After number years in RC hobby, I finally decided to build two of my favorite warbirds, those being FW190 and the Spitfire. As such, I could use some advise in choosing the best kit available for each of those planes. I’m looking for kits, which are very accurate, are good fliers and are complete as far as having all the components available to complete them. I would like to build these in either 1/5th or 1/6th scale. Last time I looked few years ago, Dave Platt, Innovative Models and Yellow Aircraft had full kits available and all the additional components required to complete them. Are these kits still available and are they still the best options available for building these kits? Although I’m leaning towards Spitfire Mk IX and FW 190A, if there is a fantastic kit available for either a long nose version of the FW or some other version of the Spitfire, I would definitely consider them. Thank you in advance for all, and any, suggestions in helping me choose the best kits.
Cheers,
Val

Dr, The Mick Reeves 1/6 scale MKIX Spit is as scale as they get. He has a nice fiberglass fuse and retracts etc for it. It is a short kit but getting the sheeting and sticks is no big deal. Also I think I would just get a kit cutter over here to cut it out as I didn't like the plywood that Mick uses as it warps horribly. The Taylor Spit is another really nice one and also very scale. The Top Flite and Pica kits are only kinda sorta scale but are good flyers. Don

Val, you have very good taste in warbirds!

FW190A or D9, go with a Bob Holman 1/5th scale www.bhplans.com
Sptifre-IX, go Brian Taylor 1/5.3 scale

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far. I found Mick Reeves web site and I must admit that his Spitfire semi kits look great and it looks like he’s got all the other goodies (retracts, prop, etc.) for that kit at a reasonable price. Brian Taylor’s kit also looks nice, but I did not notice any mention of retracts being available for his kit on the Holman web site and I was wandering whether they are available? Additionally, Reeves Spitfire has the fiberglass fuselage as oppose to build up one used in the Taylor Spitfire. Glass fuselage would go a long way in speeding up construction but are there any benefits (I’m thinking tail weight) to a built-up fuselage with these planes? Additionally, as far engines are concerned, are there suitable engines for both 1/6th or 1/5th scale Spitfires and FW190s that can be mounted without having to cut open the cowls, or is one scale better than the other in that respect, since that might be one consideration which might decide on which kit to go with? Thanks again for all your help!

Thanks Vic,
Seeing all the quality goodies for the Taylor Spitfire, all I can say is that I am definitely sold on going that way for my Spitfire. Now for the FW190 decision!!!

Take a close look at the Holman D-9. Robart will work with you on the retracts.

I second the Brian Taylor Spitty and the D9. very nice scale planes. I know the Spitty and the D9 both fly well.
The Reeves kit was also be great as well.

Thanks for the Holman D9 suggestion. I tried to find information about it on the Holman website, but I couldn’t find anything related to it. I’ll be ordering the Bob Holman Plans Catalog, so I guess I’ll have to wait till that comes in before getting all the information. In the meantime, if anyone knows the scale of the Holman D9, I would appreciate if they could pass it along. Ideally I would like to get the FW in same (or very close to) scale as the Spitfire.
Thanks again to all for all the info.

Just to muddy the waters a bit, I would also suggest looking at the Vailly Aviation FW190. It is 1/5th scale and the A- series, but all of the scale goodies (including a cooling fan) are available. Roy's designs are excellent, and the landing gear suppllied by Sierra Precision are absolutely gorgeous.

I am building the Vailly FW190 right now. It falls together nicely. Anyway, I have seen the Sierra retracts up close at the Dayton show, and they are just as Tempest says: THEY ARE GORGEOUS! (All of his retracts are, but that's another thread)

From a building standpoint, the Vailly FW 190 is excellent. I love his blue prints. Everything is explained in detail. They are actually easier to read than Ziroli plans. No clutter on his plans. This is my first Vailly plane.
Out of the countless planes I've built, Vailly is top-notch. I will be building his 113" FW 190 when it comes out next year.

Take a look at Joe Huntleys site. He is building three of them.

Hope this helps.

The Meister 190 is actually quite a bit bigger than 1/5 and does not really correlate to the Taylor Spitfire for scale. The Holman 190A or 190D kits are much closer, about 1/5.2 (80 inches) compared to 1/5.3 for the Taylor Spit. Close enough to be called the same scale! Jose Gutierrez has finished one Holman 190A and is working on another. Check 'em out here: http://mywebpage.netscape.com/warbirdscale

If you order the Holman catalog you won't have to wait long. I ordered mine on a Saturdaty and had it by the next Tuesday. You won't be able to put it down when you get it. A bit disorganized, but full a great stuff.

Thanks to all for all the input guys! I stumbled upon this forum and I’m so glad I did because I just can’t believe all the info there is to be had on this forum! Likewise, I can’t believe how nice and helpful everyone is on this forum. Anyway, I checked out the Vailly Aviation FW and it sure seems nice. I can see that choosing the FW is going to be a tough decision. I’m curious about one thing though, having just returned to the hobby after taking few years off, one thing I noticed, as I was browsing through other threads, is that no one seems to mention either Dave Platt or Innovative Model kits. As I look back at my old RC Scale magazines it seems that Platt, Innovative Models, and Yellow Aircraft (aka Bert Baker) kits were the Katz meow of RC kits at that point. As such, I’m wandering why does it seem that besides Yellow Aircraft, which still seems to be quite popular, have the other two manufacturers faded from the limelight?
