It's hardly rocket science is it-making up fuel only requires primary school maths, the ability to read , and use a measure (calibrated jug, measuring cylinder, calibrated syringe) accurately. Oh_ forgot the most important ingredient.....................common sense!

I've been making my own fuel up since I was about 12 or 12 years old.........

In Australia (and possibly NZ?) we have a whimsically named spray can engine starter fluid. It is called "Start Ya B*...d" .

It only contains about 25% or may be 30% ether.

It is fairly inexpensive. I am tempted to buy a can, decant the contents, and mix it with 30% castor oil (by volume) to see if it makes a viable diesel fuel. No additonal kerosene.

MSDS:

naphtha petroleum, light aliphatic solvent 64742-89-8. 30-60%
dimethyl ether 115-10-6 30-60%
diethyl ether 60-29-7 10-30%
hydroquinone 123-31-9 <10%
ingredients not contributing to the classification balance

possibly it may work very well in a sport diesel engine.

Fiery-the brand is certainly on sale here-whether the contents are the same is another matter-NZ being considerably colder (in winter) than Australia perhaps what is for sale here is blended with a higher ether content (or perhaps not-the market is fairly small after all)

Your approach is pretty much what I tried during the 'Bougainville diesel flying attempt' that I've related here previously-except that the starting mix was 'tropical engine start' and only had 25% ether, so even with 1/3 oil added, we were under 20% final ether. We got a few pops out of the engine, but could not sustain firing. I also worked on the basis that the other hydrocarbons would substitute for the kerosene.

Something like a well run in , larger diesel might respond Ok-I've got a DC350 that will run on just about anything, old fuel, new fuel, stale low ether fuel.......

PS Even as a chemist, I can't think of any useful role that the hydroquinone component would contribute to in an engine start formulation-it is used in some roles as a free radical scavenger or potentiator.

hydroquinone is 1,4, benzine diol is used in skin bleach creams have no idea why it would be in starting fluids it appears due to cancer risks banned in Europe for this use martin

one company said it would lighten skin areas on your private parts not going any further on that one , may be off the marketl
As a pharmacist at one time some Drs would prescribe a treatment cream we would compound for dark skin spots it contained hydroquinone it is a powder but will dissolve in
water and most likely organic solvents

I was looking at the ingredient lists on the back of some of the starter fluid cans here in my area, and it is almost comical. One can stated something like ether 5% to 50%, same for the other items in the list too. Now how does one go about  figuring out what they have in the can when it could vary so much?
It is hard to decide what to use for percentages like that.
Fortunately if you can get it in your area the John Deere branded starter fluid seems to be mostly ether so far.

lots of these brews on the shelves are for conventional spark ignition engines you have a spark to light it off useless for diesel with their low or no little ether content John Deere rules here
