I will be posting pictures and information of my Vailly P47 build. I have wanted to build this for a long time and I have been slowly putting it together over the years. What I plan to do is post pictures and comments of the project, but they may not be in order of when I built the components.

I remember reading on RCU a long time ago that the way to address a scale project was to break it down to a number of individual 'kits' and build each component as a separate project. Last week I made the rails for the sliding canopy (see pictures below). The canopy is controlled by a servo rather than an air valve. The reason being that with a servo I can control the speed of movement. Using air would have be easier to engineer ...

The color scheme I will be doing is the original Big A$$ Bird II from WWII. The picture below is of the restored P47. There are several differences that I will point out as I go through the build. The most evident differences in the picture are the dorsal fin and the red around the canopy frame. the WWII version didn't have the dorsal fin fitted until later and the canopy frame was natural metal. Also the WWII version had a Curtis Electric prop which looked slightly different that the Hamilton Standard on the restored version.

Here is a pic of the original BABII flown my Maj. Howard Park of the 406th FG, 513 FS. Maj. Park is credited with making the first kill of a German Panther tank using the 5" HVAR rockets

I do like that color scheme. I didn't find a photo of the origional BAB until after I had finished my project.  I did a pretty extensive build of my YA model here on RCU several years ago.

Here are a few pics I dug up.
1. This is the dummy radial before I detailed it. it is cut to fit the Brisson 5.8 that I am installing. I purchased the radial from Frank Tiano many years ago. I believe he still sells these and I remember seeing something on Nick Ziroli's site (I could be wrong).

2. The next few are of the fuse showing the engine cowl flaps. I was going to make them functional, but have changed my mind and will have them fixed in a semi-open position.

3. I am using the Robarts tailwheel. It will be covered by a 'leather' hood as was the full size T-Bolt's. The wheel I came across when I was getting the wheels for my Venom jet. It looks right , so I am using it.

Dash,
Your P47 looks great. I have built 3 Yellow P47's over the years and I really like the way they fly. You might notice that the stripes on the tail of yours are in a different order than mine. The restored was first painted as you have it then he changed the order to match the original version later. I have documentation that shows both.

Here is a picture of the last Yellow P47 I did. in the 'Angie' color scheme from the same Fighter Group as BABII

Here is a little teaser about the fowler flaps. The P47 had a very unique action to the way the flaps were deployed. Unlike the P38 which moved back and deflected at the same time, the P47's swung down and back into the airstream then deflected. I tried different methods to try and mimic them , but the only thing that worked was to build the hinges exactly as the full size had them. On the Yellow P47 pictured above I just used Robarts hinge points with the pivot point below the wing (per the plans).

I haven't been able to do much this week with the Jug. I did receive the landing gear yesterday from Sierra. WOW!!! They are a work of art. I can't believe the quality and how robust they are. I did go for the version with the shrink bar and I am very happy with these. Here are a couple of pics. I can't wait to see these installed and shrinking as they swing up into the wing ...

I am working on getting the flaps installed. Here are a few shots of the left wing and flap setup. Everything is mocked up to make sure there is no binding. It works as smooth as silk! There will be stand off blocks to permanently attach the hinges to the ribs. The idea is that the metal rod will just rotate the flaps and not bear any weight. There will be a servo for each flap in the center of the wing. It will rotate the rod which will cause the hinges to swing the flap down and back. As the rod continues to rotate the flap will deflect. As I said in an earlier posting, this is the way the full-size worked and it seems to work on mine.

The final flap leading edge and the wing trailing edge shapes will be determined once everything is set in place. I am debating whether or not to add counter-balance weight in the leading edge of the flap. Any experienced advice would be appreciated.

I have attached a picture of a P39 that is for sale here on RCU. I had covered a Yellow P47 wing with Flitemetal and like the result. The P39 looks so nice that I have made up my mind to go the Flitemetal route.
