I am building the 90'' agcat from Floyds plans. I am trying to figure out what engine to use. I wanted to put a Saito 325 radial but my funds just doesnt allow that I was wondering what 4 stroke I could use? A saito 170 radial or 200 single cylinder? What would you guys recomend I am going to put a hopper and spreader on it to simulate dust.

I am sure some other guys will jump in on this, but the Saito 220 is only 36cc displacement and this plane will probably come in at 25lbs or more. One of the guys is using a 3w 75 I think and I would think it would take at least that to give it good power.Just my two cents.

I'll jump in. You might consider getting this bad boy....a lightweight 50 cc. This will haul the AgCat around with ease. I don't know of any 4 stroke that will haul a 25 lb. plane. On the other hand, if you try to build light and your plane ends up at about 20 lb. AUW you may be okay with that Saito.
BTW, check out the price of the XYZ 50, read A-F-F-O-R-D-A-B-L-E !

The other 50cc to look at is the DL 50.It's a knock off of the DA 50 and there are some really good reports on how well it runs.

I appreciate the help on engine choices I finally decided to save up and get the saito 325 radial it just sounds so good. I am a cropduster and fly an agcat myself so I just got to get the radial for it. Also what are you all using for flying wires?

Ok here''s the gear. I tried to follow Floyd''s plan but my over-engineering got the best of me. The LG is made by TNT from 5/16" 6061, wheels are 8.5" from a mountain skate board. They come with 10mm bearings and I''ve inserted bushing I made at home from stock bought from Aricraft Spruce. The fuselage where the LG attaches is not quite 1/4inch ply with a 1/8 door skin doubler. I used a 2 inch wide by 3/4 inch fir backer for the LG. There are a couple of 3/4 inch plywood clamps on the end to help spread dynamic loads to the doublers. Its all glued and screwed together. It''s attached with six 10-24 cap screws with nylock nuts. The tailwheel needs more work. I manufactured it from 1 1/2in x 1/4 in 6061 bar stock. I didn''t get it bent as nicely as TNT. The caster frame is cut from 3/32 in 3003 and also needs some correction. Thats a 4" Dubro wheel but it wan''t ment for a tail wheel. I''m probably going to need to drill it out an put in a brass tube insert.

I''m actually working in the living room of an old cottage my wife and I own. Gives me a 13 X 15 foot work area. (I also have the rest of the house but the rooms are pretty small. You get use to the pink interior after awhile.) I don''t have the 4 X 8 foot work bench situated where I can assemble it. ( I have a row of book cases taking up the wall opposite the window in front. I clamped it together a few weeks ago to get the feel for how it is going to go together. Looked pretty good to me. It took up most of my side of our two car garage. My wife''s Pathfinder sat on the other side in the photo. It will certainly look nice parked on the runway the first time after I get it done. It''s going to be a while though.

are you familiar with the Saito FG36?. a big four stroke gasser. will haul that bad boy around with ease and sound good, as well as giving you a nice slow idle and fly on tiny amounts of fuel.
