I'm looking to find tanks that are larger than 1/16 scale. I know that there is a 1/12 Abrams out there, do you think it's worth the purchase. Is there anything else out there that would be larger than 1/16

thanks,

Mike

Sev, have you a link to the company that makes the Panther, it looks very well made.

Larger than 1/16 there are 1/10 which is a bit thin on the ground then 1/8 these start at about 3000€ 1/6 is very popular and carries a vast after-market range of tools and other parts these start at 4000€ up to about 8000€ then there is 1/5 this is very small mainly being built in Germany price is the same as 1/6 but detail is far below then there is the largest of all ¼ these will set you back at least 10000€

Eh? Was?

Bob aren't those Sergey's 1/10 models? I have the SU-152; he'd said that one ( actually 2 of them) was actually built by a colleague with his help.

Yup, Jerry, you nailed it, that's Sergei's SU, actually the Panther is his also.

Rivet, PM or email me. I can put you in touch with the builder of the Panther. The photos fail to show the quality of the beast for sure. I'll in the meantime see if it's still available.

Thanks for all the advice. I developed a passing interest in thanks and was interested in acquiring one. I wanted to get something larger than 1/16 scale but from everything I've heard and read, except for a 1/6 scale Stuart  and a very poorly made 1/12 scale Abrams, which are both reasonably priced, everything else costs in the thousands. Right now that's outside of my price range so not sure what I'm going to do.

There is the 1/6 scale steel kit option....no idea what they are like but field or armor used to make them.  http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/default.asp

Could be crap but at the same price or less than a tamiya ....one is sorely tempted!

Plus he has a nice range of vehicles not found else where.

In fact they have really beefed up that website and are now catering to RC as well as static...

Could be a cheap way of getting in on the 1/6 scale...

I looked over the “fieldofarmortanks.com” website and they certainly do have a nicerange of vehicles. I took a look at the Panther G which sells for$598 plus shipping which in the US is $69. The assembly instructionsare posted online and I downloaded them. Apparently the metal isshipped flat and their instructions state “the concept behind afield of Armour model kit is one in which you bend metal at precutareas to form the various parts of a vehicle or tank”. Consideringthat you have to purchase and install all the electronics, motors, etc. I would think that this model would easily cost over $1000 torun it as a RC model. Still you do have a point that it would be aninexpensive way to get in on the 1/6 scale.

What you will find is the steel is only 2mm thick and will require some form of reinforcement for RC use and also welding the plates together these kits are intended for the static market though with a lot of work you will be able to RC them, you have also vastly underestimated the cost of adding RC to a tank of this scale the motors will cost around 2-300€ plus another 200€ on speed controllers and if you want gun elevation and turret rotation this will cost more a radio will cost at least 150€ the build cost would be more like 1500-2000€ even for this model if you only want to spend a fraction of that then 1/16 Heng Long is for you

If you want some big, you can always go the DIY route. Just head on down to Home Depot or Lowes & you'll find most of what you'll need.

Of course, if you want to build 'em REALLY big, here's some inspiration for ya!

In all seriousness, spend some time looking over the tanks in that second link & contact the builders by email. The site hasn't been updated in ages but you'll get some good intel there.

Also check out The Sixth Army forum where you'll find a few scratch built RC projects but very good to get inspired.

http://www.sixtharmygroup.com/forums/

As pointed out above, it ain't gonna be cheap but it can be done without going the kit route.

I think ist only less than 1 mm thick.....

You'd have to be fairly handy to weld 1 mm thick sheets together without some kind of warping of the metal (no doubt it can be done but for an amateur I doubt its a realistic proposition). So nuts and bolts or rivets is probably the way to go.

the motors will cost around 2-300€

Assuming with batteries and all included the weight starts touching 40 kg......to get that up a 30 degree incline is probably only going to need 15 Nm or so of torque (back of the envelope calculation there). A couple of decent 12 v screwdriver motors for 60 euro or so would probably be enough?

quote:

the build cost would be more like 1500-2000€ even for this model

Still a lot cheaper than the conventional (non-Stuart) way of getting into 1/6 scale? Although how plastic tracks/wheels are going to stand up to a 40 kg tank on top of them is anyones guess........

If your looking to buy the 1/12 scale panzer being sold on a few of the on-line sellers.I can give you a few tips.

( yes i did get your email and mine are not realy for sale......I do have four of them and all four have been up-graded in one way or other... )

These are about the only 1/12 scale models to be found at a fairly cheap price.

That being said they are very poor quality out of the box..........The tracks are a fairly hard rubber and not good at all...The airsoft gun shoots pretty good, but elevating it is a joke as it rides over a very goofy cam set up and is impossible to aim it with any precission.....The sprocket drive train is not good...........a lot of slopp in all the roadwheels.......Transmitter is very poor quality ....and the internal board is also not good..........

Now when i bought mine i already knew most of this about these tanks........I was after the tank hull in 1/12 scale with full intention of guting them like a fish and installing HL tracks...HL Radio...HL gearboxes...HL boards...and speaker.

The tiger tracks fit these tanks very well and work good. But one must remember i built these tanks to please myself and not any of the nit pickers who build models and keep track of every nut and bolt like on the real ones.

I built one of mine with four HL gearboxes..two drive boards..two batterys. All four of mine are different in one way or other.

There are many build threads to be found on the tank forum dealing with these tanks if you know how to look them up....I did two or three of mine on here.

If you are looking for a project........they can be made into a pretty good tank......And fun to build doing it to please you.Don't expect a cheering section here with these tanks....a few members like them

I don't post much here anymore as i'm not working on any tanks.......Still look in most of the time but don't log in.If you have a question on the stock model out of the box ...just ask..

BIGMIG

P.S. If you decide to buy one of them...shop around....The less you pay the better off you will be in the long run.Like most hobby items what you will get out of them is the fun.......Most of the time when you go to sell them you will take a big loss dollar wise.

I took a look at the site:

http://www.rctankcombat.com

And it was absolutely amazing! Guys mostly scratch building 1/6 scale tanks, arming them with paintball guns, and using them for tank wars. If you haven't seen this site I highly recommend you take a look. They have still photos of most of the builds, there are 84 tanks shown, and videos of several of the combats.  they also have armored cars and artillery pieces.

The Tyng Track System is a very reliable system, where you use a left over treadmill belt and rivet either wood or cast plastic pads, it is one of the best DiY's. the chain system looks good also but more expensive. The tracks are the hardest. As far as turret control a motor and lazy Susan style contraption works. The hull 3/4 inch birch plywood works. And then you could accessories to add to make the tank semi realistic looking. All this info can be found on the rctankcombat site. Whatever way you go stick around and post some pics.

Cheers
Wade

Hello mikalle,

When you get your tank and start in on it post it here. The forum has been rather dead as late.

You asked for some info.............go into the search window on the upper part of this page and type in...

second 1/12 scale panzer rebuild (now finished )
very old post dated 10/14/2007

Think you will find a lot of pictures and various info there.........my give you some ideas of what you might want to do on yours.

If someone want to play alone with its tank 1:12 is a good scale (or if you want to play disregarding the other dimensions) , but, if you want to play with other in the same scale I think you must at least go to the 1:10th scale wich is a bit more common. Not too much accessories, not too much tanks, but at least more than 1:12 scale.

1:6th scale is more diffused, accessories, action figures, all kind of vehicles including airplanes, bikes, cars (all war related).

Yes, the cost is higher, but the satisfaction is adequate to the cost.
