Steve, Hold some up elevator at the begining of the takeoff run. Then gradually relax it and let the tail lift. You need to have some pressure on the tailwheel at the begining of the roll for directional control. Also make sure it rolls straight in the three point. This is how you fly the real one. Don

loucel,

My CG came out right on the forward edge of the recommended CG range. She flew great. I do have my fuel tank moved back about 2" and my front servo tray is moved back on former. Everything else is as recommmended in the instructions. Read the review I did in the User Product Reviews forum. It has a lot of pics.

Keep me posted on the operation of the DA-50R.
I have had a lot of problems getting mine started and keeping it running.
Starts, then quits several times before it finally runs. Seems to need at least a 2 minute warm-up.
Tried lots of tuning with not much success. Changed the plug etc. etc..

It has quit in the air twice forcing dead sticks ( about 24 flights).
With it's hard starting and poor reliability, it's boxed and ready for shipment back to DA.

My suspicion is the ignition module.
My first one didn't work right out of the box.
They replaced it, but a check after the last dead stick (3-4 minutes into the flight) seemed to indicated the sparking is erratic in nature. I'll let DA determine the real issue here.

Good news, when it runs it runs strong !

My first one balanced right on the CG. Model weighs 20 pounds. This includes a ZDZ40 engine, Serria retracts and Aerotech wheels. I am using a 1800 ma. 4.8V pack for ignition and a 1800 ma. 6V pack for the radio. Have a small leak in the down side of the retract sys, will find and repair. Looking forward to firing that ZDZ40 up and taking her for her first flight

Just curious...has there been a consensus reached as to what is the "best" engine for this plane? Meaning...the engine that requires the least amount of cowl cutting and has enough power.
Thanks!
Bart

Some might think its crazy, but here is what i am doing with my tf mustang arf ... I am removing the Monokote, and glasing the whole plane. While I am at it, i will also beef up the wing a bit by glasing the bibs (sheeting will have to be removed for this .. ) I will use all carbon rods, with high torque setvos .... For an engine I am using a ZDZ 80. (the engine has similar if not smaler dimensions than the us engines 41.

now here is my question, what prop should i useon the engine ? i would rather not go over 20" diameter on either a 3 or 2 blade prop, and am going for all out speed here ... the engine calls for either a 24 x 12 3 blade or a 26 x 12 2 blade prop (engine rpm is up to 8200) .... I would like to use something like a 20x 15 3 blade or a 20x17 2 blade prop .... i figure this should get me up to at least a 140mph top speed ..... again question is ... what prop, and where can i get one ? i know the racing guys use high pitch props, but these are usually really really huge and meant for 200cc engines and the like ....

heres the paint scheme im using

best regards,

Wojtek

My limited research would indicate a smaller prop with more pitch is the better way to go for speed.
The 2-blade 20X17 would be my first choice. See what others think.

Wow, a lot of work .... but it should be great when your done.

I think you will like the ZDZ!

The paint scheme should get a lot of attention.

Good Luck !

Hi Guys,
This plane is awesome, mine came in at 19lbs., balanced it a bit nose heavy, The DA 50 started with no problems, and after a few minutes of run time, took the plane for a few runs on the runway!, on the last run, I took it up for a five minute flight, a few clicks down and one click right aileron, and this plane was trimmed,

One mishap!!, when we were checking the radio program on the ground, I accidentaly hit the reverse switch for the landing gear servo, flipped it back the right way, and did not tested the sequence on the ground.

I'm flying , gear rotates up ok, now is time to land, no gear action, not ok!!! set the plane for approach, flaps down , kill the motor, and the plane slowed down , floated for about twenty feet, and hit the grass, , no damage to the scoop!!! or the rest of the plane!! wow, for sure I thought the scoop was gone.

when the reverse switch was activated , the servo pushed the valve mounting braket and broke it!, problem solved, and ready to fly again

Well I finally got to fly my "Doll" again today after being gone or bad weather for the two weeks after it's first flight. This morning we were flying off our secret WWII hidden field (soccer field). she flew great off the ruff grass. Gets airborne in about 50 feet with the DA50. This bird is soooo beautiful and sleek in flight. It's just awesome watching it fly around. I am still having problems getting the tailwheel doors to close even during flying. Going to have to try stronger rubberbands. This plane is very easy to takeoff and land. I have almost completely eliminate any pulling to the side on takeoff by setting the wheel alignment very carefully, full straight ahead with no toe-in. She takes off and lands straight as can be with just a little rudder. She lands beautifully. I still can't believe I have no trim change with full flaps. For landing I just come around make a pass down the runway, lower the gear and check her out, turn downwind, at the 180 lower flaps and come to 1/4 power. She has a very nice sink rate and settles right down. A little flare at landing and she touches down soft as you please.

I am still have orientation problems with this all grey bird. I am still making large lazy turns as I break in the engine. The plane is so sleek, it is easy to loose orientation against a grey sky, that we seem to have all the time now. Just don't know how to solve the problem with anything other than invasion strips. Although I know I can solve the problem by keeping her in closer. But she wants to fly FAST and do big lazy rolls off into the sunset.

Just to have something different I am thinking about changing het to the below pic of "Big Dick" and adding the stripes. Going to take her out again at 32:1 for the last time later today.

Steve, I'm glad to see your finally getting to enjoy your investment! LOL.. the plane does land easy. A few years ago at Warbirds Over Delaware I managed to Null the aileron trims on my 9ZAP tx.. ?? So I had to fly the plane level using the stick.. I flew a complete flight that way and made a perfect landing.. Its the plane I'm sure.. Regards BobH.l

Hey, man, this is real BS. I thought of that first so find something else! Actually just kidding. I have pics of several planes from the 78th FG with the checkered nose. So maybe I got to go with one of the others. But I would be interested in what you find out.

BobH, yes I have been surprised just how well mannered she is. Does not seem to have any bad habits and the sink rate for landing is perfect. Not to fast, no appreciable floating - just right.

I tried experimenting with invasion stripes today. It is going to be a much bigger problem/pain in the butt than I expected.

hey guys,

anybody get the time to measure the dimentions of the cowl for us guys who are building the kit??? sure would be nice to know if i could use the arf cowl in place of all that wood on the kit with the plastic lower cowl.

anyhow, if someone could measure length, and height and width at the firewall and the nose that would be great..

i like the no trim changes at flap extension.

cheers

joe

Joe,
The cowl is 8.5" long, it overlaps the firewall by approx. an inch, the dimensions at the firewall are the same as the kit!

hope this helps!

[I added the below comments to my review in the User Product Review forum]

The Sierra gear are turning out to be a very good gear. As they should be for what they cost. At least half again as much as the Robarts. I have not seen the Robart gear; but I have the Robart tailwheel and Sierra is much more scale. I actually think that all the retracts in this size range are probably very good products. The Sierras do just drop right in, as the Robarts do.

I looked at a lot of engines. The 50cc size seem to be a just right compremise between power, size and weight. Just depends on what you want in size, horsepower and carb location. The DA50 fit the bill perfectly, is a beautiful engine, very powerful for it's size and the plane has balanced perfectly with no special shuffling of stuff or adding weight.

One note I forgot to mention for first time P-51 flyers. The P-51 flies very pattern-like. I.e., on rails and it only goes were you make it go. It also means that if you just throw in 30 degrees of bank and expect it to turn like a trainer or aerobat you will be in for a surprise as it flies off into the sunset. The P-51 has to be flown. You need to use coordinated rudder, elevator and aileron to make good tight turns. I do not mean to imply it is difficult to fly. It is not; she is very well mannered.

I also solved the tailwheel door closing problem. I put two more rubberbands on the doors. They now close.

I have thought extensively of how to improve visibility and yet keep her at least true to a P-51 Warbird. Invasion stripes would fill the bill. But generally they are on the bottom or both sides of the wing. Because of the retractable gear and servo tray doors, putting the stripes on the bottom of the wing will be A LOT of work and probably still not come out looking all that good. Putting the stripes on the top of the wing is what I am considering at this; but I still may just bite the bullet and put them on the bottom no matter how much work it is.

The plane looks really good with the Sierra gear and no gear doors. You sure can't tell they are missing while flying. But I like the plane so much I am probably going to add them soon. Sierra says they have some brackets that look much better than the glue-on wood blocks the TF plans call for.

Just got my ZDZ 80RV for the Mustang !! man ! what a nice engine !! its small too for an 80 !! only 1/4 inch more will stick out the bottom than would from a 3W 50 ! carb is behind the back plate and will be nicely concealed inside the fuselage, and looks like the brison wrap around pits style mufler will also get concealed for the most part ... time to start beefing up the firewall .... im think ink of even using tobe internal triangle bracing ... and i figure some aeropoxy should hold it pretty good. I wish i could just slap it together and go fly, but i have quite a bit of glasing, filing and painting to do on this one ...

I'm also going to order a set of the strut collars from Sierra Precision. The stock method of mounting the gear doors is not good--on my first flight both doors were the first thing to fly off the plane when landing in grass. Sierra makes some various nice designs that allow the doors to either be mounted to the strut or hinged at the base and attached to the struts with pivot wires like the older kit Mustang's gear doors were.

ZDZ 80 ... Are you nuts !

I thought you were building a P-51 ... not a rocket.

That thing is going to be powerful.

The plus side is, if you don't need the speed/power for "normal" flight. You will have enough power to swing a big 4-blade prop with some authority. I am planning on trying an 18-6 or 18-8 Zinger 4-blade with my Moki 2.10. You should be able to swing larger props. I may lose some performance, but if it flys OK, I'll go for the looks.

I need help! I cant figure on a motor for this bird. I have a g62 but its to big for the cowl as some of you have found out. I'm going to glass this plane and do flight metal on her so she's going to be heavy. I also have Robarts gear and allot of other up grades ( sliding canopy, drop tanks, cockpit, functional exhaust, ext. ) I think she will be about 25 lbs or so. I don't wont to shop the cowl so, that's my dilemma.

easydog, you kind of have a delema there. The TF P-51 is borderline large enough for a gas engine. My DA50 is very sleek and small for it's size, but I have had to cut out the bottom and two holes on the side for the muffler. I don't think you can find any engine currently out that will fit in the cowl with no cutting. Any side mount carb will require holes. The only engine that I think may have a chance of fitting with minimal cutting is the new Revolution52. But who knows when they will ever be released and it's still not a sure thing. A rear mount carb and rear exit exhaust might do it if you find one.
