I have done some painting for a friend lately, and he gave me an old Nosen P-51. It has had more owners than I care to know ! .. It also has never been close to finished or flown. It appears it was once destined to be the yellow Rockwell P51. it has suffered a bunch of hangar rash, without any real serious problems..

I must say they fuselage on this plane is AMAZINGLY light, the wing feels about right.. But there must have been some good contest wood used in that fuse...

Whats out there available? Are the canopy and cowl still around? Unfortunately this one was built with the gear fixed, and rather poorly executed.. but I have a bad habit of picking up abandoned strays in need of way to much work

Just thought I would throw this post out there as the name NOSEN P51 has been pretty low key lately. Thanks for any help or ideas .. I will probably start making a wish list and slowly accumalting parts for the future.

I will NEVER forget the first Nosen P51 I saw in person. At that time I flew a four star 40 with a lethargic FP 40 motor in it.. we had a big club but a 90 sized plane was large in those days. We held a Giant bird flyin , (which by todays standards was not even big airplanes) Anyhow back to the story, this guy pulls up in a van and unloads the biggest d*mn p51 I have ever seen, I was in shock. Yeah it was a Nosen.. The two things that really stuck out were the GI Joe in the cockpit looked like he could have gotten lost under that gigantic canopy, and the plane had a converted gas engine, WITH A PULL START ON IT ! I have never before or since seen someone with one hand on the plane, and the other pulling that chord like a lawnmower... it was a big deal back then.

For some reason I don't recall it flying ? I am not sure he ever got it going? Maybe something broke...

I remember my first Nosen P-51 sighting as well foodstick. In my case it was at one of the full size airshows that I used to participate in with our AMA show team. Anyway, out of this fill size Chevy van comes this massive P-51 in "Big Beautiful Doll" markings. Monokote covering, fixed gear, and a G-38 for power. The thing broke ground at about 15 mph, flew around at about 15 mph, and then landed at about 15 mph! It would have been an absolutely perfect scale performance had it been a model of a J-3 instead of a Mustang!

hahaha, that sentence is funny after I read it again. I think I was still remembering the ODD moment of his hand on the plane, and popping it over and over with the rope starter..

When you got a Nosen kit, it was a giant box full of balsa. As the saying goes, you carved away everything that didn't look like an airplane...

They are great fliers, a couple friends of mine each had one that had about 20 years on them. They lost them last summer doing their routine, pretty spectacular crash from what I've heard. They are currently building six more between them and their other flying buddies.

If you need a copy of the plans or the manual, shoot me a PM.

First ones I saw were 2 guys flying them together with old Sachs engines.... impressive back in the early days....

A picture of one of my old ones....

We redid the plans.. am almost complete with my "latest" one. Updated plans have a 3 pc wing, and show retract installation. We also modified the fuse profile to make it a bit more scale like...

Here's a link to my build - have not done much lately! A lot of work, but a great flying plane.
