I recently bought the German-made 3W 1/4 scale fiberglass P-51 Mustang kit (112" wingspan). I have built roughly (15) scale WW2 planes in my life using traditional balsa sheet covered in fiberglass with very good results. My question with this 3W composite Mustang concerns the stability of the fuselage. It seems to flex a lot along the centerline and when pushed at a particular spot, it seems to "deflect" a liitle too much for my taste. The wings and tail feathers seem very robust. This kit came with no instructions and I have no experience with all composite kits. My question is: Do I need to go inside the fuselage and create extra support via plywood formers and fiberglass? Is this something that is common with all composite kits? I have yet to assemble the fuselage to the very stout wings, so maybe once they are joined,it ties strength and rigidity into the overall structure? Any help/suggestions are appreciated!

You have to ask; what would the flex do to the air frame in flight? If the stab is wiggling around the yes it could be a problem. If not then its ok.
I have a Composit Sis-t FW190. There is a bit of flex if you press on the right places. Doesn't affect the plane though. Same for my Yellow P-47. If you push some compression is noted but so what?
When you built your framed up planes with balsa and used maybe monokote or fabric for the covering.. didn't they flex when pushed?
So.. you should be fine.

Thanks Bob...that gives me some confidence. I have handled a Yellow Spitfire and a Byron Mustang years ago and I did not remember them being as flexible as my 3W Mustang....thought I would ask.

Frank,
I have one of these beauties NIB and a few years back I spoke with Ron Eisner[R&D Aero, www.raddaero.com] about this plane. At the time he had built two of them for customers and highly recomended that some internal bracing be done on the aft end of the fuselage. I have spoken since with others who have flow it and they say the same that without the bracing, there is too much flexing, especially when flown with the larger engines..like a 150 inline. I was thinking rather than formers, I might try some carbon fiber cloth but I haven't decided yet.

Hope this helps,
paul

Thanks Paul...I worked with a gentleman who created an exact scale set of plans for a 1/4 scale Mustang...these were copied directly from North American microfilm. He gave me the plans before he passed away and I am thinking of using his plans to create a series of formers for the rear section of the fuselage.

Thanks for the info about Ron Eisner (although that link seems to be broken)....I am glad to hear someone else felt it was a little flimsy....especially since I want to use one of the upcoming Kolm 3 cylinder engines in this project. Thx
Frank

Frank,
We're looking forward to seeing some pictures/video of your Kolm engine installation in your P-51.
Should make for a sweet combination.

Will do Paul....I have contacted Vogelsang about the IL-200 3 Cylinder but it does not seen to be available yet. Price may be a sticking point as well...I heard that originally it was going to go for around $4000 but now I am hearing rumors of $6000? Will give details as they become available.

Richard,
Great looking engine installation.
Have you had any trouble with keeping the rear cylinder cool ?

Thanks
