That is stunning!!! 20KG is easily done, as said, the undercarriage wasn't metal, internally was a mixture of carbon, Kevlar and GF and as it was designed from scratch it was clear that the strength was there where it needed it

Thanks, I saw the 'old' version at Jetpower and could not get over the quality so I hope to see this one later. I am thinking there should be a new class for pro companies as an individual would be hard pushed to come up with this amount of work and development on a solo basis. Having said that a look at the Fouga of Philip Avonds can produce fantastic results for a one man band. Good luck to both of them and all the other competitors at the WJM.

Yep, hoping this will be at JetPower to drool over!

I am sure there will be another debate post JWM but until then, as you say, good luck to all competitors......

It is beautiful for sure. What a great job on this model. Yes I am sure it is the best money can build but it still is wonderful to look at. You are correct that no one person could do it single handed but what a great job on this plane. Good luck to him and all the competitors. Are not we lucky that he decided to do it. It is glorious to behold

Not only has he built a fantastic model, he's taken the detail to the next level, is practicing his flight schedule and is using social media to increase his odds of a repeat win. I would be proud to compete with this man regardless of where I placed.

It's incredible, no question, it raises the bar yet again, I just wonder how anybody that isn't a multi millionaire is supposed to compete with that.

Without those resources you can't on the static judging side. One can compete on an equal basis though on the flying side which represents half the score. Of course with the amount of money spent on projects these days, it won't be long before there will be completely computer aided flight maneuvers. Flip a switch for a perfect Cuban 8 and presto! All it will require is for the pilot to line up the jet at the correct heading just before hitting the switch.

I'm curious what motivates them to build the yak? It can't be sold as a kit, its a gigantic money suck. To win a trophy? Are they just severely wealthy dudes who are focusing on their hobby? Super cool, but kind of pointless. Way more than six figures for a model?

same thing that motivates us to spend "huge amounts of money" for "toy planes".
Money is relative...

not trying to start anything but they used zip ties on the fuel lines. I thought that was not recommended?

Sometimes you have to sacrifice a few things to keep inside budget - guess it came down to the cable ties.......

composite retracts would be the next step to our hobby i think ....a 3D printing plug, molds and amazing detailed light legs

Hah! All it needs is an inertial system and they can probably program it to take off, fly the routine, then land :-) probably the only thing they will need to do then is fuel it....

It was odd, but most of the other countries in Dayton two years ago all used no safety wire at all. Most had nothing and some had plastic ties. It seemed to be a common occurrence.
