Hi,

Can anybody point me to a general chart or knows where I can compare power and trust in general when comparing 2 stoke engines vs 4 stroke engines? Not sure this is available but would help me undertand similar power motors in the 2 stroke and 4 stroke sizes.

Thanks

Zork:

The accepted ratio is 1.0 to 0.6 displacement. In other words, a 60 2c is the equivalent of a 100 four stroke.

There are many exceptions. For example, the YS engines are much higher in power than this would suggest.

And one airplane that might fly happily with a 4c 80 might need a 2c the same size to fly.

So, as I said, it's a rule of thumb, don't count on it too heavily.

Bill.

That is pretty much correct. For a powerful .46, a .72 fourstroke is just a slight bit more powerful. For a 60 sized engine, a .91 fourstroke is about equal. These rules do change, and like william said YS engines are more powerful than others, a YS .63 has the same power as a .72 of another brand.

SnownSkate,

The now defunct YS.53 FZ was stated, on the recommended 30% nitro heli fuel, in a UK review, to be capable of spinning a 12x6 APC at over 13,000 RPM.

I don't think you can show me too many two-stroke .60s that are equally capable.

The replacement YS.63 FZ is pretty powerful, but may be lack-luster in comparison.

Though a .60 2 stroke may be equal in power to a .91 four stroke there is a big differance. If you want to go fast the higher revs on small high pitched props give the two stroke the advantage. The higher thrust of a larger low pitched prop gives the advantage for aerobatics that doesn't involve high speeds such as the older fast pattern planes, also good for slower and or heavier planes such as many scale models.

But if you put in a .91 two stroke in place of a .91 four stroke then you can do both better.
