Hi,
I need to match up a transmitter with a receiver but don't understand channels vs crystal frequencies.

Here's the receiver i want: http://www.ebay.com/itm/150990903988?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648
Here's the transmitter I bought: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330840216508

My transmitter crystal has a 75.510 crystal but the receiver says it operates on channel 58.
uh, I can assume I need a matching crystal for the 75.510 transmitter but wth channel does the transmitter operate on?

Anyhow it's going into a Tamiya King Tiger 56018 but I've used it on several Tamiya Tiger ones and twos like:
http://madlinux.com/tiger/tamiya/ (That's a Tamiya 56010)

Thanks for your help.
Greg

Buy crystals for channel 58. Make sure the crystal are for your brand and model TX and Rx as not all Rx use the same frequency cyrstal for the same channel etc.

If you look at the following chart, you will see the frequencies allocated for RC modeling. There are a series of Channel Numbers and their associated frequencies for each Band. You need to know what Band your are operating on and make sure that both your Tx and Rx are using the same channel.

http://rcsource.hobbypeople.net/faqs/freqlist.htm

Your Rx will be marked as Single Conversion or Dual Conversion. There are different crystals for Single Conversion Rx than for Dual Conversion Rx. Legally, you are not supposed to change Tx crystals yourself as the Tx needs to be retuned by a qualified repair shop. This is especially important if change from a very low Channel number to a very high Channel number.

Your transmitter is on 75mhz channel # 66  which is frequency 75.510 and is for surface use.
The  receiver you bought is a 72mhz reciever with a #58 sticker  for aircraft use .
You will need to find a 75mhz receiver either with a channel #66 crystal or put a 75.510 crystal in it..  Or send the 72mhz receiver out to have it re-tuned to 75mhz so you can use it with your transmitter.
You already bought all of this stuff and I don't know how many channels you need for the tank ,but if it is only three you could have got a pistol grip transmitter and receiver on 2.4ghz surface frequency for around $40.00.
www.valuehobby.com/radio-systems-servos/radios/flysky-gt3b.html

At this point you could look for a 75mhz receiver with a #66 crystal and then sell the 72nhz receiver(they usually fetch around $10-12.00 here ).

I missed the little sticker on the back of the transmitter indicating channel 66.

You can't put that crystal in the 72mhz receiver you listed in your first post unless you send it out to a radio shop to be re-tuned to 75mhz.
If you have that short crystal you now need a 75mhz receiver that will work with that "short " crystal. Like this:

www.ebay.com/itm/Futaba-R153F-3-Channel-FM-75MHz-w-o-Crystal-FUTL0364-/330487438706

I wouldn't pay that kind of money for a reciever so you may be on a long journey to find a decent priced used 75mhz receiver for use with that radio. The crystals are out there depending what type of receiver you end up finding:
www.hobbylinc.com/rc_radio_frequency_crystals_75_fm

You may want to post a wanted ad on this and other forums for a 75mhz receiver.

So, I got all the parts together but it doesn't appear to work.
I tested a working Transmitter/Receiver so the tank works, just not the gear I bought.

Summary:
Futaba T4YF 4 Channel Transmitter with a TX 75-510 Crystal. The Back of the transmitter says channel 66
Futaba R168DF 8 Channel Receiver with RX Channel 66 75.510 Frequency

All seems a go. The only thing I think could be the issue is:
- 4 Channel transmitter vs an 8 channel receiver
- TX vs RX Crystals in the receiver/transmitter
- The difference in crystal "Type" They're different.

Don't know enough to troubleshoot it.

Stuff collage here:

I am going to take a stab at it and say that you are putting single conversion crystals into a dual conversion receiver. It won't work.

You have two problems. The front end or RF section of the receiver is tuned to the 72 MHZ band. 3 MHZ off and internally the local oscillator ckts have components that are tuned to the 72 HHZ band also. It probably wont oscillate and therefore the reciever won't work. Several people have suggested that you send it to a quallified tech to have it tuned or the proper components installed so it will work. This is the only solution for that receiver. That might be more costly than finding a surface receiver that will work. Just an old techs opinion. Sam

According to the photo, the R168DF receiver is already on the 75 MHz band. It's a dual conversion receiver so that's why the single conversion crystal won't work.

Since the transmitter is on channel 66, then all he needs is a Futaba dual conversion channel 66 receiver crystal. Tower sells them for about $7.00

Thanks!
Just bought one, hope it works. Figured I was good if the freqs and channels matched up, guess not.

I very much appreciate the time people took to write.

Yes it looks like you have the wrong crystal. Provided the receiver works, the yellow tab crystal should fix the problem,

Since you're already into this I doubt you'll be inclined to change, but your experience illustrates the value of asking knowledgeable people about what to buy before spending your money. For less than you've already spent getting an old radio set to work, you could have had a brand new 2.4ghz unit already matched to itself properly with a factory warranty and all new batteries. Making old equipment work is rarely worth it in the long run.

You are correct. I didn't look too closely at the picture. The Crystal in a dual conversion receiver is 10.7 MHZ away from the frequency you want compared to 455 KHZ on a single conversion receiver. There is a second crystal in a dual conversion receiver that is not replaceable without some solder work, but it is the same freq on all receivers. It should work with the proper crystal in it. If it doesn't something else is wrong.
