Hey Guys;

I am currently building the RTC Version and had originally planned on MonoKoting for covering, however, I have changed my plans and will be glassing and painting; I have for sale, brand new, never been opened or used: 1 Large 25 Foot Roll of Aluminum MonoKote and 1 Small 6 Foot Roll of Flat Black MonoKote; the perfect amount for this plane; the Flat Black was going to be on the top part of the cowl leading to the canopy; if your interested send me a 'PM'; I'd like to offer them to someone building this plane before I list it on the Marketplace or Ebay.

Can anyone give me a detailed description of how to secure the wheels to the Robart 622-5 gear? i have Dubro wheels (there is no bushing). The bolt is an allen bolt that screws into the lower strut. Will I need any bushings? Photos of your set up would be great. Thanks.

I have used these before and this is what I did. I first used them without anything and it didn't take long to start getting worn and having lots of play on the axle. I purchased brass tubing that would just slide over the axle bolt basically it had a 1/4" inside diameter. I then picked up another piece of brass tubing that would slide over the first piece. I cut both sizes to the width of my wheels. I then installed a nylon washer on the bolt/axle then put a drop of Blue Locktite on the axle and slide the first tubing on.
The Locktite will lock it to the axle and keep it from spinning. I then drilled the wheels out to the outside diameter of the larger tubing checked the fit and then inserted the tubng partway, put a drop of thick CA on the tubing and then finished sliding it all the in the wheel. The CA will of course lock the tube to the wheel. I then took the axle assembly and smeared a lite grease on it, I would say even Vasoline would work fine. and installed it in the wheel put a nylon washer on then bolted it together. I needed to keep this narrow and didn't want the added spacer of the locknut on the axle bolt so I put Red Locktite on the axle bolt threads and screwed it in to the right adjustment and after it setup it won't move. I have done several planes without the axle locknut and used Red locktite before due to just not enough room and never had one come loose. After you are done you will find that this is a very good setup with no play in it. The tubing is a precision fit and wears well so long as you keep it lubed. Also just a note but you can take the brass tubing back off the bolt by heating it first to soften the Locktite, just a lighter will work doesn't take much.

Whats the deal with this covering on the arf???? The silver....as I am heating out blems gets "cloudy" dark areas in it. Is there something I can do this better with, I am using a gun and iron, or is this covering just horrible! Thanks 871

Well, you've joined the group now because you are having to grapple with the horrible covering on this ARF. Mine was so bad that I had to make vertical cuts at the ends of each really big "sag" and then slit the sag in the middle and over lap the edges to get the covering tight. Once I got the sag slit horizontally, I applied Balsa-rite to the wood so the covering would stick. On some of them I gave up and just cut the sag off the model and then put on a patch of new covering. My local hobby shop owner said the problem was caused by a change in the formula for silver MonoKote. I used a different brand of covering for the patches and surprisingly it doesn't look too bad. Next winter I plan on stripping it all off and glassing and painting mine. Good luck with yours and welcome to the Brotherhood of the lumpy and saggy P-51.

I'm doing the ARC now.. but a few years back I did the ARF and my covering was a mess
it took hours to get the deep wrinkles out of it
some never came out .. it's a shame because most of the model is well done

Just my opinion.

The plastic covering on the Arf has only one purpose. To protect the wood underneath before you rip it off. So just buy the ARC. Besides that, the P-51 is an awesome flying plane, you will love it. Only a few more months in the frozen tundra and then we can fly again.

Yea for sure this covering is horrible!

Is there any need to "Wedge" the landing gear mounts to kick the wheels forward????????? or is it pretty resiliant to falling on its nose on the runway?

still preparing for my maiden.........

Thanks!

My Mustang had no tendency to nose over at all. I balanced it just as the plans called for, and that seemed good. Awesome flying plane, you will love it.

Does anyone know where I can get some stencils for this plane? I am glassing a arc and would like to paint on the emblems and markers rather than getting some decals made. Im hoping to have this plane done in time for spring.

Hi Easton

Here in Minneapolis I use a company called Letter Tech. They can make any paint mask I want and the larger letters and numbers, like the ones on the sides and on the tail they made out of flat black vinyl. They stick very well and are very thin, about the same as paint. The small letters are from a company called Promark. Those are a rub on letter and come very small, like 1/8in high. They have a sheet already made called warbird nomenclature 1:5 for 20-25 dollars. Works very good. Once they cure on the surface, they don't peel off. A lot of Top Gun planes have Promark letters and graphics on them.

Good luck
Chris

Hi all!

Yes, I agree about Promark! They even made me an entire set set of custom Swedish nomenclature and paint-masks for Swedish "Three Crowns" roundels as I'm building a Royal Swedish Air Force P-51 Mustang. 1st class stuff!! Can really recommend them!

Hey Guys,
What are you doing with the retractable tail wheel and rudder? I mean how are you setting them up with the radio. From what I understand there is one rudder seervo and one tailwheel stearing servo. Do you Y them together then once the tail wheel is retracted the cabel slacks so the wheel unit will not turn when you turn the rudderr in flight? Are there other ways? I will be using an 8 channel radio.
Thanks
Mike

You can use one servo and hook both the tail wheel and rudder to it as in the picture, you can see the steering wires attached to both arms and a single push rod on one arm for the rudder.

So far so good. I now have the wings painted and the flaps installed. Cowl is painted as well. Hope to have it ready in about a month or so. Later, Kevin.

Hey guys I ran into something new- A friend gave me a complete aeroworks "I think" dual drop tank kit. Has anyone got some pictures of them installes, and is it possible to fly with these? I'm sure it will slow it down a little.
