Having a problem setting up esc. here's the equip. Futaba 9C (not 2.4) Turnigy delux 100A SBEC, Sky Lipo 5 cell 2650. I set throttle trim to zero. reversed throttle control (futaba) turned on transmitter set throttle full, plugged in battery. beeped , pulled throttle down to set. My problem...sometimes the throttle works then it starts to cog for lack of a better word. it turns slowly but makes a hidious noise. Then it might work again. I set the esc to the motor specs. made no difference. I have tried other motors and esc's. Various setting and combination of equipment. Same problem. I don't get it. What's going on ??

What you're hearing is the motor getting thrown out of timing.

The first thing I would check is all of the ESC to motor connectors. Give them a good wiggle, even when its running slowly if you can do so safely.

Check the ESC settings. It could be timing or wrong number of cells set for default. Also could be thr throttle range you have set. Try reprogramming the throttle range.

What happens if you set the throttle to low prior to plugging in the battery?

I see I omitted the type of motor used. HET 2W-25. inrunner but I may have solved the problem I was having. After building a test stand to test motors and props; for some odd reason the throttle so far is working without cogging. I previously was testing the engine without a prop. Is this common with inrunners ?

Sounds to me like someone already suggested....a timing issue.

Your ESC should come with an instruction sheet that tells you how to program each feature of the ESC.   Motor timing is one of those features.

I cant recall right off...but there are usually 3 different timing option settings, one of which would be the most appropriate for an inrunner type of motor.

With a little more research on your ESC, Im sure you will be able to find out which option you need to select.

I know that Ive had some motors make a terrible loud/hi-pitchy "screeching" sound like it was "stuck" when Ive had my timing setting not set correctly.

There are electric motors that are named as to what glow motor they compare to but if you want to understand how best to size electric motors, that is not the method.  You want to learn to work with watts/pound.  This is a free book on electric flight that is published here on RCU.

To be truly successful with electric powered flight you need to understand the terms, the components and how to size power systems.  It is very different from wet fuel.
