Pope,

I have just checked the trailer.

Originally this was built for go karts and is all metal chassis, metal floor and then 19 x 19 mm square tubing with sheet metal cladding.

the springs have 3 leaves and I understand you thinking on shaking everything apart.

I have pulled the trailer from canberra to Sydney empty when I bought it but after fitting out I have travelled every weekend around the Sydney clubs. Nothing moves and I have even found a couple of times when I have not put the straps on the wings they have not even moved.

This may be because I have built the model supports from timber 40 x 19 mm with high density foam (Clark Rubber) on top. I find that by using timber supports they continually flex and have no effect on the models. After using this system I had to put another timber support of 40 x 19mm on top of the foam and then use rubber Occy straps to hold the models, wings firmly on the timber.

Due to purchase of the trailer interstate (ACT) I needed to get it completely checked and had to have it officially weighed. This was done with it empty before model fit out. The total weight is 320Kg. I believe that this also helps the very smooth ride.

I only use one occy strap to hold the flight box and it never moves even with all the fuel and batteries.

If you want more information I can probably get more pictures over the weekend

Hope this helps

Carps.

Hey Carps, thanks for checking things out. Maybe Im being paranoid but when I made my box trailer I think when I bought the springs they were rated at some thing like 750 kg each. There were others there rated at by memory at about 500 kg each but I thought theres nothing like over kill, now when I drive with that trailer empty it just bounces over the bumps and the suspension doesnt even do any work, thats why I need to know which springs are best as the trailer i have rides as rough as guts, Now the spring ratings I have mentioned are just from memory and my memory is shot to pieces, . thanks again cheers the pope

Here are some photos of a trailer that I built recently. Used plywood for the box.

That is a nice trailer DG.
Just out of curiosity, in the first pic, what is sitting on the 4 wheel stand next to the trailer ????
I know it is an engine of some kind

looks like a go devil engine used for powering a boat in marshes.

That is a Go-Devil motor. It is a home made version though. I work for Kohler and got one of their 25 hp engines, and a local machine shop guy built the rest for me. It is used to drive a 16 ft aluminum boat through mud, weeds, buck brush etc. Mostly to get to the good duck hunting spots, but I am sitting out this season. I have flying to do!

John I am getting ready to have MTI build me a trailer and was curious as to what you thought of the craftsmanship? I am going with e channel recessed in the walls and 6x12 double door and side door. Also, getting the insulation in the roof as well. Let me know what you think of your MTI.

Crash and burn how high did you mount the shelf from the floor. I am having a 6x12 built and the e channel is going to be mounted flush in the wall and was curious to the dimension needed. Currently have 30% Yak 54
33% QQ Yak and need to know what height you used with the bigger birds.

Thanks,

I use this.............It's pretty much dedicated for plane trips. Flying at meets, float flys and fun flys around California. If you look back at post 605 we had a different trailer. We hope this one will accommodate us for some longer trips back East next year. I'm getting ready to start building racks for the planes, wings etc. so things will be much more organized.
I've got (4) 6 volt golf cart batteries under the floor wired for 12V. It will power just about any plane charger I throw at it and they also provide juice for my 1800w inverter that gives 110V for the trailer if I'm not hooked to shore power or if I don't have the 5.5KW generator running.
It works for Us..........

Thanks Roger, It's to big for the day trips, but makes the weekend ones a real joy. So much so I don't want to go home
I hope I can post what my racks look like in a few weeks. I got some great ideas from the 42 pages of killer trailers guy posted.

I bought a 6X10 Wells Cargo on Vacation because all the planes and Helis were in our 5th wheel and we had no room to live. It's got the extra 6" of height and suits me great. It's not completely set up yet and there are 2 more planes at home to go in but it ended up with more room than I expected. Not sure I would do the ramp door again but that's all they had with the extra height.

Thanks to all the other posts for ideas.

Very nice. Those small white baskets in the front, what do you keep in them that doesn't hop out?

The small white baskets were an idea that didn't work. I pull this trailer behind my 5th wheel holiday trailer and all of my small parts in these baskets ended up on the floor during the first 400 miles. They stay there when the trailer is behind my truck but I guess the back of the 5th wheel bounces a bunch. I had planned a work bench in the front when I get home but now I need to rethink my layout.

Here is my Horton 6x10 V nose trailer.
I wanted something that was unique and was very usable. All the side racks are on hinges that fold against the wall. If it is cold we have lots of room to sit inside. I did purchase the torsion axle (much smoother ride), and an extra 6" of height. The little "workshop" in the V nose is awesome when a problem happens at fly-ins. I have a marine battery running a power inverter so I can use my dremmel and drill.
I put some pink panther insulation in the ceiling and covered it with thin plywood. The stereo and speakers I bought cheap from a pawn shop, and the cabinets were cheap from target. The saddles were a bit tricky, I took a coat hangar, bent it to the shap of my fuse (once at the front, and again near the tail). I laid the hangar on some 1/2" plywood and traced the cut lines. Just make sure when you set the hinges that when you open them to put the planes in the rack that the bottom top touches the floor. You do not want all the weight of your planes pulling on the hinges. One hard bump and it would probably not hold. I put a door lock pin on each of the bottom and drilled a small hole in the floor to hold them open. I bought some stain from Home depot and stained the inside.
I get a lot of comments about the usability of "my cave", I like being able to walk around inside of it.
Good luck with your new trailer!

Anyone using one of those poly tongue boxes? I did some searching and see a bunch, but not sure how good they are. Prices vary from <$100 to the price of an aluminum one. ONt sure if the cheap ones are worth it.

Where did you get the black levers that hold the door up?
What do they cost?
I like your trailer the best so far because it fits my budget. It looks good too.
What did you paint (cover) it with?
Thanks, Ron
