This evening the sky cleared up and I went out and flew it again two more times.  Nothing changed - it wasn't a fluke on the first flight, its a really nice flying model.  A pal had a digital fishing scale with him and we weighed it.  It weighs between 20.9 and 21.2 pounds with about a 1/2 tank of a 16 ounce tank of fuel in it.
Have a Good One!
Rocky

That's very good # for the plane.....I've assembled three  of these TFGS  ARCs,  all were over 22#..    Mine were glassed and painted, but all were great flyers... ( one is in that great Valhalla in the sky due to a Xmitter battery)   Take time to get the incidences, control settings, and CG correct,  and you'll look like Chuck Yeager on the first flight..   Obviously you did it all correctly, and I commend you on a good  build..

Hey guys, I have been following this  thread since before I got my P51. I finally got it, and I am just now getting ready to do the ailerons and flaps and I have a question. In the manual it states at least 50 oz servos for the ailerons, rudder, & elevator. I have a complete set of Spektrum DS 821 servos and they are rated @ 88oz at 6v. Are these really good enough in real life or just on paper??? Has anyone used these on their build?? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I've used 80oz  servos on this plane with no problems and good results...

I would say they  have enough power for the primary flight controls, but I think you should use 1110-130 in.oz. servos for the flaps if you are using 45-50 degrees of flap movement.  This will keep your current load down  and keep from having the flaps blown back up in flight. Make sure you use pinned hinges on the rudder and elevator, not the supplied CA hinges.

ace1726,

I am using the 821s on the ailerons and flaps on both of my TF GS mustangs.  I have about 40 flights with them between the two planes (one at 24.5 lbs and one at 22.5 lbs) without any issues.  I am using 2 cell A123 batteries durect to the receiver (Spectrum 9100) and servos.  Hope this helps.

Mark

Thanks Mark, actually it does help.... Good to hear from first hand experience that they work. Now if I could just decide on what motor will power this thing with minimal hacking. I have had great success with the RCGF line of engines and I was considering their 62cc engine for my Mustang. I have also considered the MTEngines 57cc. Still not decided, but plenty of time and things to do before I get to that point.

I have a DA-50 in one and a DL-50 in the other.  The DA-50 has the functional Keleo exhaust and the DL-50 plane has the new JTEC DA/DL 50 in cowl muffler that is made to fit in the cowl of the TF P-51.  Both motors pull the planes along with plenty of speed and both mufflers work great with no unsightly cowl hacking.

Hey Mark, I saw a pic of your DL powered P51... What are the chances of you having a flight video of that bird??? Also, do you have any pics of the install?? Thanks again to everybody as all this information is really coming in handy.

Ace.....Would like to help, but my friend has his mounted in a TFGS P-47, with a roomy cowl.....It does have a rear carb and compact dimensions for a 62cc, I believe Slimline markets a very compact Pitts muffler that could work here..

Aces1726,

I have pictures of the DL install on Page 77 (post 1706 and 1707) of this forum.  Unfortunately I do not have any video of the DL powered mustang.  I can tell you that it is a perfect match for this plane with the JTEC muffler and a Mejlic  21x12 prop.  It halls!

Hi everybody
I just picked up a NIB P51 &  DA-50 with Keleo exhaust & Sierra retracts,,,, can't wait to get it flying! Somewhere I found a step-by-step post on how to beef up the shear webbing in the landing gear area, and of course I can't find it now.  Can anybody provide a link, or just a short description of the modification that needs to be made? I fly from grass & would rather do a controlled surgery now versus a more substantial repair later.
Also, any thougts on Hitec 645's all over vs 5625's or 5645's? I need to order a bunch of servos for this one ASAP.
thanks!

I have done a wing mod that you can find on page 69. It is similiar to that on page 51. I have some drawings of rib templates and other areas. If you are interested. Will be glad to send them out free if you want to do my mod. You have all the best stuff there.

Hello all you fellow warbird pilots i have been debating on what size of engine to use on my Topflite P-51 that i purchased after loosing my scratch built Pica 1/5 P51 to a radio hit but now I will be using the 2.4fast in the new plane. After all the reading I have decided to go with the DL50 instead of the G-62 that was in the Pica. For the DL50 set up what is the correct size standoffs to use please.

Have you looked at the MT-57 engine.

The weight is perfect and the power is amazing.

Have a look at my  videos.

HI
Does anyone have the same problem as mine  of running this bird off bumpy grass runway ?
Our field is pretty bumpy with a couple of depression running across the middle of the runway.
The last three times I took the plane there I had problem with the take off runs, so much as that every time I have to take the plane home and fix the landing gear. Sometimes just a bend, today after hitting a divot on take off, the left retract suffered some damage that resulted in a landing with the right retract ripping off the wing.
Seems that every time I go out and fly, I need to come home and fix something.
Is it me the way I take off , or you guys flying off bumpy fields have the same problem?

Also If I decide to change the retracts from Robart to Sierra, do the mounting holes matches or I need to fill the original one and red rill for the new retracts? Are Sierra more durable than Robart or they bend just as easy ?

I am getting discouraged about flying this model off our field. I love it in the air, but what a pain with the take off run.
Any idea anyone ? (please don't say "go fly somewhere else, because I can't ...that's the club I belong to )
And yes I bought softer wheels ,softened the retracts springs and reinforced the wings spar as per instruction on this thread...

I think that the Sierras are more durable , but they too will bend on the top strut. I have bent a couple from bringing the plane in to slow and stalling to high, my fault not Sierra. My wing mod held up with only bending the upper strut. Part of the problem is the long lever arm of the gear. The Sierra's are better shocked than Robarts. Have you tried using a little flap on takeoff to try and shorten your run a little or even reduce the  load on the gear with a little up also. Could you have your runway rolled, or maybe use a different side, etc. Just some ideas.

Personally I would get with the club and have a work day and get some dirt and fill some of the divits and possibly fill in the rut. Figure in the cost of repairs and time lost to doing repairs which would be cheeper fixing the plane every time I flew or fixing the runway. Just my though cause I wouldn't fly there if I had to repair my plane everytime I flew and it was the cause of the runway and not dumb thumbs.
