Status: offline 		I picked up a YS170 on a deal that is new.  From the YS experts out there...  would it be worth adding the CDI conversion unit?  Prop size stay the same or will I pick up a little extra?

I also noticed some are running as little as 10% oil ... I have always stuck with the YS recommendations using the YS 20 20 fuel. Thinking about trying the 30% heli fuel in stock at the LHS.  Any 170 info is appreciated.

Status: offline 		It's a double edge sword. It has its advantages & disadvantages. There are two ways of converting a regular 170 to a 170 cdi:-

A) By just swapping the head, back plate & add the cdi unit

B) If you want it to be just like the factory issued, in addition to the above, change the crank, cam followers, piston & throttle body - it has an extra adjustment

Pros:-

1) Longer flying time
2) A bit less vibration
3) Better mid range/ transition/ torque


Cons:-

1) Weight - about 100g
2) Runs hotter
3) When it goes wrong, you have to find out whether it's the engine parts, spark plug, plug cap or the cdi unit
4) Takes a bit more time to recognize whether the engine/ pump is too lean or rich

Prop wise, I have been using a 20x10.5 PN on Coolpower heli 30% nitro/ 20% oil. RPM wise, about 7,100.

stock DZ170 + CDI conversion doesn't = low oil.

They changed internals like Riot3d mentioned to safely allow running less oil. The manual for my stock DZ170cdi states 5-25% oil, if your manual doesn't state that then I wouldn't cut the oil back just because you've fitted a cdi. Double and triple check this.

Status: offline 		It is well worth doing the conversion. The cdi will give more mid range power, a lower idle (around 1600 rpm) and use about half the fuel.

The APC 19 X 11 works well on the 170 cdi.

Definitely do not run low oil as the factory cdi's are the only engines designed to run low oil.

Status: offline 		CDI all the way, I changed my engines to CDI and never went back to glow, very reliable, and extremely easy to adjust.

Status: offline 		This is great info.  I was not aware there were crank changes, etc. on the factory 170 CDI.  The 175, yes, I did notice different parts. I have other YS engines and love all of them.  This is the first 170 and as with all of them, they have their traits. Learning those traits = a joy to run.  I'll try the 30% Heli and it sounds like the conversion Central Hobbies has is worth it.

Status: offline 		The thing with the 170 is that there are four versions, and you can only know by taking them apart and knowing what to look for.
You can't go wrong with Cool Power 30% and the CDI.

Status: offline 		From what I have read on the DZ170 in older posts is the diapham in the pump has been through some changes that the 175 has improved upon.  The thought crossed my mind to add a glow driver set to engage below 40% throttle and see what happens while waiting on the CDI.     ANY YS engine is nothing short of a work of art.

Status: offline 		There is the version with the different pump, one which is the low oil version, the hyper piston one and the Cdi M.

Don 't bother on a onboard glow driver, it is not needd at all.
