I used to unplug ALL my Nicad batteries when not in use to overcome the dreaded "black wire syndrome", which affected the negative wires in the circuit. I was however advised a few years ago by very knowledgable persons that Nicad battery technology had improved to the point that this occurance rarely happens any more. The few that I still use are now left plugged in and so far no problems.

Regular switch, its fine.

Soft or fail on switches or regulators with fail on switches, then yes you want to unplug them.

Soft switches like the Power Safe recievers that Horizon sells and some of the regulators Duralite and Radio South sell (sold maybe?) anyways, the switch holds them in the OFF position when the switch is closed, meaning that there's a very small current flowing through the switch, if the switch fails open (the normal failure mode of slide switches) the regulator or power safe reciever wont turn off, which is always better in flight than it shutting down.

If there's a small current through the switch, if you leave them plugged up in storage they will eventually drain the battery.

I believe NiCD and NiMh will self discharge even if the plugs are disconnected. So, lets say, you charge the RX pack in the plane but don't fly for about a week. You place a meter on the pack and you'll see 10 to 20 % loss of fully charged power. I believe this is why the Mfgr of planes. etc. say charge the night before you intend to fly. Others bypass this issue by hooking a "trickle charger" to their plane. These keep the packs charged all the time. I find thickle charger fine for long storage like over the winter.

You are correct, one on the big advantages of A123 cells is they dont self discharge
