I use a Fox 2.4 in mine with a Bennett side mount muffler. I tried a wraparound pitts, but they take up even more space and run into firewall interference problems. You can see what I had to do to fit this setup in and this is a very compact and light engine. The plane flies great with this engine and it has plenty of power for large round loops and limited vertical climbs.

I have a ZDZ 40 for mine with a side muffler. It will fit on the firewall even though it has a rear carb. Looks like a nice combo. Don

Hey Wiwanczyk, I would like to know how that 80 fits. I talked to ZDZ today, I think it's one of the best fits and the weight is only 4.45 with 8 hp, so I will be able to swing a four blade. But I want to confirm the fit and what mount you are using.

Thanks,

The four bladed prop you showed earlier is fantastic! It's the closest I've seen to the real thing for a P-51. Presently I am building a
1/5 scale P-51 and I would like to buy one of these props. Also could you tell us the engine behind "the prop" and why does it have to be gear reduced?

After several more flights a few additional comments. The plane/engine continues to break-in well. Nothing has come loose in the last four flights, so all the fittings must have seated in. I have yet to make a flaps up landing, but have no reason to try because she lands beautifully with full flaps. I have discovered that I have about a 6 click trim change between slow gear-down level flight and normal gear-up high speed level flight. I flew her inverted for a short distance just before landing on her last flight today and she seemed to handle it beautifully. It was only a short distance but I did not notice an extreme elevator correction being required. I flew her first loops and they were actually pretty tight with no tendency to snap out. She also did some split-S's, barrel rolls, and aileron rolls with no problem. The four flights today were at our field that has a paved runway. Takeoffs were fine with an easily controlled pull to the left on takeoff.

We did have a landing problem that I have not figured out yet. On landing rollout she was jerking pretty hard to the right just at transition from flying to tail on the ground. Pulling hard enough to tip up on one wing tip. Did not scrap any thing and had no tendency to nose over. Just suddenly pull hard right and tip. Then when the speed dropped even more she was fine. Did this on three landings. She didn't do this on the grass field and when landing in the dirt (sorry, missed my lineup on one landing). I have not been able to figure it out yet. Not sure if I'm landing to fast; or maybe just over correcting on landing roll-out. Will have to examine this more next time out.

One other thing. this DA50 is turning out to be a dream. I have 8 flights on her now and I have flown her for a quite a while and have yet to get below half a tank. Fuel consumption is not a problem for the DA50.

Hey, has anyone tried hovering a Mustang?

Could your pullimg to one direction be a toe-in problem?

We are currently taking care of an air leak in the down side of one of the mains. The ZDZ 40 rear intake, rear exhaust fit inside the cowl very well. No carb sticking out the side. Engine turns a 20/8 prop at 8200 RPM. This was on the first tank of fuel. I can not imagine what that 80 will do. I have concerns of whether the firewall or airframe will take the power with out failure. Also I don't think the 80 will have enough back clearance for a muffler. Let us know. I just recieved two more sets of Aerotech wheels. These wheels have to be seen to believed, right Splas? For roughly 48.00 a piece they are truly a bargain. Now waiting on my last order of Sierra retracts. Should have them in a couple of weeks. Hope the weather gets better so we can fly number1.. Well back to the building room. Number two will end up looking like the G2 mustang. With envasion strips and blue checkers on the nose, with a blue tail, and blue spinner. (OLD BOY)

The 4 Bladed prop is custom made for me currently overseas. I am in the process of sourcing them in north america, as i do not like the lead time/price point of the prop currently. i expect them to be available for a lower cost in the not too distant future. I'll email people more info on purchasing one of these currently imported prop if you would like. just send me an email back channel

as for the reduction drive. the prop is 26" diameter and a 24" pitch. the blades are 2-1/8 wide at the tip. they have a whole bunch of "bite" to overcome on spinning them, so i would seriously doubt that they could/would work on a 50cc motor without some sort of mechanical advantage.

now, for the guy who wants to put a ZDZ 80 in his plane, i think you could spin this prop with an 80.

i am spinning it with both a DA 50 and a ZDZ 50 at 4200 to 4400 RPM. we are making some changes to the drive design to make it a little more robust, and to make it easier to install with both motors. i expect the drive to be in a few testers hands mid december (with any luck)

and i agree that the ZDZ 80 motor in this plane i think will be just a little overkill!!! not to say i wouldn't like to see it fly, but i'd be behind some cover when it did. while the 80 is a great motor, there is a whole bunch more vibration than a 50 single.

i have 2 DA50-R motors and i think that they are just outstanding motors....best of the current crop of 50's.

cheers

joe

Gary, yes I looked at A LOT of wheels. The Aerotech wheels are half the price of all the other wheels out there. I have compared the wheels to actual photos of the P-51 and they are as scale as you can get. As far as I am concerned; everybody elses scale wheels are a rip off.

its pretty funny about the wheels.

when Robart came out with their new brakes for wheels, i looked into purchasing them for my 5", to be used on my TF P-51 Kit mustang. i was told by robart that new brakes could not be used on the "scale P-51 10 spoke" wheels. i could use the brakes on the 'regular" 10 spoke wheels, just not the p-51 wheels. i was then told that the only reason that robart made the scale wheels was for the Aerotech p-51. i wish i had known that before i spent more money on the robart wheels!!!

live and learn.

hey, has anyone purchased and tried the Aerotech "scale" sliding canopy.....not inexpensive at 120 bucks, but then, its the whole canopy and frame done.

i'll be interested in hearing comments!!

cheers

The plus side is, if you don't need the speed/power for "normal" flight. You will have enough power to swing a big 4-blade prop with some authority. I am planning on trying an 18-6 or 18-8 Zinger 4-blade with my Moki 2.10. You should be able to swing larger props. I may lose some performance, but if it flys OK, I'll go for the looks.

actually im going with a 20x20 to 22x20 2 bladed prop my etimates tell me over 150 mph with this one !!! woo hoo ! cant wait !! I already tore off all the monokote to prepare for a glass finish ... i have to say this ARF is very well built and the wood is top quality ... i was actually even impressed with the monokote application, especially in corners and crevices ... there was wrinkling, but all ironable away .. anyway, the monokote is in the trash now ... i will be painting it like the picture i posted earlier in this thread ...

I can't wait to get this one flight ready !!! (unfortunately i have over 5 other projects running simultaneously ... )
