We've seen lots of comments on a few of the hobby shops that have not so good reputations (to put it mildly).  But I haven't seen anything yet about dropshippers in general.  Anyone else agree with me that especially in an area that often requires a lot of help and knowledge, dropshippers screw everything up for legitimate stores?  I just looked for stores near me and found basically one!  Everything else was a dropshipper.  And the closest "store" sold a whole bunch of junk not even closely related to RC.
I know it's "buyer beware" but you would think that someone accepting these people as "stores" would at least take a quick look at the website.

Amazon.com is the biggest drop-shipper out there.. it's not the industry model, it's the seller to be cautious of. There are good ones and bad ones.

And yes, the game changed, that's why hobby shops have gone under (notice the past tense),, sad but it's the reality

Apparently your definition of a dropshipper and mine are not the same.  Amazon has huges warehouse all over the place - that is why there is such and issue with collecting taxes on affilate sales and why they dropped affiliates.  Dropshippers do not stock product.  They merely take orders and route them to the real store.  And of course take a cut but no responsiblity.

There are so many  drop shippers out there.      If I don't see a physical address or a  phone number  on their website,    I just move on.       Nothing worse than sending  your hard earned money,  getting nothing and then not having someone to talk to about it.

There was a drop shipper in   Russia that took a lot of people's money,  never shipped anything and then they were gone.    Everyone that place an order for their  rediculously low prices lost out.

There were some posts about it here on RCU.

There are a several good hobby shops in CT, where are you looking? Even Tower is dropshipping the Aeroworks line. The most stocked one in CT I have been in is RCHobbies n More in Winsted. List below is using the 06611 Trumbull, CT zip code. Dropshipping is becoming the norm, as not every place can stock everything for everyone. The RC market is so fluid and changes so quickly, it's almost impossible for a shop owner to keep up with all the latest and greatest....

I consider a Drop-shipper any web based business that sells something that is shipped from another location and/or Vendor. Amazon has a few different models, but I'd bet money that much of their so call in stock products are shipped from Distributor networks other drop-shippers use too, not their own private warehouses.

You are right, many fly by night ones out there to be cautious of, especially in the hobby business,, you can become one yourself here http://www.sdshobby.net/shippinginfo.html?1=1&zenid=37eb99161b340b3c60385e6bf72fdc11

Amazon may or may not be a drop shipper depending on your definition, but whether they are or not, they are a bad example of what the OP was getting to here because Amazon will make it right if you are dissatisfied with the transaction in any way.

I've been to the Hobbytowns in both Fairfiled and New Milford (not shown above) and the old location of Danbury Hobby Center.  On the other hand, James Wang is a perfect example of a "dropshipper".  I know that address for two reasons.  First it is right across the street from work.  Second, it is where my PO Box is located.  His PMB-106 is aka PO Box 106.  I tried to find JP's one day but could not - but then he does show hours so I'm going to have to look again.  Funny, htough, there are at least 4 other "hobby shops" shown in this area's yellow pages that again, I cannot find.

I don't think it is hard to understand - I think we have a difference in the use of the word.  I would think that very, very few people would consider Amazon a dropshipper.  Yes, they do have other sources but you are told who they are before you order.  But there is no semblance to the internet storefront that has no inventory whatsoever, no physical location, no customer support, nothing except an automatic router to another real store.  I have read many postings by people who are proud that they make tons of money doing absolutely nothing and if a seller goes out of business they take their own sweet time taking down those products and refuse to acknowedge any customer complaitns about them.
And I have the instructions on how to set this up for myself - I just am not that dishonest.
