I'm looking for any feedback concerning the installation of a OS 52 Surpass/4-stroke on a Kyosho P40 warhawk.

I'd like to fit the OS52S with Pitts type or slimline muffler but can't find the appropriate model on either Tower's or OS's website.

I may be overlooking something.

And secondly, any feedback regarding the inverted installation of the engine in this model.

Thanks,
Zipperneck

I am not 100 per cent sure, however I do not think that a pitts style muffler is made for the 4 cycles. As for an inverted engine, I have never had anything but problems with them. I usually end up inverting the plane to get the engine started and then having to flip the plane back over once the engine is running. Not really a safe thing to be doing at all. It is also a lot easier to screw up the rods as you can fill up the cylinder with fuel and get hydro locks on the piston. Hope this helps and Good Luck, Dave

I believe the smallest engine which Slimline makes the 4-stroke pitts style muffler for is the 91. I have the Slimline pitts muffler on my Saito 150 and it works great but I had to make cut outs in the cowl to allow it fit for the muffler has somewhat of a long body.

For the P-40, I would just mount the motor inverted and route the standard muffler out the side. I've seen some planes set-up like this and it doesn't look bad. Besides your motor will stay cooler by having the muffler outside the cowl.

Also the 4-stroke will run fine inverted. Just make sure your low end needle valve is adjusted for a good idle. Most 4-stroke motors come from the factory with the low end needle set on the rich side for break-in. Without adjusting this needle after break in for a more lean idle setting, the motor will have difficulty running while inverted. If your motor is broken in, I would mount it in your plane inverted and leave the cowl off. Start the motor and see how it idles and transitions to full power. If it acts too rich, just keep leaning the low end needle in 1/8 turn increments until you get a good idle and good transition to full power.

I hope this helps.

Slimline makes Pitts mufflers for a variety of 4-stroke engines. I have one for my OS 120, one for my YS 91, and one for my YS 120. Here is a picture of the one for the OS 120:

As for inverted engine problem, note the engine in the picture above is mounted inverted. In fact, all four of my 4-stroke engines are mounted inverted in my warbirds, and I have no problems with the engines whatsoever. The engines will idle at low RPM all day long. As noted earlier, all it takes is low end tuning to get an inverted engine to run right. If you experience problems with your inverted engine, then you need to take the time to tune the low end.

I do indeed stand corrected. I have never seen them before. As for the inverted engine thoughts, I have fiddled and fiddled with the low end adjustment and never been able to get a really reliable running engine that will start and go. I have taken these same engines and moved them to a side mount and they are fine. What engine is that in your pic? I am using nothing but OS. Thanks for the info on the mufflers as I can now reevaluate using my OS 91. Thanks once again, Dave

The engine in the pic is an OS 120 Surpass III four stroke. I also have an OS 91 four stroke mounted inverted, and it idles and runs just fine. On an OS four stroke, it does take some time to find the sweet spot in the low end adjustment. The OS 120 above took about 45 minutes of fiddling around the low end when the engine was new to get it to idle for an extended period of time. The OS 91 took me around half an hour. It seems that the low speed needle valve on an OS four stroke is very touchy. Turn it 1/8 of a turn and you could be too lean or too rich. On the other hand, it usually takes me a couple of minutes at most to get an inverted YS four stroke to purr like a kitten.
