, my quest to buy a RC Car was derailed.  But not necessarily in a bad way.  Yesterday my wife surprised me (for Valentines day) with a new RC Car.  Unfortunately, it wasnt the OFNA LX2E, but it was the original Traxxas Slash I was looking at getting when I first came here.  She was with me when I went to the local hobby store originally and the owner told me about the Slash.  She ended up buying one for me online with a Duratrax 6Cell  7.2V 4200mah battery and a charger.  I havent even had a chance to open it up yet cause lastnight when she gave it to me we were out and this morning I had to do some computer jobs around town.  Im actually writing this while I wait for a buddy to drop off a computer part I need.

So, I understand the OFNA LX2E would have been the better choice, but I cant be mad as my wife got me something that Ive been wanting and Im sure I will still have a lot of fun with.

I do have a question though, being that I got a stock Traxxas Slash is there anything I should consider modding on it right away that would make my time with it more enjoyable? Also, is a 4200mah battery good for a decent runtime or should I consider getting another?  As always, I would appreciate any information that can be provided.

Thanks

Don't be disappointed at all it's a great truck, that battery will probably give + -25 minute runs,it's always nice to have more than one battery though. I don't really know of anything that should be done right away, the stock steering servo may last a while or it may break on your first run you never know but other than that it's a pretty good truck. You could cut out part of the windshield to allow more air cooling if it needs it.

Wow, I wish I had your wife. I got rid of my ungrateful, cheating hooker. Oh I'm not bitter. Anyone feel free to look her up so she stops calling me.

Also from things Ive heard about their other models and having owned 4 different traxxas platforms, the slash/rustler/bandit/stampede "all sharing alot of parts" are probably traxxas's most reliable trucks, and being traxxas will have ALOT more aftermarket support and all hobby shops will have parts.

brushed or brushless?
if XL-5 the battery would be fine. Might have a premature death cause traxxas vehicles can get batteries hot as hell.
if its the VXL NiMh's don't work very well with then, and usually die a fast death(and might melt). You pretty much need lipos for brushless.

ok its the XL-5 battery should be fine for now a lipo would work best though when you get some extra cash.

BTW don't play submariner with it unless you waterproof the batteries. I'm talking from experience here I submerged one of my RC's with the blue XL-5, traxxas radio box, and a traxxas steering servo the electronics worked perfectly the battery on the other hand started getting insanely hot to the point the heat shrink melted. I opened up the battery, and found the water rusted the contact points on the battery, and 2 of the batteries were leaking from corrosion. The battery I replaced it with I took liquid plumbers tape and completely sealed the ends of it I've used it in the water (not submerged like that one I mentioned) but it got wet enough where it woulda got damaged if it wasn't sealed

The Ofna LX2e is a nice ride and you do not have to wait for them to be in stock with Tower Hobbies.   They will back order it for you and not charge your credit card until it is shipped this way you can but it while they have the great discount of $30.00 bucks for orders over $300.00.   They will honer this price when they ship it too you.

I buy a lot from Tower Hobbies and like their customer service.    I am also a member of the Super Saver Club which is about $10.00 bucks for the year.   With it you get even better discounts thru the year.  For me it pays for itself every year to join.

I agree with Foxy you would have a lot more fun and durablity with a buggy or truggy than 2 wheel drive RTRs.    4 Wheel Drives handle so much better in the dirt then the 2 wheel drives.    The 1/8 Scale are much larger and well balanced for jumping.

I do like the Venom LiPo battery packs because they have universal connectors and all the different style connectors are included with the battery.  if you buy other R/Cs down the road they will have a connector for it.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUUE5&P=ML

I have been looking at getting this Battery Charger because it will charge 2 packs at a time and as of yet I have not heard anything bad about them.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAZZS&P=M

For LiPo Battery charging I always also suggest a Battery Bag because they can be dangerous and you do not want to leave them unattended while charging them.

Did you read anything besides the first post? He already has a slash and it's a great truck, some people prefer the way 2wd trucks handle.

Good luck, and enjoy. As far as upgrades go, I try to just wait and see what breaks, and then upgrade (although it's easy to get carried away at first and buy buy buy).

Maybe another way to look at it is run it, enjoy, but then figure out what annoys you (runtime? suspension? tire grip?) and go from there.

Not a bad car at all. Love the way they look, hope you enjoy it. You can always get something else for yourself later in the year. Tell her you've been bitten by the bug and its her fault, now you absolutely must have a 1/8th buggy. lol. At least if you pick up some lipo batteries for the slash, you'll be able to use them in pairs in the LX2 if and when you do get one.

Well, after a crazy weekend (So much happened) that prevented me from even even opening my new Traxxas Slash I finally got a chance to check it out today. Well, Im already lost. lol

So the thing that I dont understand, and please forgive my ignorance as I truly am a beginner, is how to charge the battery.  My wife bought me the Duratrax Onyx200 charger and a Onyx4200 6Cell 7.2V 4200mAh NiMH battery.  The charger has a molex connector and two alligator clip type connectors.  The battery has a connector that looks like neither.  Do I need an adapter or something?  When she went to get the car and items needed she asked to make sure I would have everything needed, but something is not making sense here.  If anyone could get back to me today I would appreciate it.  Finally got a chance to run this bad boy and cant.  I will go to the local hobby store and get whatever adapter is needed.

Thanks in advance.

The charger probably has a tamiya connector and the battery should have a traxxas connector so yes you need an adapter.

FWIW, I'd change out any Molex connector to ANYthing else. (You got a Slash, yer already half way there, go with the Traxxas connectors.)  The Slash is a BIG truck compared to say an Evader. So it's gonna want to draw a LOT of current. Molex connectors suck at that, and will melt eventually. (WHY Tamiya still uses those things is beyond me.)

Soldering isn't THAT hard if you have an iron/gun that is at least 30W.  If you're not experienced with soldering, get someone to show you. It's not hard if you're shown how to do it right the first time.

Since you're new to RC and this is your first, the setup you've got will keep you happy for a while, until you get the urge for more speed.  The cheap way to go, at first, is going from the 6-cell NiMh to a 7-cell.  That'll juice ya for a while. But the brushed motor will give up eventually (they all do).  So when that happens, if you decide you like the Slash an want to keep it, you can upgrade it to a brushless motor system and LiPo batts.  Or, sell it as a roller and get the Ofna.

I have two Evaders and love them. I started with the original brushed version and NiMhs and converted to brushless later. Fortunatly, DuraTrax came out with the brushless Evader, so I was able to get the metal diff and that solved any tranny durability issues.  And a good front bumper helps too.  My cars will do 40mph, tho not that fast on dirt. And driving 2wd fast on dirt will teach you how to drive and counter-steer.  I find it fun.  I'd love to try a 4wd someday......

Have Fun!!!

Thanks for the info. My battery (and of course car) both have the traxxas connectors, it's just the charger that doesn't. I can't wait to charge up and get the car out. I'm just going to be on the street for a couple of days so I just finished repositioning the shocks per the manual suggestion. I already see my son eyeing my car. All I know is on this, I'm going to get first run.

I wouldn't worry about soldering a connector on the charger just use the adapter, and the slash is actually not much bigger than an evader it's just a big body and wider chassis but It's not like it's going to pull that much current.

I was finally able to take the car out.  It was wet outside because it was raining earlier.  I have to say I had an absolute blast.  Just running the car up and down the street, off curbs, and just doing some sliding cause of the wet ground.  I know this is not the fastest car, but remember, Im new to this.  The only other RC cars I have used were inexpensive ones from big box stores.  So when I got this car out there and hit the throttle and it took off so quick my jaw just about dropped.  In the back of my mind I kept thinking, "wow, and I can make this car go faster with different parts".  Oh man, I think I was bit by the bug already, and that was just one time out.

Now back to the questions.  Actually only one.  So being that it was yet out and there was some debri from trees on the ground, the undercarriage of the car and the actually frame are quite dirty.  Do I worry about cleaning it or do I just let it dry and wipe it down? Whats the appropriate way to care for the car in terms of cleaning?  Ive taken some pics so you know what Im talking about.  I cleaned the body (shell?) already, but of course that was just a rinse since it comes off.

Some people just hose them off, even though it's supposed to be waterproof I would still be nervous to do that with the electronics on it, do you have an air compressor?
