Are Hitec's high torque digital servos reliable? Anyone had any problems with them?

Have about 8 or 10 of that model in one giant scale gasser and one jet - so far no problems. I like them.

I have been using hitec digitals for a while, i have around 25 or so throughout several jets, and helis. However I will caution anyone against the HS5245MG high torque mini servos !!!! out of the 6 I have, 4 failed !!!! twice it was on a flap, and I almost crashed !! I replaced the servo thinking it was just a bad apple, and a brand new one did the same !!!!!

besides the 5245, I love the Hitecs, and thats all i use ..

Well thats great I had planned to use the 5245 on all the flight controls of my new high performance electric ducted fan. I am glad I got the information now before I tried them. I wonder if they would be okay in an electric with smaller flight surfaces and no vibrations? I may test one out because they are the perfect servo for my jet. Can anyone recommend another brand of small digital servo that I could use in my electric Jet. I need 10 servos total but only 6 will be on flight controls the rest will be regular HS 85's.
Thanks for letting us know Wojtek

Thank you all. I will be ordering some tomorrow, you guys have been around the jet world for some time. If there good enough for your high dollar jets, than for mine also.

I put all of my Hitec servos into a special round file several years ago.

Good luck.

YEp lost a Patriot and another sport plane. The pot shafts would snap on them. Design was fine just poor materials.

Do a search in the Radio forum. Make up your own mind.

FWIW, many people have had very good luck with these servos.

If you figure on an average turbine you need 5 flight critical servos. and the difference between a Hitec digital and a JR is maybe 40 bucks a servo, that is 200 dollars total.

On a 5000 dollar jet that is 4 percent difference. THe wheels on most of my planes are worth more than the difference.

For turbines this decision to me is a no brainer, but to each his own.

Before I get flamed, this experience was with non digital. Unfortunately this experience did not encourage me to experiment with even more expensive servos.

Like I said, spend an hour and do a detailed search in the Radio forum.

Hey Wojtek,

So, what was the mode of failure on the 5245MG? I have a pair of them on my Stingray's rudders; 5 trouble-free flights on them so far. Did yours just stop functioning without warning or was there a sign of trouble before hand?

Thx,
Kelly

Every brand has failure s - people seem to jump onto Hitec when a failure occurs due to many reasons, one being I think since they are less expensive and thought of as an "off " brand compared to JR (even futaba and Airtronics get the shaft it seems in the world of jets).

All I can say is I have used 50 or 60 hitec servos in the past 5 or 6 years since I started to buy them, including some digitals (see my post above). I have been keeping and eye on them, for any slop, twitchyness, bad cenering, etc and as of yet have not experienced any. One plane I fly them in (including a number of 5945's) is a 28 pound giant scale gasser, this was its third season and they are going strong yet. So, why should I panic and ditch thousands of dollars in servos when I have not had a problem? I have been told I should throw them away and spend another 2 or 3 grand on 8411 's.... but I have also heard of failure s in them! Personally I have had top end servos from JR (4000 super servos), Airtronics (contest heli servos) and others fail in my 20 years in the hobby. I still use all brands, accepting that NO one company is 100% failure proof. So untill I have a rash of failure s with my Hitec digitals, I will continue to use them and buy more. Just the way I see it...

Just used Hitec servos for the first time a few weeks ago in my Facet. First problem was one aileron servo was DOA. Then, lost the Facet on it's maiden when a second aileron servo went into full deflection failure . In my 20 years of flying RC, I have never had a servo failure .....Till I tried Hitec! NEVER AGAIN.....

The 5945 I have used have been great. I have however had 2 5645 smoke but they smoke upon hook up. I replaced them with the 5945s Then had no more problems...
