Many years ago, maybe not so long ago. There was a model of a Dauntless on display at the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola Naval Air Station. I think it was built and flown by a fellow name of Dave Platt. We had a guy bring a Dauntless out and it was to us very rare. The only other one was at the Museum that I know of. Was this plane every kitted for R/C?

The only kits I know of from that time period are the jemco Dauntless. Now there are some kits out today if your looking to build. There is the Skyshark Dauntless, but you have to find a kit and there is the IMP Dauntless at 1/5th scale I believe. A friend has one, nice kit if youwant to put th etime and effort into it. The skyshark is a smaller kit as is the jemco if I remember. Let us know what you find.

Dave Platt's was a one and only. I remember it in the magazines of the day. I have been to Pensacola a half a dozen times; I wish it was there during one of my visits. The local CAF brought in one one year; It looked great doing low passes.

Dave Platt's Dauntless set a new standard for scale models and is generally considered to be the model that started the trend of weathering which is common practice today. There have been numerous kits offered for the SBD including those already mentioned by Skyshark and Innovative Model Products as well as Complete-A-Pac in the UK and, probably the best offered to date, the Master Scale kit designed by Jim Meister. I'm sure there have been others as well as numerous plans such as those by Nick Ziroli and Jerry Bates.
