Richard, can you tell me where you got the aluminum wheels for your Sullivan tires from? I would like to get a pair of smaller ones for my Corsair as well. I am planning to install the retractable tailwheel so I will use my new Surpass II 91 and will use a 12x8 Graupner prop that I will paint to make it look scale. I also plan to order a couple of APC 3 blade props I could probably run a 13x6 3 blade because the blades are much thinner.
    Thanks Joe

Hi Tom, I am going to try and pick up my Corsair over the weekend so I will be looking forward to your post on how you installed flaps on your Corsair.
    Happy New Year All
    Thanks Joe

Joe, I got the Sullivan wheels (#S851) from Tower Hobbies. You can check out these wheels by going to: http://www.sullivanproducts.com/WheelsMainFrame.htm

Unfortunately, 3-1/2" diameter is the smallest size available. The aluminum hubs look nice, but they don't look like scale 8-spoke Corsair hubs.

How about these *bling bling* 3-1/4" diameter scale 8-spoke diamond tread wheels?

Hi Richard, they look awesome where can I buy a pair of them in 3 1/4 inch? They should fit in the Corsair shouldnt they? I will be using the CJM retracts and struts so I would love to have those scale looking wheels and tires? I am still looking for a trim pattern too airbrush on my Corsair? I am not sure if I want to do the three color scheme or not. I may just airbrush the bottom of the plane white or light gray like some of the planes that where in service back then. I need to go out this weekend and pick up the Squadron Signal Corsair book and look for a colorful trim scheme. I am really looking forward to following Tom's post about how to install flaps on my Corsair. It will look great with a little trim and flaps and the wheels.
    Thanks and Happy New Years
    Joe

They are just Robart #134 scale wheels. You can buy them from your LHS or here.

Yes, they will work with the Corsair.

I used a spray can of chrome intended for automotive plastic trim pieces.

Books on Corsairs are really useful. You can also find lots of pictures by going to
Google, click on the Images tab, and type "F4U Corsair" in the search box.

Thanks Richard, Google is a very good source for pictures they have a ton on the Corsair. I am looking forward to getting and building my plane. I am going to order the retracts and struts from CJM tomorrow. And I am going to try your trick on painting the Robart wheels, they look very nice.
    Happy New Year

I just took a look at the firewall, and about 50% of it was only 1/8" thick. No wonder there were reported problems of the firewall cracking and breaking. The firewall is not a place where you want to reduce strength just to save some weight. It will definitely require some serious reinforcement. Also, it appeared that the firewall got some up thrust with respect to the rear stab. As a result, the plane might require a lot of down trim to fly level. Hangar 9 doesn't listen to their customers, so I doubt that the firewall issue will be solved anytime soon.

Well that sucks and it means that it will take some serious work to keep the firewal in the airplane. Even if you epoxy on a 1/4 piece of ply you still need to figure a way to keep it attached to the fuselage So you need to install triangle stock and some 4 ounce fiberglass cloth and I will use my West Systems Epoxy to lay the glass in. I can cut the 1/4 ply plate to size with my jig saw and the triangle stock is no problem. I guess that I can fix the up trim on the firewall with washers under the motor mounts. That seems like allot of work for an ARF and plus I will replace the gear and I want to install the flaps.

Has anyone owned or seen the Giantscale.com Corsair? I know its larger but its got flaps and you can get retracts from CJM. I just dont know what the quality of the plane is like, any owners out there?
And its on sale too http://www.giantscaleplanes.com/Corsair_76.htm
    Thanks Joe

The GSP Corsair had some problems with the wing breaking and the center section warping and melting. You might want to do a search. Plus, the plane comes with tiny 3" wheels and landing gear that spaced too far apart, so the plane looks goofy when it's sitting on the ground.

    Ray and Richard,

Thanks for the reply about the 1/4-20 Steel vs. Nylon wing bolts. I will follow my instincts and your advice and go with nylon.

    Best wishes,

    Tom (RC4Fun)
